  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 11, 2018 -> 08:48 PM) Fortunately, Jerry Reinsdorf hasn't ruined my life yet. I suspect not. Hard to think of a way he could impact your life beyond just inflicting the adverse effect he’s had on your experience as a White Sox fan.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 11, 2018 -> 06:23 AM) I actually go through life just fine, thank you. I will say it’s rather entertaining at times to watch you try and navigate through back-and-forth arguments like this one, particularly when you don’t appear to have a leg to stand on with your reasoning. But I have to hand it to you, you give it the ‘ol college try, nonetheless!
  3. In 1989, the White Sox finished the season with the 4th worst record in all of baseball (sound familiar?), finishing ahead of only Detroit (sound familiar?), Philadelphia (sound familiar?), and Atlanta that season. In July of that season, they traded their most valuable Major League asset (sound familiar?) for an elite pitching and elite position player prospect (sound familiar?). They then entered the 1990 season with the youngest roster in all of baseball. And then they went and won 94 games. So who knows what will happen next season? It’s baseball, anything can happen. Not suggesting the 2018 team will be similarly as successful as the 1990 team, but merely suggesting anything is possible after watching what transpired in 1990 after the dreadful 1989 season.
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 10:23 PM) When does our TV deal end? Seems like if you were going to invest in a star, you’d want to do it before those negotiations start. 2019
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 10:12 PM) Hold on a second here. You dislike Reinsdorf as an owner more than I do, yet you legitimately think the White Sox would pay up for a free agent like Machado? Or maybe you are just being facetious? Not being facetious at all, but rather somewhat hopeful. Hahn went out of his way the other day to describe several different ways that he claims the Sox are trying to go about their business differently than in years past. Everything from a difference in draft strategy, to a reticence to dealing with the Cubs, all the way to their approach to dealing with free agency. Based on recent drafts and the recent trade last summer with the Cubs, I found his statements to be very credible, which is why I’m optimistic and excited about the team’s chances with acquiring this generational player named Machado.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 06:00 PM) The White Sox know that they have zero chance at winning a bidding war for Manny Machado on the open market. No one else will say it, but I will. Sure they will be "competitive", and "make an impressive" offer, and maybe even be the 2nd highest bidder. They will even give the "bigger contract offered in the history of the franchise". But they won't be the top bidder, and they know it. LMAO! Could you be more of a wet blanket on this, this being one of the more exciting times in very recent White Sox memory, with the Sox going this aggressively at acquiring a premium talent like Machado? Chr*st on a cracker, already! Here we have for the first time in a long time - a very long time, mind you! - our BIG MARKET ball club talking like a BIG MARKET ball club about pursuing a premium talent like this, a soon to be available asset on the open market, AND giving fairly strong indications that they as a BIG MARKET club will have the ability to meet the market demands and sign the talent long term. When was the last time a White Sox fan was able to get excited about this kind of free agent prospect signing? Yet here you are reigning down with your typical Debbie Downer, “Why, the Sox could never, ever...do this or...do that...” nonsense. As if it were a fool’s errand to ever believe the team could make such an acquisition like this come true. Why, then, should we believe your line of thinking on the unlikelihood of the Sox acquiring Machado vs. what the GM has recently and refreshingly suggested as a different approach when it comes to competing for talents such as his?
  7. The road to the Sox’ next chance for a World Series championship in the oft-mentioned window starting in 2020 (perhaps sooner) will inevitably go through New York, a powerhouse whicj just acquired the services of Giancarlo Stanton during that same timeframe. Our chances of competing with that Yankees team in the postseason is much better served with a Manny Machado in his prime playing in the Sox’ lineup rather than making theirs even that much more imposing.
  8. QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 12:04 PM) "Giolito, Cease/Hansen , Burger, and Bummer....I think this is a package that gives the Os something to sell the fans" http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/ind...o/&page=116 Thought this was amusing. That's a package he would get with 5 years on his deal. Actually, the other deal mentioned in the thread of Fulmer, Anderson, and one from the Adams/Stephens tier actually feels about right if this thing were to go down.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) I don't think young professional athletes carry your stereotypical millennial attitudes. These are guys who have been at the top of their sport their whole lives, always have been in control, I think they see things differently then a young twentysomething first breaking in to corporate America. It's also a very different setting, if a player can play when he's young, he's gonna be successful. Interesting take, given ptatc’s also interesting take on how he thought the young players of today would react to AJ’s potential style of managing. Who knows? Millennial attitudes do register as a risk to corporate America today. Whether they do in the sports world remains to be seen.
  10. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 11, 2017 -> 11:18 PM) This is true. However, throughout his career even into his 30's he showed absolutely no signs of even being polite let alone wanted to work with most people. I don't think young people would respond to his personality. The young people in our grad program want to perceive themselves as near equals to most others and want respect immediately. Which there is nothing wrong with. however, I don't think that would go over well with AJ's personality. Again, unless he has changed drastically since he retired. Corporate America deals with the challenge of dealing with millennial attitudes every day these days. Surprised we don’t read more about that as it relates to professional sports.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 02:13 PM) If you say so, it must be true. Nope, just a point of view.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 02:12 PM) I doubt anyone finds the White Sox as boring as your tired act. The tired act is you deferring to insults when you can’t refute a fact-based opinion. Maybe just not say anything if you can’t contribute in a respectable manner? Hmmmm?
  13. QUOTE (Quin @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) Nah, they really couldn't when talking historical context like Bmags was doing. Non-White Sox fans find our franchise boring, forgettable, and irrelevant all the time. That is the unfortunate by-product of years and years of losing and the infrequency of appearing in the postseason. It also underscores the importance of the rebuild, because that is the only hope at the moment of reversing that mindset if a sustainable winning ballclub emerges from those efforts.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 10:08 AM) Please no San Diego for otani. That is such a boring franchise, I forget they exist most of the time. Great city that can’t create a memorable sports team to save its life. Sadly, a Padres fan could have felt the exact same way about the White Sox signing Luis Robert.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 05:29 PM) The problem isn't with the Sox making offers, it is with them making the largest offer. As for the Albert Belle example, Eloy Jimenez was 7 days old when it happened. They haven't really shown a propensity to set the market for top level players for 21 years now. They have been #2 a lot of times. #1, not so much. ...and all of 3 playoff appearances in those 21 years. Any correlation?
  16. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 10:17 PM) I've never heard of either of your two statements before. Not saying they aren't true but can you provide some evidence to back it up? Such as links to stories and so forth. I’m pretty familiar with the press coverage from back in the day when all of this was going down with DeBartolo, and I have no recollection whatsoever of a direct quote or suggestion coming from the DeBartolo camp one way or the other regarding Harry Caray. What I do know is Bill Veeck was going to continue on with the Sox in the capacity of something akin to SVP of Baseball Operatons under DeBartolo, with Roland Hemond continuing on as General Manager. The significance there is Bill Veeck, if for nothing else, really understood and was committed to the ultimate fan experience. In fact, it was Veeck who came up with the idea of Harry singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at Comiskey Park in the first place. So almost undoubtedly, Caray would have stayed with the Sox with DeBartolo as owner if for no other reason than being advised by Veeck to do so. Bill Veeck - understanding what Harry Caray meant to the White Sox fan experience, while the current owner saw no value in that and instead thought what White Sox fans wanted and needed was SportsVision and Ribbie & Roobarb. Pure genius.
  17. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 10:04 PM) Apparently Seattle's #8 prospect who throws very hard, reportedly hit 104 once . http://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/white-sox...-intriguing-arm ...who is now clocking in as #20 on the Sox’ prospect listing.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) LMAO. Go check out how well DeBartolo's Pittsburgh Penquins did while he owned them. They did win one championship, then he sold. They were Bill Wirtz Blackhawks for most of his 14 years. But I'm sure if he had bought the White Sox, everything would have been peaches and cream. So in the interest of attaining “peaches and cream”, you are happy that the current ownership group prevailed over the DeBartolo-led group in obtaining our White Sox after the 1980 season? ?
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 11, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) 8/22/80 Harry Caray interview with 35-year-old manager, Tony LaRussa. Britt Burns 8.2 shutout innings, Farmer with a one out save. Danny Ainge playing for the Blue Jays. 1990 brawl with the Rangers posted by Greg Hibbard's kid. 8/22/80. *Sigh* Goes to show you how quickly things can change. On this day, Bill Veeck announced that he would be selling the Sox to the ridiculously wealthy Edward DeBartolo. Harry Caray, in this video, is practically beside himself in his exuberance about the prospect. His excitement is like that of a kid on Christmas morning as he talks about how the White Sox fan experience would change, with the team going from the poorhouse to the penthouse in terms of far greater resources available that would significantly enhance the team’s ability to compete. That was August of 1980. In five short months, Harry would, indeed, wake up to a new owner, a new boss, but it would not be DeBartolo and his very deep pockets. A rather different reality awaited him in January 1981. Then, just ten months later, he would end his 11 year career as Voice of the White Sox due to deep concerns about the group who bought the club instead of DeBartolo. Chief among those concerns was what seemed to him some risky and crazy concept called “SportsVision” that was being peddled to him. He would turn out to be very clairvoyant with those concerns. The rest, of course, is history. Caray would simply move up to the north side where he’d spend the rest of his career, 17 years, being the primary force in transforming the Cubs into a national phenomenon. *Sigh*
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 11, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) The Sox payroll was up around $150-170 million like 3 years ago, or did you forget about that? Your what hurts? Please show us facts supporting when the the team payroll was even within $20 million of that. Krikey!!
  21. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 11, 2017 -> 06:39 PM) Lol...ok bro. Is he wrong, bro?
  22. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 31, 2017 -> 06:38 PM) the angels have horrible ratings and they still got a 2 billion dollar tv deal. this misconception that the ratings matter in tv deals like this is laughable. it's the ACCESS to live sports that is the issue. this Is why the dodgers haven't caved to local cable providers in their la sportsnet negotiations. And this world series run is making their case stronger, as LA has been starving for dodgers baseball and the local ratings on tbs and fox are massive. the cubs are leaving. no doubt about that. nbs sportsnet will NOT lose both the cubs and sox, all the while buying out both clubs stakes in a channel that could only have hawks or bulls games in 2020. I will bet real American money that not only will the sox stay with csn/nbc (with a substantial raise in rights fees), but so will the bulls AND hawks. Is that good or bad for the Sox with their next deal with the now-NBC sports network?
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 09:19 AM) What will be interesting is how many games the White Sox keep on the terrestrial station like WGN. If the Cubs start a network, I would imagine they will have all their games possible on it. The White Sox on WGN might actually work a little bit like the Cubs on WGN worked back in the 70s and 80s. It would be to a lesser extent obviously, and purely local, but with cord cutting, etc, not everyone will have the Cubs channel. White Sox games on free TV could build up the base a little bit. I think for all of the games to move to WGN, the team would have to undergo some serious renegotiation with the station. I forget the exact terms, but I believe the team receives significantly less in fees per game from WGN than they do from cable. Probably a trade off for the additional exposure ‘GN provides. Nonetheless, the team would be out what would seem some significant revenue if they flew solo on WGN.
  24. Looking forward to a nice, end-of-season exchange between Hawk & Stoney.
  25. Stoney doing a very nice tribute to Benetti with a most respectful shout out to Hawk here in the 9th.
