QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) That is so true. College sports are out of control in so many places. Sports in general are out of control in this nation. Adults get in fights at kiddie sport events. I don't get the whole college worship mentality. It's monopoly that oil execs envy. Ever heard of a college that said they were going to drop tuition 10% for the nest year? Never.

2012 Summer Olympics Thread

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 03:40 PM) Some great stuff. I'm in that group. BEACH VOLLEYBALL - some of those women look much better at a distance. Close up they tend to get more masculine looking. When I think Olympics....I say who cares? It also irritates me to hear some of the NBA players think they are as good as the original Dream Team. Chance in hell on that one. Are they going to add fly fishing? Remember when Mayor Daley was going for an Olympic Bid. He actually thought having another pro sports franchise would make the city more attractive. Funny comment about British women. The mayo on pasta was gross. That's why I don't eat macaroni salad. -
If I'm a GM from the AL, I might be a little reluctant to try to improve the offense in the lineup by acquiring a bat from the NL to contend this season. It seems to take a while for the NL hitter to make the transition. I guess that would also depend how many games out of first as well.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) Yikes. Nice body. But she looks like she's 45. I'll take it.

QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) Tigers trailing 5-1 as Rasmus just hit ay 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th. Anibal Sanchez is chased after that in his Tigers debut. He went 6+ giving up 5 earned runs on 8 hits 3 walks 3 punchouts & gave up 3 homers.(Encarnacion, Escobar, Rasmus) Tigers trailing 5-1 heading to bottom of the 8th. 3 more outs to score at least 4 runs. CMON JAYS! To the 9th we go. Still 5-1. JA Happ gets the final 6 outs for the Jays & the Tigers lose. Sox up a full 2 games as of now, with a nice opportunity to add to it tonight. It makes me wonder if the Tigers are in more need of a starter than the Sox.

SOX GAMETHREAD: TAKING YU DOWN FOR THE 4 COUNT

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 10:39 PM) Phil Humber against the Rangers lineup. Cant wait to see that one. Neither can the Rangers. They'll skip batting practice tomorrow because they'll get at least 8 innings of it. -

Doesn't anyone pitch inside anymore? Tired of this nibble, nibble, crap. -

The Sox really like this Texas pitching. -
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 01:19 PM) The cubs have tried to do the same thing the Yankees did for years, so did the Red Sox. Combined, those teams have 2 championships in the past 1 million years. It hasn't work out for the Yankees too much either considering what they've spent.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 01:02 PM) Before the modern era, when payroll disparities weren't as significant, they still won 22. So true. They did pay $500K for Ruth though. I don't know how far the modern era would date back to but some of their great players in the 70s-80s were from trades.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 06:43 PM) Gordon is a valuable guy to have on a team as the primary backup infielder. He can play plus defense at three positions and can step in as an experienced starter in case of injury. Plus he's still cheap. That's the way to look at it. I guess we would know how valuable or invaluable he is if he went on the DL.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) Damn, just noticed the last 13 games of the season for the Tigers are against KC/Minnesota. Hope we have a decent lead when that point hits... It's nice to see the Sox beat up the Twins but they struggle against the Royals.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 10:21 PM) You don't see the bigger picture here? Money that we've dished out to guys like Dunn, Rios, etc could have been spent elsewhere, thereby making us a perennial World Series contender. That doesn't appeal to you? When have we ever been a legit WS contender during Kenny's reign? You see what I'm getting at now? The experts had them winning the 2006 World Series in the preseason when they acquired Thome.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 08:00 PM) God, it's been 3 years since we trade for him and people still can't spell Teahen right? Who the f*** cares? I still can't spell Mark Buehrle's last name. I would be up a s*** creek if we had Sox/former Sox player spelling bee. Once again who the f*** cares?

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 05:40 PM) Ditto. While she's attractive, she's a great sports reporter. A far cry from the "all-looks, little talent" group like Erin Andrews. Quin approves this message. Boers and Bernstein would say Erin has a man face.

The past 2 decades I would probably go with the Cardinals.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 11:10 PM) That Passon story was pretty eye-opening. I didn't realize Loria and that team president were that bad. WOW. This is the first time I am thinking Ozzie may only last one year in Miami, cause that Miami owner is nuts. I love the line in the Passon story about how the players hated that speech Loria gave to the team. That he was laughed at behind his back. And Loria was all proud of the speech. I remember reading about that in the Miami Herald. Of course Miami lost that night he gave the speech I am pretty sure. Passon deserves an award for that story though. WOW, what reading. Many owners are. Bud Selig promised that the Brewers would be winners if they got a new stadium. They are good at fleecing the community into using tax payer dollars to build stadiums. Owners don't build them because they know they are bad investments.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 10:30 AM) That's one of the big reasons most people are glad Ozzie is gone. We'd much rather have a manager that plays the guys that give him the best chance to win. Not just blindly go with the guy that has highest salary while continually losing game after game. I tend to find that the norm in professional sports. Money guys tend to play more. I usually stay away from most reality shows because they are staged and it was obvious watching this clip. Much of the pace an understanding of the conversations is lost when they bleep out Ozzie's profanity. Less profanity.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:37 AM) Yes, they get to fill their football stadium, but they are paying a fine that more or less wipes out their revenues from filling that stadium, and allowing them to play avoids unfairly punishing the other Big Ten teams by having revenue losses and last-minute schedule changes. Only other thing I would have liked to see was a TV ban for non-conference games. I guess the alumni are filling that void financial void.

AND THATS A WHITE SOX PIRANHA CLEAN SWEEP!!!

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 05:30 PM) Remember back when the thought of the Twins coming to town meant that they would probably eviscerate the Sox in every way imaginable, and pretty much end any hope of contending? That is why beating on this bad team is fun That were some bone head Sox plays that would have turned into losses 3-4 years ago. The Twins are really bad. They have fallen quickly. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Jul 26, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) Beckham is extremely talented, and has a great baseball acumen. I think that the problem is that he was never given sufficient time to adjust to pro ball. He was rushed to the Big Leagues, with almost no Minor League experience. That hurt him, and necessitated that he get his experience on the big stage. I'm always reminded of what Ted Williams used to say; "It takes about 1,000 at bats in the Big Leagues to figure it out". I suspect that it takes even longer if you don't have any Minor League experience. He'll probably figure it out one day, and become a good Major League hitter. The problem is that the Sox have used up too much of his MLB service time to reap the benefits of his prowess, when he finally blossoms into a star. He'll likely be a free agent by then. That all started with trying to fill a hole at 3rd. The inability of Josh Fields, over paying Teahan, makes me think the Sox should make every effort to sign Youk.
