  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 13, 2018 -> 07:43 AM) Believe me WBWSF, i know your opinion on Reinsdorf. You whine about him incessantly, the space he occupies in your head is immense Not to be confused with the incessant whining by an apparently uninformed, yet overzealous mod, about anyone, ANYONE, who dares to call into question the horrific record of the owner.
  2. I do love the Sox’ association with WGN throughout the years.
  3. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 16, 2018 -> 10:53 PM) Wasn’t the last decade our punishment? Part of it, yes.
  4. QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 16, 2018 -> 10:30 PM) The issue with Yoan is that while he has excellent feel for the strike zone, I'm starting to think he has no gameplan whatsoever at the plate. I'm not sure that he really knows what pitches he likes to hit and doesn't like to hit, what pitches he's likely to get in a given situation, things like that. The fault there is of course on our coaching and development, but it's a somewhat fixable problem. It may also be the case that our attempts to get him thinking that way are kind of paralyzing him where he's constantly caught in between. Jake, don’t you think with this feel for the strike zone, which I totally agree with, it’s just a matter of time? Time which is on our side at the moment?
  5. White Sox fans have witnessed some kind of baseball this past decade.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 16, 2018 -> 08:59 PM) Nothing pisses me off more than bunting a fast guy to 2nd base Amen!
  7. QUOTE (pcq @ Apr 8, 2018 -> 07:14 PM) Harry quit because he did not want to be on a pay TV broadcast. He became a beer salesman on WGN. Harry never impressed me as an honorable person. Nor was he a fan of Einsdorf. You are correct - he was not a fan of “Einsdorf”, or Reinsdorf and Einhorn, for that matter. Can’t imagine why. Caray only had 37 years in the business vs. “Einsdorf” and their one year - what did he know! Meanwhile, Caray didn’t “quit” on the White Sox. He made a very astute business decision on his part to not sign up for the disaster of a proposal that was the Sox’ with SportsVision in favor of the sure-fire winner with the Cubs and WGN. As for his honor ability, he never missed a game his entire career, spent 25 years with the Cardinals, 11 with the Sox, and 17 with the Cubs. Seems to me he was as honorable to his employers as they could hope for!
  8. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Apr 8, 2018 -> 04:01 PM) Absolutely terrific Sox announcer (as well as the Bears). He was 79. Knew him pretty well, spoke with him often. Here's my interview with him from a few years back: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/in...=11&id=3734 Very sad to hear this news. He was, as you said, a “terrific Sox announcer”, and was so during a tumultuous transition period in the Sox TV/radio booth during the early ‘80s. As the “new ownership” group back then was busy ushering out Harry Caray & Jimmy Piersall and replacing them with Don Drysdale & the Hawk, McConnell represented some consistency during that timeframe, while also delivering a truly top-notch broadcast, both on TV and radio. Unfortunately for McConnell, similar to Drysdale & Hawk, his talents were buried during his years with the Sox due to the very ill-fated “SportsVision” experiment. Not as many people heard him as they should have.
  9. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 09:08 PM) I applaud the effort Delmonico... you weren't close at all, but I applaud the effort.
  10. A nice first week for the Adam Eaton trade.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 25, 2018 -> 12:17 PM) FWIW there is no discussion about banning anyone right now. Being an Eeyore and saying the same untrue thing over and over isn’t a personal attack on anyone at Soxtalk. And I doubt Reinsdorfs feelings are hurt Not today, anyway! It’s the old bean’s birthday!!
  12. 13. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 19, 2018 -> 02:50 PM) Reading that quote a couple times, this doesn't strike me as cocky or presumptuous at all. I mean, it's very possible that they literally TOLD him that it's his job at this point. Giving a guy a sense of security is a pretty common management tactic for some who you feel is pressing due to high expectations. I've seen no indication anywhere that he's loafing or not taking his job seriously. I don't know what it is about the quotation, but I think you're misinterpreting it. Don't let it make you hate the guy, there's much more evidence he has a good attitude than a bad one -- and lots of weird things get said during ST interviews when guys are constantly pressured to say something even when they don't have anything to say. The way he speaks so respectfully of Abreu and how he’s asserted himself in a mentor role for Robert seems to me to speak volumes about the guy’s character, and in a very good way.
  14. QUOTE (balfanman @ Feb 18, 2018 -> 03:48 PM) I can’t link the article from the tribune for some reason, if someone can it would be appreciated. I’m excited for the rebuild, but there is an article there where Yoan Moncada is quoted as saying that he’s excited knowing that the second base job is his. Maybe he was taken the wrong way, but this bothers me. He’s a talented, exciting young prospect, but it is not like he is a perennial all star and mvp candidate at this point in his career. I hope he does that in his career, but at this point he should have to earn it. Yes, he is the most likely winner there, but if he has a horrible spring, and someone else, say Yolmer Sanchez for example, tears the cover off the ball along with his sparkling defense this spring, Moncada should not just be handed the job. I just don’t like the attitude. JMHO. Don’t forget Papa Bear Abreu is with him/next to him every day now, and I don’t think he’d allow Yoan to ever get too big for his britches. But I don’t think that’s going on here. He’s just describing his level of comfort today vs. when he first came up.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 03:11 PM) Am I wrong or wasnt there some beef between Duncan and Hawk a few years back? If I’m not mistaken, the trouble between Duncan and Hawk began way back in 1986, the year of Hawk’s infamous term as general manager. The Sox had a highly regarded prospect back then by the name of Edwin Correa, whom Hawk wanted to trade to Texas for a few pieces he felt necessary for that ‘86 team to compete. Apparently Duncan was very high on Correa and pleaded with Hawk not to trade him, but he did anyway. I think that coupled with all of the other friction going on between Hawk and LaRussa contributed to bad blood between Duncan and Hawk. Oh, and Hawk also layered Don Drysdale over Duncan in some exalted executive role over all pitching matters in the organization, so I’m sure that probably didn’t help matters much.
  16. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 3, 2018 -> 03:45 PM) I bet the other owners feel he has done an outstanding job. Getting a basically free stadium, keeping players salaries down, getting new draft slotting rules, international bonus caps. Perhaps his time these past 37 years would have better spent as an executive of MLB rather than as owner of our White Sox, given these so-called accomplishments of which you speak have not led to the success of the White Sox organization.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 03:35 PM) Bob Nightengale‏Verified account @BNightengale 45s46 seconds ago Chicago #Whitesox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and #Brewers owner Mark Attanasio are appointed to Rob Manfred's powerful executive council. Just what this council needs: the insights of baseball’s most tenured yet most severely flawed and obviously most failed owner with a seat at its table.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 08:44 AM) John Rooney is OK, but he lost me in the 80s when he argued Gary Redus was better than Rickey Henderson. Lol - complete and utter nonsense! What the devil are you talking about now! Rooney never said any such thing of the sort. Rooney began his career with the Sox in 1988 (on the television side, succeeding Don Drysdale before giving way to Gary Thorne on the TV side in 1989), and he only presided over Redus’ final 77 games with the Sox before Redus was traded to the Pirates that year for...the mighty Mike Diaz! Remember Diaz’? No? There’s a reason for that - he was terrible! Diaz’ career didn’t last past the ‘88 season, for crying out loud. Look at Diaz’ career stats. Does he look like a guy for whom a player better than Rickey Henderson IN HIS PRIME would be traded for? Of course not! Which is why the amazingly astute John Rooney would have never said such an absurd thing as asserted by Our Very Own Dick Allen here. It never happened! Rooney may have favorably compared Redus’ skill set to that of Henderson, but he never came close to suggesting Redus was better than Henderson. Dick, unless you have video/audio to prove otherwise, strongly suggest you back off of this obvious misstatement of yours that the great John Rooney made any suggestion EVER that Gary Redus was better than one of the greatest players of all time in Rickey Henderson. Very much a disservice to Rooney’s great career on the South Side.
  19. QUOTE (35thstreetswarm @ Jan 19, 2018 -> 06:24 PM) As the cold stove has shown no signs of heating, I have turned my thoughts to more frivolous baseball-related topics, like uniforms (a favorite of mine). I think it would be worth considering a uniform redesign in the coming years. The Sox are due for one. And especially if the Sox are poised for a renaissance: I've also always liked it when a team decides to do a little rebranding to coincide with a big upswing, ala the 2000s-era Miami Heat. I've also always thought the Sox did not take sufficient advantage of the "White" in "White Sox," or the fact that the franchise owns one of the coolest color combos in baseball: white and black. I've also never loved the Yankees-knockoff pinstripe look. With all that in mind, what about a super crisp white-on-white home uniform? The Nike redesigns of Vanderbilt are a good template, though I'm imagining even more white, like black-outlined white lettering and a super-simplified, almost Penn State football look that emphasizes the "white." https://news.nike.com/news/baseball-vapor-elite-uniform Another possibility would be to pair that with a black-on-black away uniform, ala Mississippi State/Louisville. White/Black. If too gimmicky, though, we could stick with the usual black alternates as aways, maybe with some tweaks. I think the hat stays untouched, though. Thoughts? Another view of potential future uniforms someone came up with a few years ago. It doesn’t focus on featuring the “white” aspect of things, but rather “punching up” the color on the current uniform scheme while tethering the suggestions to the team’s varied uniform design history. https://clumsytuba.wordpress.com/2013/04/04...e-sox-uniforms/
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 09:49 AM) https://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2018...xqlfjTqBoqoI.97 Astros top ten. 5-9 all international signings with 5 and 6 from 2016. It's frustrating to consistently say with the white sox "we won't know for several more years" consistently with our intl guys when the other successful teams we are trying to emulate see returns much faster. The 2016 international draft is a particularly frustrating one. Ten teams were in the so-called “penalty box” that year and couldn’t sign anyone for more than $300K. The typical big spenders including the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, and both L.A. teams were among those ten. Several other teams then took advantage of the big spenders being on the sidelines and swooped in and gobbled up the top 30 prospects with multiple signings. The Padres led that charge with eight or nine signings of those top 30, with one of those players now in the top 100 MLB prospects listing. There are two or three other players from that draft also in the top 100 list now as well. Other teams like the Nationals, Cardinals, A’s, Astros, and Braves were similarly active, and now most of their 2016 signings are featured somewhere in those teams’ respective top 20 prospects listings. Meanwhile, the Sox didn’t sign even one of those 30 players. Not one.
  21. QUOTE (35thstreetswarm @ Jan 20, 2018 -> 04:35 PM) Not exactly - those uniforms had a totally different logo, different font, huge numbers on the pants, etc. The only thing that would be the same would be the home unis would be white instead of pinstripe. Gotcha. So the current home uni sans the pinstripes. Not sure that would work. Seems like that would be too much white, if all you'd have on the uni is the current Sox logo over the left part of the chest. I think you'd have to pull something across the entire chest to eat up some of that white, like those Vanderbilt jerseys do. But I'm with you with having a team called the "White" Sox somehow better emphasize or feature white in their uniforms!
  22. So essentially re-introducing the uniforms from 1987-1990 and simply swapping out the red and blue colors with silver and black?
  23. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 18, 2018 -> 07:28 PM) [/b] It's possible. However, I think he is more likely a guy who will have his weaknesses exposed with extended playing time. The only “weakness” Leury exhibited up until last year was being overwhelmed by MLB pitching. There’s never been anything “weak” about his defensive game or his speed. And last year he did not even remotely look like he was being overwhelmed at the plate. Quite the contrary, actually. He was quite effective getting on base while displaying some surprising power until he got hurt. So not quite sure what you think will be “exposed” with continued playing time for him this coming season. Meanwhile, putting Tilson in some proper context: he was a #12 ranked prospect in the game’s 18th ranked farm system at the time of acquisition a year and a half ago, and he hasn’t played a full game since that acquisition. Hard to see the promise in his return given how much development time the poor guy has missed.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2018 -> 09:32 PM) While Moncada is supposed to have some pop, I don't think he has ever rated the super high power projections that some of our other guys have. It is good power plus top level speed that is high calling card. Moncada sounds more like a 30/30 guy versus a 40 homer guy to me. That would be consistent with the myriad “He’s Robinson Cano with speed” comparisons that have been made about Moncada.
  25. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jan 14, 2018 -> 12:36 PM) Since it will impact the White Sox in ways that can't be determined yet, I thought I'd post it here: Crane Kenney at the Cubs convention on their future media plans: "If the Cubs are successful, it could have a domino effect in the market, with Kenney saying the team is “probably 80 percent inclined” to leave its NBC Sports Chicago partnership with the Bulls, Blackhawks and White Sox. “We like controlling our own destiny,” he said. “You start adding partners, it becomes a little more complicated.” ---------- The Cubs are going to start their own TV Network, that's pretty clear. What it means for the Sox since their deal is up at the same time is unknown from an advertising standpoint and an interest standpoint and a rights fee standpoint. Interesting as always, Lip! Keep up the good work! Makes me wonder what the future of WGN and Chicago sports is after 2019. Do the Cubs say goodbye to ‘GN after almost 70 years if they move to their own network, or do they carve out 20-30 games each year and keep them on the over-the-air WGN outlet? And what about the Sox? Do they get WGN all to themselves with the chance to televise more games if the Cubs aren’t around? Or is that even desirable in this day and age? Despite ‘GN’s ability to reach so many homes in the Chicago market, do they pay enough in rights fees to make it worthwhile from a revenue generating perspective? Has WGN, once the superstation powerhouse of the ‘80s, ‘90s, ‘00s, become a dinosaur and a relic in this day and age, giving way to these new and evolving broadcasting entities? I guess we’ll find out in the next couple of years.
