  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 09:43 PM) Sometimes you can't "see the forest for the trees" when you become too familiar with a player on your own team. Dunn is what he is. But he still has value to another contending team, in a clearly defined role, either DHing against RHP, occasional 1B fill-in or PHer/power threat off the bench. We all watched Rios go through the motions in 2009 and 2011, and you would have sworn we would eat that entire contract. Three years later, we ended up just a bit disappointed in the return for him. How long have we been saying that? I don't think you can compare Rios to Dunn. Rios at least could play outfield, has some speed.
  2. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 26, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) I think regardless of who they call up I'm sure you and I as well as others will be happy to see some young blood in the lineup. I certainly won't complain if it were Semien. or depressed by what's on the farm
  3. My ass should be over there now. It's free to watch despite 100+ out there.
  4. The weaker hitters are always easier to pick when the rest of the lineup isn't doing anything. Today's game is just another example of the Royals owning the Sox. Taking a series just wasn't meant to be.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) If you did this with Sox fans, they'd be b****ing about how the fake players weren't any good Probably because they got tired of the ones they know aren't very good. I admire fans who know their team's farm system.
  6. As S. Rosenbloom would say, "can't run the bases, sounds like the perfect White Sox".
  7. QUOTE (lord chas @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 08:41 PM) If the Sox make some deadline moves I hope we can get another catcher in the system I wonder if there is a MLB team who is strong at catcher in their farm system. I think finding quality at this position is rare in modern day baseball. There's more Steve Yeagers than Thurman Munsons. If they are talented at the plate, most organizations would prefer to move them to a different position. It's not a desired or glamorous position among kids.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 06:55 AM) It is funny when the Sox acquire a prospect rated in the 70-95 range it is awesome, but when the Cubs get a top 15 guy, it is just dumb. Theo is a dope, but could you imagine what a genius Hahn would be if he had 3 of the top 15 and 6 of the top 41 in the Sox minor league system? Samardz has never finished a season as a starter with an ERA lower than 3.81. He is 29. He wants more than $100 million. I would hate it. Outside of pitching I don't trust the Sox farm system with developing players. This is a great deal for the Cubs. It's sad in a city that has two bad teams, this is treated like a world series. Prospects are prospects.
  9. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) "But this pitch count thing, we’re in the American League," Cooper said. "We’re not in Little League. But nevertheless, people that bring up pitch counts are people who have nothing else to really know. And it just blows me away. They’re doing that to say, ‘God forbid if someone goes down, I told you so.’ And these are people that are not in the arena and never really played, so what kind of validity does any of that hold? This is Coop's way of saying the bullpen sucks.
  10. This thread has gotten weird real fast.
  11. I haven't watched a Sox game the whole year but by looking at things on paper my guess is that the bullpen totally sucks.
  12. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) It happened again http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/...-of-a-baseball/ That's 3 times in this short season. Does anyone remember this ever happening before? Someone replyyyyy!!!!! I bet they are made in China.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ May 17, 2014 -> 05:58 PM) If Rick Porcello has actually turned into an above average starter, the Tigers might win 100 games this season. It's either a fluke or they have a really good pitching coach.
  14. Watching this on Game Day. There's a lot of pink on it. I feel like I entered a Hello Kitty video game.
  15. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 1, 2014 -> 10:41 PM) Was just watching Addison Reed closing for the Diamondbacks and it got me thinking about watching players the Sox traded away. Do you: a) Hope they do as badly as possible so the Sox win the trade b) Hope they do ok: because if you keep trading away guys who do terribly it'll make GMs wary of trading with the Sox (and also I guess it's not nice to see someone sad or whatever), but if he does too well you'll be annoyed at losing him c) Hope they do as well as possible, presuming you liked them as a White Sox d) do not give one solitary s*** Probably b) for me. I would not be surprised if Reed does well. Most of the better hitters are in the AL. It's the second year that will be revealing.
  16. In a perfect world cold weather teams would be doing away games in warm climates at the beginning of the season. 32 degrees is ridiculous. I'd expect a Bears/Packers game to break out.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) George Bell hit 47 in '87 and won the MVP. Also, Andre Dawson hit 49 and Dale Murphy 44. 1987 was kind of a crazy, outlier year offensively. George Foster hit 52 in 77. Then there's Don Kessinger hitting 4 in 69.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Rick Hahn would be making a mistake if he holds to this strategy. I can somewhat agree if the scouting and development isn't getting the job done.
  19. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Feb 13, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) In other words, "bad contracts" realistically can't be avoided. Not as long as you believe a players union really has power.
  20. QUOTE (Wanne @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) 1. Not sure why anyone would come all the way out here to partake in fast food anyway...but oh well. It's fast food...all fast food is meh. My fave fast foot out here tho is Freddy's Steaksburgers!...they're good how Steak N Shake used to be (sans chili). 2. The only thing I don't like about Tucson are how ASU and UofA fans go back and forth. Some SERIOUS bitterness between the two cities/schools. As for the city itself...it beats El Paso, TX...I will give it that. Some very beautiful parts of it and surrounding desert. 3. I think the whole Dodge thing is a little overdramatic...we're in Glendale...not East LA...and it's spring traing. It's fine...nothing to see there. Still can't believe how ridiculously nice it's been out here...up to 87º today and around 80 for another whole week. I need to find out the practice schedule...should have just got up and headed out there this morning. I did see there a weekend college series going on out at Camelback Ranch this weekend...NIU Huskies vs Minnesota. I find most of the non fast food places back in IL are superior. You could get lunch in Chinatown for $3. I'm still looking for that hole in the wall, that you wonder if it passes a health inspection, more than affordable Mexican carryout place in the south Peoria area. The best torta came out of Chicago Heights and then there was Tony's football size burritos in Joliet. There are no tenderloins or walleye dinners out here either. I wish there was a Chicago Bread & Dough Co. out here. Killer lunch pizza buffets there. Hard liquor is real cheap out here.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:43 AM) I am jealous of anyone going to Spring Training. I live 3 miles away and I find it to be one of the least comfortable stadiums. You need lots of sunscreen since there is hardly any shade and being out in the sun really drains you. The nicer stadiums are in Surprize. I would not recommend anyone staying in downtown Phoenix unless you want to got to other places. There are plenty of places off the 101 where there is less traffic hassles. The nice thing about Camelback is it is very hassle free driving. The stop lights in AZ are annoying.
  22. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) Spring training and baseball can't come fast enough. Agreed. This thread is lame. Post Super Bowl is down time for sports media. So this is what they had to come up with and people bite on it. I think people will get less interested in professional sports as more political doctrine enters the arena. This has happened to the NFL.
  23. That's a lot of cash for a guy who has not been in MLB.
  24. Despite all of those nice stats, watching a Thomas at bat is a clinic by itself. I remember watching pitchers trying to pitch around him without intentionally putting him on base and he we slap the ball up the middle or find a gap.
  25. Amazing what $4M buys a lot of mediocrity. It's not much different than government programs.
