Catchers interference to load the bases in the World Series in an all-timer. -
I love that even this hire is creating division. Again, it Venable looks like a good hire. So did Katz. And Barfield. Before the peacocking can begin, we'll need to see if the Sox provide him with the right personnel and tools to win. Even if he's a future Manager of the Year, he's a (admittedly large) band-aid on a gaping wound. Getz supposedly got "maximum value" for Cease and a year later that doesn't look great (depending on your opinion of Thorpe's ability to bounce back) and we've litigated Miguel Vargas as a cornerstone return to death. One good hire doesn't make or break narratives. It's one possible step forward after a dozen steps back. Getz claimed he'd build a good defensive team and it was the worst in baseball. He said the pitching wouldn't be repugnant and it was a rotating door of launching pads. So, honestly, I do want to know how the f*** he sold this job to Venable after telling Sox fans "I lied to you about 2024, buckle up buckaroos, we're gonna be bad in 2025."

Yeah, this move looks good in a vacuum because it defies expectations. But it's not like Getz made an actual roster move to inspire confidence, so we can hold our horses. Veneable may be the answer to the long running issue of the manager losing games, but Getz needs to assemble a non-horrific, shambling corpse of a roster.

Kudos where it's due: This registers as a good hire.
-
Nah, a sober guy does that. He's just a crazy person. The best part of a Nevin hire is that it'd be very easy to clean shop and fire him and Getz simultaneously.
-
Nevin is gonna really put this theory to the test.
-
That's rarefied air and the Bears aren't there.
-
I'll give Getz one thing: He's good at slashing the budget. He's a better a McKinsey man than Hahn or Haber.
-
Used an opener to do it!
-
Nevin tells me either TLR is running the show or Getz is an old-school moron.

I mean, James tries to give a holistic picture. Yes, I know they got two teens in the trade, but they also gave up three useful pieces - and after Zavala, I've got 0 confidence they can develop these teens that Getz acquires. Is that fair? Not really, but Getz is what turned me from an eternal optimist into a "f*** them, they don't give a s%*# about fans." Getting 29-year-old Edman would have been ripped like getting 29-year-old Wilson. But it's been infuriating to watch a World Series team get a closer and NLCS MVP-starting shortstop in return for Miguel Vargas and two fliers. You've got people in this thread that for years have derided analytics suddenly blaming Hahn (who, according to actual reporters with seemingly no agenda, pushed for analytic) for poor analytics. What is it? Getz has done f***-and-all to inspire confidence. Bannister actually demonstrated some knowledge other than "throw a fastball kid" with the Giants, so yeah, he probably deserves some extra runway. Everyone else is meh. I think that James ( @Y2Jimmy0 correct me if I'm wrong) is merely encouraging some patience to see if Getz will do things differently since he's changing personnel. A lot of us have just ran out of patience.
-
It really does come down to: When you're bad at your job and your friends that you hire are also bad at their jobs, they're crony hires. If Getz were experienced in anyway other than baseball man/ass-kissing and he and his hires didn't create the worst team in MLB history, it'd get papered over. But right now the chief qualification on their resume seems to be "friend with Getz."
-
Tank Commander Miguel Vargas is insulted. He was brought in to ensure a top pick next year since we couldn't get one this year.
-
Tommy Edman may be 29 and doesn't have years of control left, but he's the exact type of player Getz has been chirping about acquiring. Instead he got a guy who can't hit or defend.
-
Chris Getz: "I'm going to assemble a good looking defense that will be appealing t pitchers." Worst defense in the league.
-
Right? They overhauled the front office and gave us 121 losses.
-
I think that if Coby and Zach are in the same lineup, Ball needs to be with them. Despite the time off, he still looks like he has better chemistry with Zach. And that won't gel well with Giddey in a contract year.
-
ALCS is where Neal Cotts was the only guy to throw a BP inning. How in the world are you forgetting Game 3 going 13 innings? You can't be worshipping Ozzie and forgetting what is possibly the best managed game of his career.
-
Jayson Nix has Sox connections, overlapped in KC with Getz and is currently on the Angels coaching staff.
-
Absolutely disgusting. I bet they don't even have BASEBALL MEN like master negotiator Chris Getz running their front offices.

A bunch of fucking nerds?
