  1. IF the Sox weren't slumping, they probably would have tagged Verlander for 4 runs. Verlander is not Verlander sharp tonight.
  2. It's also important to have good at bats so Sale can settle down. That other pitch that almost went out was a dammit I'm pissed pitch.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 07:28 PM) I have no idea, it's absolutely insane. There was such an uproar about it on Friday, and still nothing happened. They just refuse to make things easier for them right now. Even these dopey ESPN announcers suggested this when Hudson was up.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 07:27 PM) DAMNIT HUDSON. Just when you think you can trust Hudson-he'll f*** ya.
  5. Wow, got out of an inning throwin' in the 70's, almost Mark B style. I wish I could see this game on the Tigers broadcast. It's great. ESPN sucks.
  6. Just tuned in. Howz Sale throwin? I would laugh my ass off if Sox win 1-0. BTW ESPN is brutal.
  7. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) Logically we're screwed, recent history at Comerica, injuries , Verlander, less than ideal lineup but screw logic !! Which may work. You have more guys in the lineup that can bunt.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 12:58 PM) So is Peavy...he has choked 3 times against the Tigers. No way they bring him back at those salary numbers for 2013. All things considered, what starter on the trade market was going to give you 5 good starts out of 7 and cost you next to nothing? Would we be any better off with Greinke now, having had to trade Trayce Thompson to get him? We have such an old core with AJ/Dunn/Rios/Konerko/Youk/Alexei that we need to reinvigorate it with some young power bats. We might have missed with Mitchell (still believe he's got a shot), but Thompson and Viciedo both have the ability to be 30+ home run guys in the future. And Hawkins, too. Hopefully Kenny shops Dunn to the NL. Sad is some of the replacements would be Morel and Flowers. Just think how bad this team would be with Beckham, Morel and Flowers in the lineup? I think they work some deal with Youk. As for Rios, playing RF and working with Manto is like having a new player on the team.
  9. QUOTE (ROC Sox Fan @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 02:13 PM) What are the Trash Kats running out for their lineup? Sunday style too, or let's f***ing sweep style? Leyland plays Cabrera and Fielder every game. Who wouldn't? Either one of them going into a slump is fine by me.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 12:53 PM) He's about as good a fit as Brett Myers at $10 million next year for the Sox or Morel coming into the season as the starter at 3B. Flowers at C, I guess we might have no choice but to live with that one. Thinking about the possibility of not making the playoffs for the first time, it's hard to take away anything from this season...and 2011 was the most disappointing year in memory, not sure how we'll feel about the off-season until it gets here. Somehow, another late season fade and then losing Peavy, AJ and Youk might be harder to deal with than the feelings coming into 2012 because we were in first place for so long. Then you're looking at the definite probability of the Tigers being better (Martinez back, Scherzer coming into his own, Alburquerque back too) and the Sox taking 1-2 steps back. Still, the improvements from Thompson, the draft of Hawkins...the situation is more optimistic than last off-season at least. Maybe Cooper needs to part ways with Floyd and move on...and Thornton, as well. I could see Liriano as his replacement. Maybe he'll be Coop's next Contreras.
  11. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) Dewayne Wise is batting 3rd!! I'm out!! He's the best hitter in the series. Only logic I see is PK will see better pitches if Wise gets on base.
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 01:52 PM) Dewayne Wise is batting 3rd!! I'm out!! Wasn't there a game back in 2005, 06 were Timo Perez was the DH.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 01:16 PM) Do you think some of us are too hard on the Sox or do you agree they do some maddening things? I mean isn't it kind of nonsensical to drop so many games to the team you have to beat out? If the Sox threw a win or two in there against Detroit it wouldn't be so f***ing maddening. Or do you think fans like me are way out of line and we should be thrilled we're in the race at all. I just don't understand sometimes why the team is so dysfunctional. Is it asking too much to win the first game of a huge series once in a while, etc?? Educate me. However it pans out, it may take til Dec. to appreciate this season. I wish we could ignore the history of choke jobs bot few do. Braves, Bills, Viking fans have went through these same emotions. What about Ranger fans? When was the last time a team lost back to back WS? Even if it ends disappointing, I can't see Kenny or J.R. letting down fans after having a taste of winning. Both of them have a competitive nature. We are use to having major disappointment at the end of July and early August. It's Sept. and they are still in first. Kenny may have his mojo back and could bring excitement for us in 2013.
  14. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 2, 2012 -> 08:11 AM) So teams are supposed to win divisions inspite of having no depth to overcome injuries? MLB doesn't have parity? Look at how many teams have made the postseason, made the World Series, and won the World Series over the last 11 years. Even without a salary cap, they have a ton of parity. I'd just rather see the Sox play every AL team 10 or 11 games, with a limited amount of interleague, and just have the top 3 make the playoffs, with the 4 and 5 seed playing to get in. You know, fairness. I'd rather see the Sox get the credit they deserve in the years they make the top 3, and not just have the AL Central be some consolation prize. With the old format, you know that the wild card is the next best team, and possibly the second best team in the league. Now with two wild cards, you could have two teams better than a division winner playing one game to move on. Yes, you can justify it by saying, "They didn't win their division". But in real life observation, those teams can both be better than a weak division winner. I say make it a 15-team division, and send the top 5 to the postseason. There is no parity in MLB. (See NFL, NBA.) That idea sucks. Even Selig would reject it. It's not the Tigers or Sox fault the rest of their division sucks.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 11:40 PM) Sale, Viciedo, Quintana and Reed. The rest of our key contributors are 28+. The core of Youk, Dunn, AJ, Rios, Wise and Konerko are all 30+ veterans. So is Alexei. Beckham's near the end of his rope with the Sox. I guess if you want to count the likes of Flowers, Nathan Jones and DeAza as "a bunch of kids." Except for all the rookies in the bullpen, we're a very VETERAN team, all things considered. It's the pitching staff I refer to as a bunch of kids and the others according to years of experience. Interesting how the fan base has more confidence in Sale and Quintana than the other starters.
  16. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 11:23 PM) We have to eventually beat them head to head. We are not taking advantage of their defensive issues. How man bunts have been sent Cabrera's way? As bad as their defense is they can catch the fly balls lofted into the air on the first or second pitch by our hitters. In baseball you can avoid that by beating the teams you are suppose to. The Sox squandered games against the Astros. Then opening the season with "let's try Thorton as a closer Epic fail part 2. Some first place teams will have a losing record against division opponents. The way the A's are playing and the Rangers are probably glad they don't have to face us for a couple of series.
  17. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 10:31 PM) Okay so all I want to know now is where is the time machine and how do I use it because I have all kinds of s*** I need to go back & invent before other people do/did. Edit: Greg, right now I'm listening to the Tony Robbins link above which I'm sure you've clicked by now. It's time to resolve those inner conflicts. Let's get it right. Let's get this team going. Think of it as unlock & unleash, that's the third pillar. The river runs both ways. People say after getting swept by Detroit they'll go on a tear. OK that's using history. Let's also look at history again. Under Manuel and Guillen the Sox wet the bed against the Twins and under Guillen and Ventura they wet the bed against the Tigers. I love pissing on these "oh the fans need some mojo to rub off on the Sox" just because they are fun to piss on. I praise them when they are good and criticize them when they are bad. Sorry I didn't grow up in the "everyone gets a trophy era". What I do has no effect on their play. The only thing they can do is remove my suspicion that this is another mentally weak Sox team.
  18. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 10:52 PM) “I know this, the last two days our team has been real dialed in,’’ Konerko said. “Maybe too dialed in, I don’t know. Definitely not a passive, scared approach. Very aggressive. On the attack. Just beaten. So you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, get back out there and give ’em hell and see what happens.’’ If this is giving them hell then I guess it's time to pick up our participation medals. He needs to be punched in the nuts.
  19. What really sucked about the loss is the Twins gained a game and a half on us.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 09:37 PM) I agree, criticize the only guy to hit a single pitch of Scherzer's hard tonight The guy is not paid the big bucks to carry the team on his shoulders. I know Verlander is Verlander but I believe this was the best pitching they will face the series.
  21. I want to punch them all in the nuts. If they groan, I'll say, "you got em' now use em".
  22. Either way, the good news is they are done playing at this new house of horrors for the regular season.
  23. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 09:26 PM) It's a manufactured playoff spot. If the AL Central winner gets in with 86-88 wins, while the two wild card teams have better records from better divisions, it's a big flaw in the system. I'd rather see no divisions, a more balanced schedule, and have the top 5 teams earn their spots with correct playoff seeding. Plus again, enough of 18 games against the same four teams. That sounds beyond boring. That punishes teams who might win a weak division and only injuries have kept them from winning more. I couldn't think of a better way to deteriorate the viewing audience of a sport where there is little or no attempt at parity. ESPN would like it.
  24. QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 08:58 PM) After the A's beat the Red Sox again tonight, records with 30 games left: Tex 78-54 NY 76-56 Oak 75-57 Bal 73-59 Sox 72-60 TB 71-61 Det 71-61 LAA 70-62 I wish the standings actually looked like this so we didn't have to play the same four teams 18-19 games a year, and we can stop pretending winning the AL Central is some type of achievement. It is with the additional wildcard.
  25. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Sep 1, 2012 -> 08:03 PM) Funny how the Tigers run out a greatly talented, high payroll team, underachieve, and still compete for a title. When the Sox do that they're out of it in March. LOL! Sad but true!
