  1. The good thing is the bats are coming back in the late innings. Time for a fire Coop thread.
  2. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:44 PM) When Thome played for us, everyone on the planet knew he was practically an automatic out when a lefty reliever threw him offspeed stuff that tailed away. But now he's playing against us and what do we throw him? Fastballs over the fat part of the plate. ****. We deserve to lose for being stupid. That's why Thornton will not ever make a great closer. He has no other pitches to rely on. It was his turn to suck.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:35 PM) I sincerely would like to thank Delmon, Thome, and Thornton for making that quick. 3 pitches, and game was over. At least none of us got our hopes up in the bottom of the inning. Will we ever retire a Twins hitter in a save situation? Maybe Danks shouldn't have gave up those runs in the 1st. The pen sucks and it's the worst time for it. Where's the "Coop will fix em"? The Twins have the Sox number. There's no logic at all. Put guys like Pujols, Sabathia and a few more great players, the Twins would still win. Part of it is luck on the Twins side. It just one of those anomalies in the balck hole of professional sports I have come to accept. If the Sox had 80 wins and the Twins 30, they would still beat the Sox. That's just the way it is.

  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:28 PM) What do you expect when Thornton comes out for his 3rd inning of work? He's done it before and I would take my chances with him over Putz and Pena. It would be risky using Sales. Stink spreads on this team and it eventually got to Thornton.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:17 PM) My brother brought up an interesting theory. Beckham seems to always have bad ABs if he swings and misses the first pitch. Hopefully that's only for lack of big league experience.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:16 PM) No way they get suspended for 5 games. We couldn't that that lucky.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) If we get enough runs this inning, plunk Young. As long as it it Putz, Pena or Linebrink followed by a 5 game suspension.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:11 PM) I'm not looking at any numbers here....but I can tell you that just from memory, when we need a big hit, late in a game, especially in the 9th inning, Paul Konerko is not the player I want coming to the plate. My memory might be completely wrong, but that is what it is. Well there's only 25 guys on the roster and PK does have a good avg. with the bases loaded.
  10. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 09:02 PM) I don't see how anyone can rip on Paulie because he failed to come through in one at bat. Without him this year, we are likely out 10 games and the season is long over. Guys like Mantle use to hit into a lot of DPs.
  11. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 08:50 PM) nope we are pissed off now and are going to sweep the series I can except that.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 08:42 PM) I wouldn't call it terrible. Sure, there are $ implications that make it at least questionable. But... In his three starts for Chicago, Jackson has allowed three earned runs in 20 innings of work for a 1.35 ERA. He's also struck out 24 batters. Why should anyone be surprised an AL pitcher of any type would have success in the NL?
  13. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Aug 16, 2010 -> 07:09 PM) pitching and defense or so I have been told about a billion times a year The Twins have been so so at times in this area. I'm guessing but one of the reasons they hit so well is they don't have a lot of free swingers who feel that have to go for the fence. They are very effective than most team with RISP and 2 outs. Supposedly the Rangers have changed their approach at the plate and have success but they improved in defense as well. It's interesting to compare team HRs and some of the worst teams have the most HRs while the Rays and Twins are in the middle. I never understood how the Sox lineup could shut down all at once and see the same thing with the Cubs. I could only think you have too many guys who can only pull the ball. Frank in his prime was not always about hitting HRs. It was easier to walk him because you didn't want him to get a hold of it inside and he would go the opposite field pitching outside for a hit. I think the steroid era has done a lot of harm to future players thinking the home run is the most important thing in baseball. Such things like fielding, base running are not important.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) But mid-season...it's really hard to take other people's talent without having to give up your own. That's why I hate mid season trades. I'm glad they didn't make a trade. Imagine if Sales was traded. That would hurt right now since the pen is struggling.
  15. Of course football fans would argue that "will Brett come back" trumps over everything else in the NFL. Preseason football is lame. There's a debate about extending the season and shortening the preseason which is totally dumb. Football would still be my favorite sport but the product that needs no hype has gotten too over hyped. I've got sort of sick of it. I won't watch a game anymore unless it involves my team. After living in the Midwest so many years, it's hard to waste a Sunday afternoon in the Fall when the weather is so nice outside. Baseball on the other hand is different. You can enjoy an outdoor activity and enjoy a game on the radio. With other sports you can't do this. When the Colts finish their season I don't have near the withdrawal when the Sox season is over.
  16. If Mauer were to charge the mound even though the perception was the pitcher didn't intentionally didn't, would Selig have the balls to suspend him?
  17. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) You have no idea how well I would perform as the Sox DH, doesn't mean I should or should not be the DH. Thome, even at his age, is incredibly more talented than Kotsay, and along with being the same price tag and a great clubhouse guy there is absolutely no denying that it was the wrong choice, and this board has been saying that ever since we let Thome go. Kotsay was never meant to replace Thome.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 04:34 PM) None of which have happened to the Twins despite their guy throwing at Quentin last series. Hard to prove that. Brawls on the other hand.....players fighting with a fellow teammates.....
  19. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) Will? I don't know. Could? Definitely. Sox DHs: 109 games, 409 ABs, .235/.305/.399, 15 HRs, 49 RBI Jim Thome: 80 games, 204 ABs, .265/.387/.578, 16 HRs, 41 RBI Ugh...more urine. You have no way of knowing he would perform equally as well for the Sox. That's like the same dopes who thought Cutler would bring the Bears a Super Bowl.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 03:56 PM) Exactly my point. You said that being macho never does anything and cited the Zambrano meltdown. I immediately cited another situation where the exact opposite happened. Therefore, by your own logic, the Zambrano meltdown has zero information on whether or not "that macho BS" actually does anything. Fines Suspensions Player's decline of market value End of discussion.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) Armando Galarraga got into it with his catcher in the dugout on Sunday and then the Tigers stood up and creamed the White Sox. By your standard 1 example is sufficient to prove a universal truth, therefore, I think all 3 of our pitchers ought to challenge AJ to a dugout fight after the first inning. What? Galarraga had nothing to do with the bullpen implosion. The hitters should have beat the crap out of Putz.
  22. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Impressive. That's one of the worst justifications I've ever heard on this board. Thankyou!
  23. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Read the sidebar: Sox DHs: 109 games, 409 ABs, .235/.305/.399, 15 HRs, 49 RBI Jim Thome: 80 games, 204 ABs, .265/.387/.578, 16 HRs, 41 RBI Any discussion on whether not resigning Thome was the right move or not should end with those numbers. It was a disastrous decision on our part that may very well cost us a division title and play-off appearance. That's why stats are often like urine. Sometimes you just cannot look at a player in a vacuum. It's the lineup you have to analyze. We'll really never know. Best quote out of that article from a reader no doubt. If you think not having Thome will cost this team the division, you need to find another sport.
