  1. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) Since things have gotten really funny in here...I figured I'd pass on a little story you guys may like. I just had to post it somewhere: I was at Sheetz (gas station/store) earlier today getting some lunch...And there was some guy there ordering a sub/s. They had big signs showing different types of 6 inch subs and 12 inch subs. I'm standing there and the guy asks the cook/server could he get a 12 inch sub and make each half different. I nearly asked for his autograph. Huh?
  2. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 03:22 PM) Very toolsy, but a longish swing that may never hit for a high average in the majors. I'm well aware he's not a finished product. Sounds like the perfect White Sox.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) Kenny's going to lose a lot of cred if he starts trying to dangle Adam Dunn. However, MLBTradeRumors is complete trash. You have to realize there probably isn't one MLB not on the trading block. It doesn't reflect well on an organization to give up on a big money FA who hasn't finished a full season here. Maybe Rios can be traded depending on how much the Sox wll take on his salary. Maybe 80%?
  4. QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:29 AM) From the sounds of it, the Phils know they have a 2-3 year window to win. Whether that means they'd do a Brown for Quentin deal, who knows. If I were the Sox, I'd do it. http://www.csnphilly.com/07/27/11/Phillies...&feedID=704 So if they need a hitter why are they possibly willing to deal Brown?
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:43 AM) When did Pete Rose DH? Frank Thomas's career was probably extended by the better part of a decade thanks to the DH. I'd say there's a good shot he would not be a hall of famer without it. If that's all he was, I wouldn't put him in the Hall. You never know, he might not make it if he is recognized as a DH.
  6. QUOTE (LVSoxFan @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) McDougal's who I was thinking of, and while he had a good first season, his remaining ones with us were horror movies. When he'd come out of the bullpen, I'd hide under the bed. At some point getting talent from losing organizations isn't exactly a good idea.
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:30 AM) http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/tra...franch_ID_2=KCR Bannister for Hibbard and Melido didn't suck. That's also when the Royals didn't suck.
  8. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) Out. The GM has no clue on how to trade. Or run a farm system. Fans always complain, "why don't they teach these guys the fundamental?" I think that is the least concern of KW. The organization may reflect that. If there are negative patterns emerging in the minors than he needs to hold the instruction and scouting more accountable.
  9. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,6523878.story Sports journalism is getting as bad a political journalism. A lot of people in front offices were asking why the Sox didn't simply use Jackson as a chip to get Colby Rasmus from the Cardinals But what if Jerry Reinsdorf has a good idea that Ozzie Guillen is going to the Marlins after the season, with La Russa leaving St. Louis to replace him? A guy who wants to cut payroll is going to fork out more money on a manager?
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:47 PM) My issue with this situation is that there are veterans in St Louis that should have been able to serve as a buffer between Big Bad LaRussa and poor little Colby Rasmus. Holiday and Berkman could have taken this kid under their wings and protected him a bit, if there really was this huge rift between manager and player. It seems as though ALL the Cardinals coaches expressed frustration with this kid, not just Tony LaRussa. Rasmus may have a prima donna attitude and with his father reacting must have been babied his whole life.
  11. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) If that player was Sale, good move KW! Sale has ACE potential if a transition to starter goes smoothly. That's who it was. They don't want to take on more salary when their top priority is keeping Pujols.
  12. BTW, I really don't see why Cleveland needed him. They need some arms.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) Maybe not for $12 million though. (Although that's about what Dunn is making for OBP and little else) Yeah the Sox I think offered him 14 million. That would have given us another high priced guy to b**** about and another one to add to the fire Walker list.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2011 -> 05:47 PM) http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/20110...-are-black-fans I actually prefer this game at NASCAR events, SEC football games, Michael Bolton concerts (joking) and at Augusta National. The funny this is that the person who suggested it was my African-American date when I went with her to the Master's. We didn't get much over 10 either. Groundscrew/workers, but not patrons as they call them. Don't think Nolan Ryan will be too amused by this, not with his recent health scare and then the fan falling to his death. I'd like to see if he could find two at NHL games. There's probably a zillion reasons why there's that decline. Back in the 60's playing organized sports like Little League was not they only way to play some baseball. You were always close to some lot big enough to play. Today, the well to do neighborhoods with $250K homes hardly have back yards. You don't have to mount a hoop over your garage anymore. They have portable ones. When corporations are looking to help market their products, they prefer NBA or NFL players. The NBA also has a more international appeal. You don't hear of baseball teams in Europe. Our culture has become less interested in baseball. Out West it's not as noticeable but very apparent in the Midwest. It's sad that the roid era put some interest back. Maybe that's why it was looked the other way. I worry though that some dumb commissioner might ruin the purity of the game by coming up with strange ideas to attract more audiences. I'm fearing this more with the NFL.
  15. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 18, 2011 -> 08:57 PM) Career marks are so iffy because it's not as much about the quality of the player, but the fact that they played well into their 40s. I never liked the idea of someone's legacy changing when they are well past their prime. That's why I can't stand the DH. It allows players to pad their stats to get into the Hall.
  16. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jul 21, 2011 -> 10:13 PM) Where would you peg the end of Rose's prime atthough? He led the league in OBP at age 38. He put up a .391 OBP at age 40. Pretty amazing stuff. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playe...1&type=full If any of the "roids" players make in into the Hall, how unfitting to deny Rose.
  17. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 10:03 AM) It's going to be either this or the Swisher trade, but it comes up in every thread around here. It's done with. I hope somehow Zach Stewart becomes awesome just so I don't have to hear the name Dan Hudson ever again. Definitely the Swisher trade. I just think he was demonized by either Ozzie or Kenny, maybe both. The fact Kenny gave up so little points to both. I don't know what it is about this organization and maybe JR needs to shake up this whole organization, but it seems players come here and they regress. Not all of it has to deal with age. Swisher was an example. Adam Dunn has the worst season ever. Even Mark Teahen. Maybe that just as much a reason to fire Ozzie. He might be a more flamboyant version of Dusty. As much of a critc I am of Cooper, he may be the most valuable person in the organization. It's also time for Kenny to stop investing in mental projects. This is the last organization I think any player should go to needing a change of scenery. This is where you go to rot and be less valuable.
  18. QUOTE (since56 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) Once out, wouldn't getting back in be jumping on the band wagon? So if the Sox make a run this season, no one who is out will get on board? Who cares? They don't give trophies or ticket discounts to "real" fans.
  19. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:24 PM) I don't think Ozzie, for all of his big talk, has the stones to quit this job. He'll have to be fired, and I bet he'll go out kicking and screaming whenever he is. More brains than stones. Let's see you quit a multimillion dollar contract. He still gets the money if he's fired unless he coaches another team.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 11:35 PM) At least today, we made steps in erasing (partially) the Teahen and Rios mistakes. And it was a guy from the farm system.
  21. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 08:34 PM) Aramis Ramirez here would be more of the same that we've done for the last few years. Get a good veteran well past his prime. Pass The hitting on both sides of town mirror each other. They all shut down at once. Wasn't that hitting coach from the Rangers suppose to do wonders? Just think if Fukadome signed with the Sox. He would be another Alex Rios.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:42 PM) Teahen, while paid like a major league player, simply isn't one. At least not recently. If you play him everyday, you're going to get something like a 700-725 OPS (it has been a lot worse with sporadic playing time in Chicago)...but any "plus" his offense might give you is more than undercut by his atrocious defense. And he's never going to hit well enough to justify a corner spot in the outfield or DH. The Blue Jays have used Encarnacion over there for a while, and both Teahen and EE are the bottom of the barrel among starting MLB 3B. If you platoon him or play him more selectively, he could be a somewhat productive player but he's definitely not the player a rebuilding franchise sticks at the position for the next 3-5 years and then looks at other positional weaknesses to cross off the list. Wherever you put Teahen (3B/1B/DH/LF/RF), you're creating a problem rather than solving one. I never understood why Kenny wanted him. When an organization known for losing is willing to trade a player, there something wrong. The reason why they lose is they are bad at assessing talent or have poor minor league instruction.
  23. Rumor has it the reason why the Sox didn't get Rasmus was the Cards wanted Chris Sale.
  24. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,4988312.story The odd thing is he believes the North Side 3b is going to come to the South Side. While his own farm system has regressed year after year, Williams has helped the Padres, Blue Jays, Royals and Diamondbacks rebuild. I agree with the first part. But the latter, I have to ask are the Royals ever going to stop rebuilding?
  25. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 03:21 PM) This thread is awesome. I tip my cap to you milkman. I endorse this message and this thread.
