  1. Sports Mockery posted this article the other day. Some intriguing ideas, though I'm not sure I'd be on board with all of them.

    - Trade LaRoche, Flowers and cash to PHI for DH Ryan Howard

    - Trade Quintana, Garcia, Montas and Jones to LAD for RF Yasiel Puig and 3B Jacob Turner

    - Sign C Jarrod Saltalamacchia

    - Sign LHP Mark Buehrle

    - Sign LHP Neal Cotts

    - Re-sign C Geovany Soto

    Projected lineup:

    1. Adam Eaton CF

    2. Melky Cabrera LF

    3. Yasiel Puig RF

    4. Jose Abreu 1B

    5. Ryan Howard DH

    6. Justin Turner 3B

    7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia C

    8. Tyler Saladino SS

    9. Carlos Sanchez 2B

    Projected rotation:

    Chris Sale LHP

    Carlos Rodon LHP

    Erik Johnson RHP

    Mark Buehrle LHP

    John Danks LHP

    Projected 2016 payroll: $128 million

Thoughts? I'm not comfortable with Saladino as our starting SS, and I definitely think the LAD trade would be an overpay on the Sox part. I'd prefer to get their young catcher Austin Barnes back in that deal.

Great find! Doubt he will be there when the Sox pick but I'd be all over Applin with his high OBP, base stealing and LHB.

I think Lawrie is the 3B Houston would likely want to trade for Robertson due to his salary and contract. He would still be a cheaper option for the Sox at 3B than Freese. Lawrie's contract is unusual in that it's a deflating contract which is rare. I'd take him.

Heck, I'd offer Robertson + reliever or EJ for Lawrie/ Musgrove/Applin. Doesn't sound too far off.

Are you thinking of Brett Lawrie or Jed Lowrie? Lawrie is with Oakland.

  3. If the Cubs signed Gordon to play LF, wouldn't that just about seal Schwarber's fate? Does anyone really think he can stick as a catcher?

I like that one proposal I read to trade Schwarber to Oakland for Sonny Gray. The A's get set at DH for the next decade, and the Cubs have an easy #1/2 under team control through 2020.

    Exercise Alexei Ramirez $10m option

    Sign C Matt Wieters 2y $26m

    Sign 3B Jae-Gyun Hwang for 3y $12m + $3m posting

Sign RP Antonio Bastardo for 1y $5m

Trade SP Erik Johnson to Cincinnati Reds for CF Billy Hamilton

    1 Adam Eaton L LF

    2 Jose Abreu R 1B

    3 Matt Wieters S C

    4 Jae-Gyun Hwang R 3B

    5 Melky Cabrera S DH

    6 Trayce Thompson R RF

    7 Micah Johnson L 2B

    8 Alexei Ramirez R SS

    9 Billy Hamilton S CF

BENCH: Tyler Flowers R C, Adam LaRoche L 1B/DH, Avisail Garcia R OF, Tyler Saladino R INF

    1 Chris Sale L

    2 Jose Quintana L

    3 Carlos Rodon L

    4 Frank Montas R

    5 John Danks L

    6/LR: Scott Carroll R

Relievers: Zach Duke L, Dan Jennings L, Nate Jones R, Jake Petricka R

    SU: Antonio Bastardo L

    CL: David Robertson R

    ---

    I dont know.

Overall I like this plan, but I'd feel much more comfortable adding another starter. Montas & Danks at the back of the rotation is pretty shaky.

  5. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 22, 2015 -> 01:09 PM)
Did the Cubs really choke? The Mets were just better. You can be disappointed that your season came to an end and be damn proud of what they accomplished as well and I think Cubs fans have that right.

For a team that's supposed to have a great offense--and did for much of the regular season--I'd say yeah, they choked. Team slash line of .164/.225/.297 over the four game series. 4-19 with RISP.

  6. The Cubs will be right back, unless they won't

Great article. Makes the point that anything can happen in baseball and that as good as the Cubs "should" be for the next five or so years, there's no guarantee they'll get any closer to the Series during that time than they did this year. I'm hearing a lot of Cubs fans saying things like, "I'm disappointed but proud. The future is bright." I'm sorry, but if I were a Cubs fan I'd be p*ssed right now. Any time you get that close to a pennant and choke as badly as they did, how can you not be furious? Especially after the fireworks show they just put on against the team with the best record in baseball?

  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 11:46 AM)
Trade Sale and Quintana. Get as many offensive prospects as possible, plus a starter or two that have top of the rotation upside, but maybe a year or two away.

Bank on the collective pool of starting pitchers (the two they could get, Rodon, Fulmer, Johnson, Adams, Danish, Montas) being enough for 2017.

That said, never going to happen.

Sale & Quintana to LAD for Seager, Puig, Urias, Grandal, Guerrero and Ethier.
