QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) You're the one saying they should sweat $10M not me. lol what? No, YOU are making the claim that $10m should mean nothing to them. The null hypothesis is the established fact that making money is important to private businesses with shareholders.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) Isn't Murphy a 3B who was forced to 2B with the presence of David Wright? I would take him. Not sure what it would cost for his last two arb years as he will probably make around $6M this season and who knows next season. The Mets are also looking at moving D'Arnaud from previous reports, so maybe a deal that could fill two holes. Still, all those prospects are in the running for 3B too. It would be an upgrade, but IMO we should be using resources on other things first.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) That to me is the most difficult thing when hou really aren't developing your own guys. In free agency, there may be better guys available next year or the year after but things can change. They might not be as desirable in a year or two, and other teams may have a need and depending on who they are, drive the price up. If the Yankees or Dodgers really needed a firstbaseman, does anyone really think the Sox would have gotten Abreu? Timing plays a huge role, and a lot of it is just luck. Great post

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) I think we should look at the Sox as a billion dollar business and not a mom and pop outfit. That has nothing to do with being willing to waste money. Guess how they became a billion dollar business? By not wasting money.

QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 01:49 PM) Mets are making him available. Thoughts? For the right price, he'd be an upgrade over Beckham and a left-handed bat that could hit in the 2-spot, though I doubt we would be interested. Our best, closest to the majors prospects are all MI, I'd be shocked if went outside the organization to replace Beckham without giving the Semien/Garcia/Sanchez/Johnson team a shot first.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) Different profile. Mitchell has similar power, but will hit for a lower average, while walking a lot more. Also Mitchell, when healthy, has better speed. And even through his offensive struggles, his defense has been cited as being very good in CF. If Mitchell can hit for a reasonable average, with the rest of the tools he brings, he could be better than De Aza overall. but that hitting for average part is a big question mark. Also, I could be wrong, but didn't both of them have significant leg injuries that sapped their formerly elite speed?

I'd assume the lower average and higher walk rate would offset to be roughly the same value. Either of them would ideally be 7 hitters.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2013 -> 12:55 PM) There probably won't be room for him anyway, but if he does step up, it would make a dealing of De Aza or Viciedo a lot easier to do. Yeah, he seems like his ceiling could be very similar to what De Aza is right now.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 05:40 AM) $25M in extra TV money. I'm not disagreeing with your main point, but I would expect a lower payroll because of competitive reasons rather than declining attendance. That extra TV money should easily offset that. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) 6 probably 7 years of profitability too. Mismanagement of the farm system is a big reason why the Sox are where they are. They have the ability to spend money to make up for that mismanagement. It will be disappointing if the payroll is cut. Just because you HAVE money doesn't mean you NEED to spend it all. Free agency provides player value at market rate, by definition. When you are not within range of the prize, it makes more sense to target assets with surplus value. Why would you spend market rate on a bunch of wins that won't add up to a championship? Those are the LAST assets you should add to the mix. In adding payroll, the Sox should ONLY be looking to add assets that have surplus value. If those guys aren't there, spending money for the hell of it makes no sense. Bank it and spend it when those guys ARE there.

Reinsdorf on Score....there's still money in the budget

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 07:54 PM) The pitching could support a 90 win team. They just need to score some runs, somehow. Sure, but that's a very tall order. They aren't even close to an acceptable offense. -

The truth of the last two years, is of course, in the middle of 85 and 63 wins. However, we don't even have that team anymore. Konerko is likely cooked. Rios, Peavy, Thornton, Pierzynski are all gone. You can be confident in Abreu and still get a true talent low 70's win team. It's not impossible for us to compete, but it is very unlikely. We should accept this reality. -
I have no idea at all why you would expect the payroll NOT to be lower. 99 loss team, seven straight years of declining attendance.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 04:47 PM) Although I am one of the strongest advocates of a left handed hitting addition to the lineup, I don't see the need for a left handed hitting catcher. Any solid defensive back stop, who can get on base at a respectable rate would be fine. It's in the middle of the order that this team needs that left handed presence I think it's safe to say that you are THE strongest advocate for a left-handed hitting (middle of the order) addition to the lineup

QUOTE (ron883 @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 04:07 PM) so in 4 years it will be 18m? 20m in 6 years? no, dont think so. these guys wont be making that kind of cash. It's the average of the top 100 highest paid players. It will absolutely go up every year pending some financial cataclysm within the sport. Will it go up that fast? Who knows.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 03:37 PM) Myth. There you have it.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 01:22 PM) Yeah, Jason Parks (BP) referred to his fastball as a "mother****er" pitch.

These BP write-ups, IMO, are easily the best lists out there and are totally worth the 3 dollars or whatever you pay for monthly access, even if you just sign-up during prospect season.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 15, 2013 -> 08:13 AM) DHing Pierzynski, who is an incredily overrated and mediocre hitter, is an incredibly poor idea. People need to stop thinking about AJ. He's gone. This

QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 11:06 PM) Not straight up. Maybe a package of something like Jaso, Doolittle(LH reliever), and a hitting prospect Steverson likes. I loves me some Jaso, but he's a platoon player, I'd hate trading Hector for a platoon player. Catcher is the one place where you can really deal with a lefty platoon player -- because they need to rest so much anyway, it works out.

Isn't he really bad defensively?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 06:08 PM) No, the argument is he has stated the White Sox shouldn't acquire pieces that are short term solutions. Weiters is repped by Boras. You can say maybe this maybe that, but reality is he would be a short term solution who would cost players who otherwise may be part of the long term solution or used to acquire long term solutions. And Scott Boras certainly is a good reason to think Weiters would be 2 and out. I don't think Boras automatically makes it a short term solution. Boras gets elite guys overpaid, but Weiters just isn't an elite guy. We may have never signed a Boras FA, but we also never signed a contract over $60m, or a contract over 5 years... until we just did. I don't think it's Boras that is the problem as much as it has just never been our style to be into the elite free agent game. I don't think Weiters will be up there, Boras or not. But if I believed that Boras makes it so there's no chance he doesn't leave in two years, then I'd agree with you that we shouldn't get him. I want to get under the impression that he can become a long-term solution if we want him to be.

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) I kind of like this plan. Trade Dunn. I don't want to watch him play baseball for my favorite team anymore. You can give me all the WAR's and OPS's you want. Dunn makes me like the Sox a little less. That is hard to do. It takes a special kind of dislike to prefer your team gets worse for the sake of getting rid of a player.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Except the difference is that Stanton will actually command a gigantic contract, Wieters won't. I don't know why people think we could sign Brian McCann for $15M a year, yet Wieters we could not afford to bring back. Exactly. Unless Weiters gets a lot better, he's not going to command more than $12-15m per year. If we want to keep that, we can.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 03:30 PM) Yes, but 2 years vs. 2 years and you have to give up something for Weiters. Haven't you constantly said they Sox aren't going to win anything the next 2 years? So why give up good players for a guy who will be gone in 2 years? The Sox probably won't win anything in two years, but what I have constantly said is that I believe the way to rebuild is in gradual chunks rather than tank-tank-tank-go nuts in free agency. So I am in support of any acquisition that the White Sox make that will retain its value over several years, therefore serving as a foundation. Secondly, Weiters is a 2.5-3.5 WAR player -- large market teams can afford those players, especially when the things they do well aren't the things that are valued most highly by the free agent market, i.e. batting average, homers, RBI. If Weiters remains what he is now or bounces back to his last couple years, the Sox will absolutely be able to afford him when he becomes a free agent. If he breaks out and turns into a superstar, then great. Maybe we can't afford him, or maybe we can, but maybe he also plays so well it pushes our window up.
