  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 08:50 AM) Well, if nothing else, it seems the team has found a long man / spot starter for 2011 in Tony Pena. That was kind of a surprise find. They should make him a starter. He can do less damage every 5th day.
  2. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) I consider over .500 "respectable". Season aint over yet. I would like to see some sign that they will win another game. They've been stuck at 79 for quite some time. They might finish 3rd.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 09:29 PM) I don't know about you guys and girls but I really think Oz will reach an agreement with Jerry that lets him go to Florida. I expect the rumors of his resignation to happen. Why would you think that? BTW, I think the agreement would have to be between Jerry and Florida.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 09:32 PM) Our pitching staff should be good enough to make us respectable That was the theme of 2010. What an epic failure.
  5. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 02:59 PM) Very odd that he had less talent (offensive potential) on the roster as a whole this year than in previous years, and we actually hit better this year than in recent years under his tenure. If people believe coaches are that important, Coop should be gone before Walker. The two young aces seems to be getting worse.
  6. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) out of curiousity, what makes a good hitting coach? What's the pre-requisite? (spelling?) What qualifications should one have? If I had a good one, I would rather have them in the farm system. Everyone thought that new coach the Cubs got would make a difference. He didn't. I'd love to see the Big Hurt as a hitting coach but expose him to the farm system.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) DH There is a great chance KW botches this up again next year, if they revert to the approach of crying poor and going with another band-aid solution. As far as Dunn goes, a lot depends I think on whether the Nationals offer arbitration. Signing him is going to cost a ton of money, and a pick in the 16-19 range in the first round, it's definitely not worth it. And we've heard over and over again he doesn't want to DH exclusively. If he doesn't botch that up, he'll fill that need only to make another hole elsewhere. Getting a career DH sure cost a lot of money to fix that hole made in CF.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) It's the same damn saga almost every year. When Ozzie's your manager, your team will suck late in the year, even if the rotating DH is in effect. We're like the anti-Rockies. Maybe Ozzie should ask Jim Tracy how he keeps his guys so fresh in September. Blaming the leaders. If you want to go that route, the strength of the team is now the weakness. Pitching was disappointing in the beginning and now. Should Coop get this lifetime free pass? It seems like he can get a good year or two out of pitchers and then a steady decline. How many of the younger guys have progressed on this team? Not Danks or Floyd. Another whacked out theory I have is the Sox organization overlooks mental skills. Too often I've seen enough of the younger pitchers, getting two quick outs and can't finish. They also can't pitch to cover up a fielder's mistake. I guess that's why they aquired Peavy because of his mental game. To do something for the staff that is beyond Coop's abilities. The Twins know they don't have to beat the Sox, because they know the Sox will beat themselves. Why is it that with changing rosters and 2 managers in this decade, they still can't beat the Twins? Maybe they aquire players who can't perform in pressure situations. Getting players from habitual losing organizations like the Royals doesn't help. Getting players from the NL takes longer for them to make adjustments since the AL seems superior in every way. If the team falls to 3rd place, then get rid of Kenny, Ozzie, Coop and Walker.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 09:10 AM) I would watch Sox games even if they were in last place and I would do it to the end of the season. Winter lasts a long time here Me too. Bad Sox baseball vs. crap on major networks, I still like to watch the Sox. BTW, there is a way to watch the Sox for out of staters. Go to Livescorehunter.com and watch via stream torrent. Meanwhile, I get to watch a very productive Daniel Hudson.
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 19, 2010 -> 03:02 AM) The announcers should spend the whole game blasting the Sox for this abomination of a season. Start the season horribly. Have one amazing amazing run. End the season horribly. This season just leaves a horrible taste. It's going to make for a s***ty offseason wondering if we're going to play the same kind of ball next year. s***ty vs. the Central and basically dysfunctional baseball. I think the Tigers define under achieving more than the Sox. Some had the Tigers winning the Central.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:48 PM) If we are talking about someone like Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder I'd do it. Otherwise, I hold on to Gordo. Having a cheap star is worth getting talent over and above his ability. I would want one of those guys for at least four years to do that.
  12. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 09:22 PM) Kenny Williams and our farm system are more troublesome to me than Ozzie. Look at what we have at Charlotte and Birmingham -- and it don't look pretty. And williams needs to explain to The Chairman again why he is paying Manny $4 million and why he traded Hudson and Gonzalez. I don't think Kenny has to explain the money. He says, "Jerry, can I?"
  13. I regret not following the future of the Sox. For those of you following the farm system, I salute you. You guys are the better fans.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) Guillen would do better in the AL with the Braves or Marlins or whatever team, although I sincerely doubt he would be able to beat the Phillies. I just don't know about LaRussa. Isn't he 67? The first issue is the salary, which will be 5X as much as we've ever paid a manager. The second issue is what is his role, GM or manager, or both? I wouldn't mind it for one season, though. To tell the truth, I think if we don't win in 2011, unless something changes dramatically next year, we're really going to be behind the 8 ball in terms of expiring contracts and roster turnover. Of course, I don't think LaRussa would take a one year contract with the constant questions about what would happen in the future from the media...OTOH, TLR would never sit patiently (Piniella had the same problem with the Rays) through any type of rebuild with youth. He would just quit after one year, but you still would have to give him a 3 year contract at the minimum. I would imagine after so many years with one organization he would quit than change scenery.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 06:05 PM) I give DAllen so much credit for stating how big of a disaster the Manny acquisition would be. Needless to say, Manny will not be back next season unless he goes Tulo over the next two weeks. I think fans got carried away with putting the savior image on Manny. He can't solve the pen problems. It's at the point where a pen appearance is an automatic loss.
  16. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Quick and painless in the bottom of the 9th and the Sox drop again They didn't get the memo they aren't playing the Twins anymore.
  17. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:46 PM) I see that Sale got introduced to bullpen failure that has plauged the Sox this season. They all have to join in with the giving up of the big bombs late Maybe it's time for the Sox to have a contest "Pitcher for a Day". Somebody in the stands or A ball, instructional league, whatever could just get someone out and not fill the bases.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) In a heartbeat...there is nothing that Ozzie does anymore that can be considered above average. I guarantee you that at least LaRussa would manage like we're an AL team. I'm also sick and tired of Ozzie's teams fading down the stretch. You mean Kenny's teams. He signed those guys.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Put Ozzies numbers out over 32 years, and they are almost identical. They anti Ozzie group refuse to see that. Give each manager the Yankees and they will probably be identical as well.
  20. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Yep. Then he came in the dugout and slammed his mitt down at the bench. Not sure I want to see that out of him. Fans always find that appeasing. They think he really cared.
  21. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 05:29 PM) Ouch, Sale just got tattoo'd by a Scott Sizemore (WTF?) homerun to LF. He crushed it.... It had to happen eventually. Stink spreads when it comes to the pen.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 07:43 AM) If the Sox played .500 vs. Minnesota, they would be 1 game out right now. How about Cleveland, KC, Baltimore....
  23. QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 03:23 PM) Anybody think there could be any merit to this fluff? No. It's hard to find anything of merit in a Rodger's article.
  24. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) Is LaRussa really that much better than Ozzie Guillen? Not now. I wonder what the attitude among Cardinal fans are about LaRussa. He's no different than any other manager. There's no magic wand when you don't have the talent.
