QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 09:11 PM) I'll be honest, I don't see why ownership would spend a lot of money on payroll if fans won't even show up for a game like Monday. The Sox have spent a lot of money. Unfortunately it's been a lot of bad money. I wonder if attendance would have went up with the signing of Pujols.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 09:08 PM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance Oh, the the A's are behind us, despite their amazing run. Not a surprise in that stadium. FWIW, there's a huge slide from the White Sox to the Royals at 25th, roughly 3K per game. Go Sooners, at least one good thing can happen tonight for me. The real shocker is the Phillies.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) 24th for much of the season. Don't forget the Royals and Indians, they're always good to stay behind us. Mariners, too. Can't remember the other team. But we're behind the Padres and Blue Jays, that's pretty darned sad. I think fans are tired of the current ownership. Where else do you see the marketing slogan, "we'll make our product better only if you buy it"?

QUOTE (SouthSidePride05 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 08:58 PM) Well, even if the Sox were up 3 games going into Monday, it wouldn't make a difference, except for a potential clincher. The Sox are essentially trying to find ways to give away as many comp tickets as they can just to fill some seats next week. If we don't make the playoffs and we find ourselves out of contention in May of next year, I think we'll be contending with TB and Houston for last place in attendance. Isn't that happening this year?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) This board is a magnified reflection of the fanbase. Right now, it's ALL BAD. Which means a majority are expecting the Tigers to take the division with their easier schedule. Of course, as we saw in 2008, some unexpected teams can play spoiler down the stretch, like the Royals. But the Angels clearly have gotten their final breath of life sensing the A's are vulnerable and can be caught now. It would be one of the biggest shocks of the season if we beat Weaver tomorrow. Even Caesar wouldn't bet on the Sox in that one. We do miss Price. And there's a good chance the Rays won't have the same motivation, knowing they can't catch the O's, Yankees, Angels and A's. Besides all of that the Angels and Rays are better teams than the Sox.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 08:39 PM) Santiago has the much fresher arm. It's not fair to expect Quintana to do much more. He already got one of the most important wins in the 2nd half, against the Tigers. Unfortunately, we choked away the next 2 games (especially Game #2 with Peavy), but he stood up to them and showed we could go toe to toe and not back down. I didn't get where the "trade bait", "another year in the minors" bulls*** is coming from. Fans have probably more faith in Sale and Q for wins than the veterans. Both have not pitched a full season in their career. Peavy-fail Danks-injured-epic fail Floyd?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2012 -> 11:51 AM) As I said on a Cub fans facebook feed who posted this story... Yet the Cubs have blown for 140 games, and no one has arrested them... Reader comment: What else could he do? As a Cubs fan, he wouldn't know how to pantomime either "hitting" or "fielding".

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 20, 2012 -> 09:14 AM) The Angels are exploring a move to a town of 219 residents. http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/9/20/3361908/...w-stadium-sites Green Bay?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 07:55 AM) Better yet, Detroit is swept by the Twins, and Scherzer is lost for the season (but not a career-threatening injury). The Twins cause the Tigers to blow up their entire bullpen on Sunday with two extra innings losses by one run. Too bad the Twins couldn't play them in the baggie dome.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 09:39 AM) One of those teams is our direct competition for the division and if the other three collapse the WC may come out of the central. Both teams in the Central are playing bad baseball. Not gonna happen.

Despite our good season, we have MANY ?'s

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 08:47 AM) And its not like these same things haven't been brought up by the thread starter 1000 times already, although I do give him credit for trying to offset his total bummer thread starter by throwing in some Tiger dilemmas. Their fans want everyone gone except Fielder, Cabrera, Scherzer and V. That also goes for the manager and GM. Scherzer's a bargain for them right now. If this guy continues to progress, they are going to have to dish out some serious money. They already outbid every team a great deal signing Fielder. They are willing to spend money but they are not the Yankees when it comes to revenue. Their fan base has every right to be far more pissed than Sox fans. Two aces and 2 MVP candidates are not good enough to overcome dumb baseball. They remind me of the early century Sox teams. -
QUOTE (SI1020 @ Sep 22, 2012 -> 11:11 AM) Why are today's MLB pitchers so fragile? Nobody has even come close to giving me a satisfying answer. Everybody in the sporting world everywhere seems bigger, stronger, and faster than those in the past. Advances in training and nutrition are stunning compared to what we thought we knew when I as a kid. So why is 200 IP such a staggering load? How did pitchers in the past string together consecutive years of 300+ IP and come back for more? Inquiring minds want to know. All that being said SS2K5 does have a point about Jake. He may be hitting the wall. In addition to of course not in any way being a big game kind of guy. I think as a pitcher going from the NL to AL is far more challenging. I'd be a bit more cautious laying down big money on a NL pitcher these days. Some of the NL contracts are ridiculous. They really back load the salary and perform know where near what they are paid. Look at MB, Peavy's and Lincecum's contracts.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 10:52 PM) Nice post. I'm not saying he should give a pep talk, I just find it funny that obviously the team is dead and is in need of some words of wisdom from somebody. Or Youk should turn a table over. You have to admit the team is playing dead. Awful hitting. Awful baserunning in KC. Not like a real contender that is for sure. Youk shouldn't do anything. It's getting annoying that the players with the highest salaries are not carrying the team. When Peavy is on the mound it's like having Liriano out there. You have little confidence in getting a W. Despite Dunn's RBIs and HRs, his high K rate I think makes many AL pitcher not afraid of him. Plus there are some guys on the team with very little major league experience. That's starting to show. The organization needs to address the catcher and 3rd base for the future. A.J. and Youk can't last forever.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 21, 2012 -> 11:06 PM) These "contenders" have the following things that make them look "not like playoff teams": Angels- a 5-6 record over their past 11 games overall, including losing 3 in a row at home to Oakland in a potentially season killing series. Athletics - a 3-5 record over their past 8 games overall, including you guessed it - a 3 game losing streak themselves. Tigers - A 7-9 record over their past 16 games overall. They had two losing streaks of 3 games in there. Go figure. Rays - a 4-7 record over their past 11 games, including a 3 game losing streak. Let's get 'em tomorrow boys. 5-3 in our past 8. We hit a rough stretch of three bad games but I expect this team will snap out of it. Tomorrow. I believe. Because most likely only one of them will be a playoff team.
