  1. Pitchers are salivating at this 3-1 score though
  2. This is key. They bring in Maldonado - who Pedro clearly views as his juggernaut, .191 hitter and league-worst defensive stalwart - as the starter. After they brought in Max Stassi as the vet. At the same time, they have Korey Lee (who was bad last year, yes, and could use seasoning), Quero (hopefully the future), Hackenberg (who could be a good backup in the future, but definitely needs time in AAA) and Perez (yes, bad, but again, Maldonado). With Stassi around there was no need to give $4M to the second worst catcher in the league (Eric Haase barely edges him out).
  3. If I had to diagnose this thread, I'd say it's more about the fact that Getz is trying to half-ass build a "win-now" roster of older guys while trading youth. I'm ambivalent towards moving Thompson overall cause he got buried. But it might have been worth seeing him as a reliever. This isn't the Mena trade, which reeks of "call J.G. Wentworth, because I need a warm body in RF now!" The Sox are familiar with Horn, he's a lefty reliever which (as many have pointed out) is worth its weight in gold (or Nicky Lopez, Mike Soroka +++). He could become very valuable, or he could be s%*#! It's just that Getz' philosophy is "with Paul DeJong's glove, anything is possible for our pitchers. Empty the farm! Go!" Edit: He's obviously not emptying the farm, but that's clearly why people are panicking. Because this is what the prior regime - that Getz was a part of - did.
  4. Oh, I was just listening to the podcast walking my dog when I heard that line and had a moment of "this dude is truly awful at the spin." Just say that you expect the best from them, we're working with them, etc. A lot like his team, Grifol likes to make unforced errors.
  5. I know Spring Training is fluffy than marshmallows, but his interview with Vinnie Duber was hysterical. Time-stamped for your listening pleasure (misery)? On DeJong: "Has done it before. He didn't lose it. It's still there." - Hit .207 last year, was released by 2 teams. Hit under .200 in 2021 and 2022. On Lopez: "He hit .300 in the American League a few years ago." - So did former batting champion Tim Anderson! Lopez is a career .249 hitter, so 2021 is currently an outlier. On Maldonado: "I don't feel that he's a .180 hitter." - Technically correct since 2019. He's been a .191 hitter in five seasons since then. Grifol is going to be like TLR with Leury Garcia with us, but with 3 terrible hitters.
  6. I didn't realize Getz posted here and was so vitriolic
  7. I'm fine with this because Thompson hasn't figured it out and is buried on the depth chart (I wonder who was in charge of developing him ?), but man, the Tepera trade seems so worthless in retrospect. Also, Getz feels like he's in MLB: The Show mode.
  8. Everyone knows you trade the 20-year-old with a plus curve for the 26-year-old platoon OF.
  9. Gallantly ignores Chris Bassitt and Gio Gonzalez (for Nick Swisher)
  10. 1) Bears decide they like Maye more 2) Trade down to Commanders, take Maye 3) Use other picks from Commanders trade, hypothetical Fields trade and more to move from #9 to #3 4) Take Harrison 5) ??? 6) Profit Mostly likely it's 1) Take Williams 2) Take Odzune/Bowers 3) Trade Fields for some extra picks
  11. I get to actually claim bona fides, because I picked which Dash-Cyclones game I attended based on him pitching (I wanted to see him or Vera). His curve made the Cyclones hitters look silly. Unfortunately this past year (when he was in AA), I got Dalquist. My wife's input on Dalquist was "he should stop pitching so poorly."
  12. I didn't mention Carroll or Thomas because there are 3 OF spots. Robert and Benintendi aren't blocking anyone here. McCarthy - and the rest of the D-Backs 3rd outfielders - was bad enough last year that they felt they needed to go grab Joc. Let's be clear: I want Fletcher to succeed because he's here. I'm not like the guys who get their jollies off on watching Colas fail. I just think it was a bad trade and it was made because Getz is desperate to make a team that immediately fits his image at any cost for 2024 to justify his hiring, even if it comes at the expense of long term value.
  13. If he's been blocked by a 30-year-old Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jake McCarthy, and Pavin Smith, that doesn't instill confidence. That's like saying he'll be blocked by Eloy, Colas, and Gavin Sheets.
  14. To be fair to Fletcher, he doesn't hit arbitration until 2026. They've got him for 5-6 years.
  15. Adam Haseley had decent pop for the Phillies minor league system, was supposedly good in the field, was acquired to fill an OF hole, left-handed, a little bit older. Then he killed Mendick. Now, Eaton is probably his ceiling and Haseley his floor, but I'm also skeptical of anyone who has "sneaky power" coming from the PCL.
  16. I've liked him so far, but if anyone thinks he's not going to be cheesy, his "SOUTHSIDE STAND-UP" call after Quero's spring training walkoff had me cracking up. Once he gets comfortable, dude is going to slide into his basketball/slamball persona.
  17. He just made a trade that echoes KW and RH's worst moves.
  18. While Tatis' HoF chances took a massive hit with the PED suspension...well... Tatis was a just signed, flier prospect Semien couldn't field Bassist was a middle of the rotation arm Montas had the future reliever tag Escobar was a rookie hitting .207 Dane Dunning wasn't ready to produce like Lynn (who worked out, for one season) And that's not counting guys who could have been long term depth like Hudson, Thompson, Devenski, Wendelkin, and Phegley Mena for Fletcher reeks of those trades, even if Fletcher is a rookie. He's five years older and supposed to be the plug and play right field guy. I think a lot of us trust Keith Law's assessment of players (even if it's taken a while to get there) and he's got Fletcher as a weak platoon bat and is profiling Mena as a rotation pitcher with a plus curve that could add mph to his fastball. TL;Dr - Fletcher makes me think of the days of Danny Richard and Matt Davidson.

The last time this matchup happened, Crochet made Ohtani look silly. Then we didn't see Crochet for years.
  20. Ah yes, I said something along those lines when Giolito said James Shields was helping him pitch better and Tatis wasn't yet going supernova. Eventually coaches need to coach better.
  21. I was told that veteran leadership would lead to outstanding defense Meanwhile I saw Colas make a great play in right yesterday and that's supposed to be Fletcher's calling card. Yes, I understand that I'm judging Fletcher incredibly harshly due to me being a Mena fan.
