Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
kitekrazy replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 4, 2012 -> 05:17 PM) You know what's really scary? What if he's a lousy closer? It was a pleasure to watch him start and completely make me forget bout Mark. It's hard to be a fan of this team. He'll fit right in. -
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ May 3, 2012 -> 10:38 PM) Well, those of us who grew up in a time when Eddie Einhorn was ahead of his time with sports on cable learned the game by listening on radio. I got to the point where I really preferred listening to games on radio and getting other things done rather than watching on TV. So, if you love baseball on radio and hate Farmer as your PBP man, it really makes the season less enjoyable. Rooney made for a very enjoyable and productive Saturday afternoon. That's a good point. Baseball is the best sport when it comes to radio.

QUOTE (IowanSoxFan @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 04:59 PM) It's weird that my Lions have to wait so long to draft. Hopefully some people slip like DeCastro, Gilmore, Jenkins, Glenn, Konz, and others. I remember when Millen was their GM and their 1st picks for like 3-4 years straight was a WR.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 08:18 PM) If Emery can pull off something the following dream scenario: -Trade Matt Forte for a 1st -In the 1st, draft a DE and WR or OT -In the 2nd, draft a RB I might consider changing my sexual orientation. No GM would take that. RBs aren't highly thought like they use to. You see less teams drafting a RB in the 1st round. Forte wasn't a 1st round pick.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 07:52 PM) Less than 24 hours away from the MOST EXCITING EVENT IN ALL OF SPORTS. I joke. Good. Modern day draft = zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Thanks ESPN! Back when the draft had more rounds I think it ended much quicker than this. If they did away with the draft Mel Kiper would have to bag groceries.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 08:25 AM) These are the reasons I want to smack anyone who talks about how great of a commish Bud is. These must be fictional creatures....but there's a whole slew of owners that need that smack upside the head.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 09:46 AM) Showtime is doing their Franchise series about the Marlins this year. They had a 30 minute preview last night, and it's fantastic. Really shocked at how much the owner and team president allowed the cameras to film with regards to the Ozzie controversy. Highly recommended for everyone on this site. As for Ozzie, he comes across very sincere and apologetic about the Castro comments. With that said, it sure sounds like they were very, very close to firing him. I doubt they were close to firing him. That's a lot of money to pay a manager from a month of baseball. Unfortunately all of these immigrants are adopting the current American culture of being easily offended. If they are not some tight assed Caucasian will be offended in their place.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 12:41 PM) Rios is incredibly predictable if you pay attention, he's been an every other year guy for most of his career. It just so happens he's coming off of a down year and he's producing, again. This is the year to unload him if you can because he will SUCK next season. That's probably not a secret to even the most naive GMs.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) We haven't seen him stay interested for more than half a season since he came here. To me, as talented as he is, he'd always be a question mark. It could be that he isn't talented. Maybe one of those over hyped players.

Upcoming Games on TV for the Out of Towners

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 05:55 AM) There's a way, but it's a pain in the ass. I'm assuming that's getting a stream from people's homes thru livescorehunter. Hopefully MLB will have another deal where I can watch the rest of the season online for $60. Too bad other pro sports don't do this. I can't stand watching the NFL on major networks and when the Hawks were on WGN is wasn't nationally. I can watch the Cubs but I'd rather watch the grass grow or the D-Backs. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2012 -> 04:04 AM) Maybe it's the idea of team/teammates, not throwing people under the bus, no drama...without all the outside distractions, there's more of an ability to focus on the game and less time for theatrics and off-field drama. We're only making headlines this year for baseball-related reasons, and that's nice to see. That's because the expectations are no where near as what they were last year. Under achieving seems to bring a lot of off field drama in any sport.

QUOTE (OilCan @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) +1 To put Santiago in this situation is having mixed results at best. Yes Hector has four saves, but an ERA over 8 now. He's never closed in his life. Hector should be in AAA building up his arm for starters' innings. Addison Reed's future is to close games. It may not be the right time yet to give him the nod, but it just inched closer. This has Kenny W. written all over it. Let's test success/failure at something new at major league level.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 11:59 AM) It is so funny, we get all of these trade and bench all of the kids right now type threads, yet no one can handle the kids playing for 18 games. If you are going to be rebuilding, retooling, or whatever it is called, this is the type of thing that goes with the territory. Kids go through struggles, and some never do pan out. This is where the Sox are right now. This is the same guy everyone thought would be the savior if he was brought up last season. He'll probably get into a streak this season and no one will pitch to him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 08:15 AM) Hey I am all for suspending Bud Selig. Make it happen! Maybe the real story was Ozzie believes Castro would make a better commissioner than Selig. It just got lost in the translation.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 11, 2012 -> 09:07 AM) <!--quoteo(post=2572639:date=Apr 10, 2012 -> 11:26 PM:name=caulfield12)-->QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 11:26 PM) <!--quotec-->Some controversy has also emerged over Guillen’s stance on Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. A YouTube video of Guillen — who was born in Venezuela — blurting “Viva Chávez” or “Long live Chávez” following his World Series win in 2005 against the Houston Astros became another source of discontent. Where is this video? I've never seen it. Found it: If he spoke the opposite it would have been harmful to friends and relative back home.

http://www.chicagonow.com/chicanisima-lati...astro-comments/ This is way over the top. I guess she's pointing out some cultural ignorance and he should be fired. It sounds like he made a mistake. Funniest comment: Still, if Ozzie loves a Commie Killer Revolutionary, who cares? After all, he got along with Richard Daley.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 10:12 AM) The marketing of MLB is as bad as you can get. and stupid ideas will never cease with the current commissioner

The month of April in MBL is still Spring training except the games count.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 11:26 PM) By Fabiola Santiago [email protected] A man or woman of real convictions stands by them even in the face of criticism, even if it costs them their job. Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/04/10/2741...l#storylink=cpy I call bulls*** on that one. When it comes to the risk of losing an income people will apologize, apologize, apologize. Readers' comment are always fun to read, often better than the article. The article goes around in circles but doesn’t really state anything in itself. It feels more like a random facebook dribble, rather than an article by a professional journalist." And this surprises you? Those are the qualifications for a typical Miami Herald Reporter. Journalistic qualities be damned, you don't need them here. That's like expecting honor and integrity from a politician in Miami-Dade County. Reading other comments, people still don't understand free speech. If Ozzie was from Cuba I could understand his statements that got him in trouble. Foreigners in the American spotlight aren't so quick to denounce their dictators if they have family members living there.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:13 PM) Honestly though, if a Cuban fan decided not to support the Marlins financially based on this, I wouldn't blame them. They probably don't anyway. In the world of sports winning cures everything. That's how Bobby Knight lasts so long. Knowing Ozzie he probably thought his comments would be favorable to Cubans.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:07 PM) Yet he's still going strong and making zillions of dollars yearly. That's the thing. Controversial people will always make money. There is no such thing as bad press.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) I actually feel for Ozzie a little bit here. Yeah, it was dumb what he said. But c'mon now. This is officially ridiculous. He's just one of those foreigners who get confused on what free speech really is in modern Amerika.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 13, 2012 -> 07:38 AM) If Matty winds up actually holding the closer's job, that's probably a big hint that he'll be traded. That's what I was thinking. Probably at ASB.
-
QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 14, 2012 -> 01:23 PM) I'm glad they traded him. At least they got something for him. One thing for certain, Ozzie's time in Chicago had run it's course. I just wish Ozzie's time had run it's course on Sox Talk. (yawn)

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 6, 2012 -> 09:00 PM) Too bad Rios/Dunn/Peavy aren't eligible for TARP financing or the remodified/restructured salary program like SOME homebuyers....we could use the reverse, where instead of modifying the loans to more favorable terms, we could adjust down their contracts based on their underperformance vis a vis expected results. Sometimes you wish MLB was more like the NFL or even the NBA in terms of play for performance. MLB owners remind me of Wash.D.C. Throw lots of money at bad projects and pass it on to the tax payer.
