Crain usually settles down after giving up the lead.

Might be a gift there.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 07:44 PM) I never realized that being mentally weak could cause your shoulder to detach. Really insignificant to that post. Did his shoulder detach this year?

Good news-Mauer didn't get a chance to hit it out.

QUOTE (Real @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 06:37 PM) weird that he stopped throwing his breaking ball Interesting last night I heard commentators calling whatever Sale was throwing- a swurve some say it was a slider.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 06:31 PM) That pretty much flies in Marty34's theory that we should dump Alexei Ramirez, since he's been one of the most "productive" SS in the AL, leading the league at his position in RBI's despite hitting for a lot less power. I know it's a long shot but just maybe we can trade him for Juan Pierre so he can platoon with Viciedo.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 06:24 PM) GAS. He gone. Why did it take RV and Cooper so long to figure out he was SUPPOSED to be a starter, not a short reliever or LOOGY? Granted, this Twins' line-up isn't exactly going to scare much of anyone in baseball, but they're pesky and have been hotter in the 2nd half of the season. Wow. 95 MPH. Wish Sale had that velocity yesterday to keep the hitters more honest. Of course. Start praising someone and they give up a bomb to Jamey Carroll. Battle of light hitting 2B tonight. They really need FLoyd back to mess with the 6 man rotation.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:48 PM) None of that has anything to do with your original point. You're killing me, dude. You said that Peavy is no Buehrle based on their career stats, when in fact, Peavy waxes Buehrle pretty badly in significant categories like K/9, K-to-BB, WHIP, etc. When you're striking out a ton of folks and issuing very few walks, it doesn't really matter where you pitch, correct? You can't support your original statement, because it's ludicrous. If you really tried, it would be laughable. You'd probably even have the nerve to mention W/L records. Appearances and innings. W/L are also important. Sometimes they tell more truth than people admit that you won't see in a stat book. A .500 pitcher with great stats on a bad team still turns out to be a .500 pitcher on a good team. Peavy's hyped hasn't rubbed off on the Sox. More like their mental midgetry has worn off on Peavy. Peavy=bad return on value. What more can I really say.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:52 PM) You're telling me that Peavy strikes you as the type of guy who gets rattled when the pressure is on, like a Greinke or Javy Vazquez? Not buying it. Everybody has bad games when the pressure is on. It's not like San Diego was a perennial playoff contender, so he didn't get much of an opportunity to do anything. And just consider for a minute that you're being exactly like those people who criticize Frank Thomas for not being able to hit in the playoffs. It seems that way. He's just another one of the Sox veterans that don't show up for a big game. Maybe I expect too much from a guy making $16M a year.

That's what you're banking on? other exhibits July 20 vs. Tigers Oct. 1, 2007 while Padres were just 1 game back Despite being a small sample size I wonder how much the organization even pays attention to stats like this. Remember the Mark Teahen deal? Only because he could beat the White Sox. They ignored that he was just really bad at baseball.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:11 PM) Sick burn, bro! So, the two playoff games from 2004/2005, plus the Friday game = Peavy is not a big game pitcher. So, the sample size went from 2 to 3. That's what you're banking on? No. From the beginning it's based on contract value vs. return. Guy's are not valuable on the DL. Innings and appearance are just as important. Mark B was good at that. I hate to use him as an example because it would confuse some in thinking we should have kept him. Plus Peavy's good years he didn't have to face a DH. Even with this season it's a bad contract and he's not worth even half of his option for next year. He seems to fall in line with the other veterans on this team and fail in important situations. I don't think he's beaten the Tigers this season. He's failed to live up to the hype. Sports are full of great performers until it's crunch time. (See Mike Vanderjagt). Some people become household names because of post season performance. (See Bucky Dent).

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) Yeah, I was convinced that Peavy is no Mark Buehrle because of the one game. I'm still waiting for you to say something that actually makes sense. Literacy can works wonders. I'll see if I can find a reading specialist for you.
-
QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) That's 2 career starts in the playoffs. You might have a little sample size issue with that. Plenty of good pitchers get pounded by the Tigers. Didn't Friday night convince you enough? The most winnable game of the series.
-
QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:54 PM) To be fair, Jake Peavy turns into a quivering pile of Javy Vazquez when it's a big game. (12.10 career postseason ERA. .849 OPS against vs. the Tigers) You didn't even have to cherry pick that one. Oooooooooooovaaaaaaaa rated.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:47 PM) To be fair, Jake has spent a large portion of his career on the DL. Fixed. #54 No contest.

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 04:27 PM) Even those small sample size (like his good numbers) are those of a rotation staple. This is all at age 23...have to like some of the upside to improve, get smarter, etc. I've found that if you acknowledge the worst case possibility with pitchers, you'll never, ever feel good about your staff. You have to consider every possibility. Sale, Danks, Quintana is likely a very good start to a rotation for next season. Throw a Floyd, Peavy, Liriano, or someone else with a good track record and its pretty damn good. If not, KW can work his magic for us On the SCORE they once mentioned the Sox have a winning record when he doesn't have a quality start.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 03:19 PM) My wife won't let me go... something about airfafre, hotel, meals, etc But, someday soon IO hope. Meantime you guys go and cheer extra hard. Make Marty buy I was lucky last year to catch a Sox game at Chase Field. My brother has a friend who had D-Back season tickets 7th row down 3rd. We got to see Jackson vs. Hudson. I live really close to the Sox ST facility. There's very little shade and March weather can be unpredictable.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) Depending on where you park, there's not a lot of traffic to fight. Once you get onto the highway at night on Labor Day, you're set. Or public transit. I don't think there is a such thing on 1-55 on any day or night. I don't live there anymore and probably would have spent money on a Jackhammer's game. I use to get a Guiness and nachos for $10.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 03:47 PM) Wrigley is a big tourist attraction too. A lot people there probably aren't even baseball fans, let a lone care if the Cubs win. Yep. If you are into old parks that's a place to go. What's the chances of that being destroyed or Fenway? The sad thing is I've been to Wrigley more than the Cell. But then was when the Cubs had guys like Sutcliff. I was going to go to a Sox/Twins game back in the Manuel era but the lowest price ticket was $25. You could go see Peyton Manning, Edgirrin James and Marvin Harrison at the RCA Dome for $15. There's something wrong with that picture. Sometimes I think Sox fans don't like or trust Reinsdorf. That is probably more ignorance but it's hard to nail why the Sox draw like a 3rd market team. Maybe they could stop b****ing about attendance for a start. There's also "we'll make the team better if you show up". Owners lie about that. See Bud Selig. Could you see a Domino's commercial, "We'll make our pizza better only if you order more"?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 01:33 PM) It's amazing how many big name players the Sox have added and still can't quite shake the hex of not making the playoffs. Good moves to bring in Myers, Youk and Liriano and even immediately fill a need for a week with Wise instead of going with some minor league hack of ours. KW has done all he can do, really. Now it's up to the players to close it out with a good 3.5 weeks or give up. Liriano is not big name. Sox will get 3 1/2, 4 star players (in my book) or past their prime. They pass on a Pujols, Fielder type player. Which is OK since the Sox have bad luck with those guys. I think the last time they made a big time splash was getting the great hitter from Cleveland to protect Frank and that didn't work out.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 03:07 PM) Are you serious? Peavy easily bests Mark Buehrle on paper. Good god, man. What paper did you check? Wall paper? http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buehrma01.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peavyja01.shtml I was speaking from a career reference. Defintely not from a shoulda kept Buehrle. Time to stop drinking that Peavy Kool-aid.

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 02:49 PM) After reading today's stupid article, I was real close to going. But home cooking and a comfy couch sounds better than sitting outside after doing yard work in a hot day. That said, I will be going with my old man to the Detroit series next week on Monday or Tuesday. A lot would depend on how far you are from the stadium. Who wants to fight the traffic home on a night game that's on a holiday. I would prefer a day game.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 03:00 PM) That article isn't so biased, actually. Points out that our television viewership has increased, more families attend Sox games (theoretically leading to more 2nd/3rd generation fans)... There's not such a HUGE disparity in the numbers as one would have thought...less than 10% for college graduates, etc. To boost excitement and attendance, the Sox are offering aggressive ticket discounts for the upcoming 10-game home stand, which includes what likely will be a playoff-critical, four-game series with the Detroit Tigers. Tickets are priced as low as $7 for upper deck seats and $18 for lower-level reserved seats. Gee, great Brooks....finally. But I guess it's better late than never. Maybe they didn't want the embarassment of NUMEROUS empty seats for a first place team playing home games in September. And it's a bit hard to fault fans after all those consecutive losses to DET. All Sox fans are discouraged, to an extent. But the real fans will be out there again tonight. Every day is a new day in baseball, that's the beauty of a 162 game season. So what if it says Cub fans are better at supporting their team? People want to dump that on the lap of the fans where in real world marketing it is on the owners. Day baseball and WGN did more for the Cubs for fans 40 and older. I use to be a Cub when I was in grade school. You got home and turned on WGN because that's what you watched because of Ray Rayner and Bozo. That was the team you were exposed to. Exposure has a lot to do with it. IF you don't have that then winning seems to work. Competitive doesn't.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2012 -> 02:51 PM) Just goes to show you kids like Esmil Rogers can show up from the NL, have no prior history against the Tiggers, and go out and put goose-eggs on the scoreboard. Kid has an 8+ ERA for the Rockies and they gave him away for cash considerations. Do we have anyone you would trust with a 1 run lead in the 8th inning to get 3 outs against DET? I don't think so...MAYBE, just MAYBE, Myers. But trust? No way. That's how 2005 worked for the Sox. Someone forgot to tell Iguchi, Uribe, Dye and Pods that they are suppose to roll over against the Twins. But eventually they buy into it. That would also depend which 3 are batting for the Tigers in the 8th. I haven't seen anyone lately do a good job of keeping Fielder or Cabrera off the bases past the 7th. any why couldn't Delmon Young save that choke job for last night?
