  1. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 11:09 AM) That's not entirely true. If Dunn were in Texas or on the Yankees next year as a #6 hitter, I bet he would walk 80-100 times, hit between 34-40 bombs, and K a ton of times. How is that not worth it? The problem is, Dunn shouldn't be a team's best hitter or primary run producer. What he brings is still very valuable, however. He can still change a baseball game in one swing. Why do you think this?
  2. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 09:05 AM) I am saying they hold about equal value to me. Santiago is younger, they both had break out seasons this year, but Castro is now in his arb years. I would do a Santiago for Castro swap, just not sure how much else I would give up to facilitate a deal. Maybe Petricka and Snodgress, but not high ceiling prospects. Gotcha. Yeah more years of team control should make a difference.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 10:31 AM) If the Sox think that Konerko's 2013 was due to an injury that they don't believe will bother him in 14, I am OK with it. Again, he isn't going to be a starter (I am assuming Dunn will be back), and he isn't blocking anyone. Then again, seeing what contracts are already being talked about, maybe Dunn becomes a tradable commodity again? I think Dunn could be moved with most of his contract, I just don't think we will get anything useful back. And, given Hahn's recent assertion that he seeks left-handed offense (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/white-sox-targeting-lefty-bats-have-received-calls-on-pitchers.html), I think it's extremely unlikely that he'd dump Dunn simply to save money or open a roster spot.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 10:23 AM) If you look at the 2012 White Sox, no non regular had as many as 170 plate appearances. It's really not a waste of a roster spot. There are better fits, and Paulie knows this. I'm thinking if he decides to come back, he's feeling well and thinks he can still play at a high level. I don't think he cares to embarrass himself and he has plenty of money. I read an article a few years ago where his dad said he still pulls money out of an ATM $20 at a time. From the interview he gave a month or so ago, it sounded to me that it's coming down to him being sure he wants to commit to being done. Seems like he feels like he has lots of time to be retired, but not lots of time to play, and knows that once he does it, he's closing the book forever. So he's trying to decide if he shouldn't squeeze as much more playing in as he can.
  5. Here's an interesting follow up to that list, FWIW: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/steamer-pro...-sox-prospects/ Steamer projections for ML performance for some of the closest prospects. Surprised that EJ doesn't project better, but I think that's about right for Semien -- roughly a league average player.
  6. The fact that Leury can play both OF/IF and that Leesman can be a spot starter/mop-up/LOOGY in one allows the Sox to pull off Konerko's roster spot with a 5 man bench. It isn't ideal, but really it'll just mean more PT for those two bench guys, which probably isn't a bad thing for a developing team. It would mean Semien in AAA as the roster is constructed today, which is also fine with me. I used to be really uncomfortable with this, but the more I think about it, the more I think it isn't the end of the world either way.
  7. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 05:09 PM) I think that's one too many, right? If they were to bring Konerko back, either Kepp is dealt or Danks is AAA unless I'm counting wrong. Don't they usually go with 3 lefties/3 righties in the pen?
  8. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:57 PM) Semien was never going to be on the bench. He'll either start in AAA or start for the Sox if Gillaspie or Ramirez or Beckham were dealt. So 2014 bench pending a Konerko return is probably: CA Phegley OF Danks IF/OF Garcia 1B Konerko IF Keppinger
  9. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:44 PM) Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN 1h #WhiteSox have spoken to Paul Konerko. Sounds as if there's a spot open for him if he wants it. But he hasnt indicated his plans. Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 41m I always believed if Konerko wanted to return for '14, there would be a spot for him with the White Sox--as there should be. I have made my thoughts on this clear. Really stupid decision in my opinion. I hope Reinsdorf is behind this move because it would make me question Rick Hahn's judgment. Would definitely be a major roster crunch to have Abreu/Dunn/Konerko all at once. Maybe they feel like we have so many versatile bench guys that they can pull it off. This could be a big year for Jordan Danks, but it means there's really no room for both Semien and L. Garcia, and I'g guess Semien is the odd man out there since Garcia can play OF -- unless we dump Keppinger.
  10. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:16 PM) Rather have Carlos Ruiz than salty Why on Earth?
  11. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) For a major Free Agent signing? I wouldnt expect a 90 million signing like Choo. It all depends on what he feels is major which is why its a broad statement. Right. So was SS2k5's reference to a $10m/yr 36 year old catcher as a non-option something that wouldn't fall under what Hahn said?
  12. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) Sure hope not, he said CF. Viciedo and CF don't go together Yeah, I'm assuming that was a typo
  13. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) You know how silly that sounds and how much people can read into that? Its a broad statement and as a general manager you never fully give away what your doing this offseason. I don't know, in the interview it sounded like he was trying to set expectations so that fans wouldn't be disappointed. Plus, it makes sense. He could be lying, I guess, but I wouldn't consider it safe to assume the opposite. There doesn't appear to be any reason to question the assertion.
  14. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) We arent? Who said? I have a feeling that nobody actually said this and its just people trying to add up how much money we have to spend on a guesstimated figure. No there was an interview where he said that. I don't think he meant LITERALLY no free agents, but he implied that the major ones, where there would be a bidding war would likely be off limits.
  15. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 03:57 PM) Rick Hahn said we arent going to sign any free agents....? Yeah he said that Abreu would most likely be our only big free agent signing and that he'd be looking to leverage the trade market for the rest of the offseason.
  16. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 03:54 PM) We arent? Who said? Rick Hahn
  17. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 03:10 PM) This. You'd think they would have learned by now how much it sucks to have a low average, power or nothing, left-handed hitter, let alone just adding one for the f*** of it. Purchased at the beginning of his decline at the cost of a draft pick and to the detriment of their OF defense, assuming they'd "veteran entitlement" him into CF all year.
  18. Cafardo: Here's something that is only interesting if it implies that the Sox are interested in AJ. But don't take it as implying the Sox are interested in AJ.
  19. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) I am not sold on Castro enough to give up anything like that package. Santiago for him straight up, perhaps, more than that is iffy give he has had one good season. I would rather have Dionar Navarro at this juncture because at least I know what I am getting and signing him doesn't deplete the roster at all. He's only had one good season but it was his first full season. We need young upside, right? BABIP was high but not insanely high. 10% walk rate! What makes Santiago more valuable? He's had one good season that had all kinds of signs of unsustainable success.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) I wouldn't even go this high. Again, Castro's a nice player, but what's really his peak? I personally think it's about what he put up this year, with him more likely to be a 2-3 WAR player. This is not a guy I am going to spend a ton on because right now, he's probably the difference between like 73 and 75 wins, and this isn't including the possibility that Flowers and/or Phegley come out and actually produce this year. I am willing to overlook Phegley's numbers to some extent as he was trying to learn the pitching staff, but I think he can be a relatively productive player too. I like Castro, but I think my offer starts with Santiago and we can maybe work from there. If that's not enough, then that's fine. 26 year old pre-arb ~3.5 WAR catcher! I say pay up. Solves such a huge problem for us for years without giving up a ton of money.
  21. I'd go as high as Santiago + Hawkins + Webb. Controllable above average left-handed hitting catchers? Give it up.
  22. I'm giving Hahn the benefit of the doubt here -- this would be just too stupid a move to be realistic.
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) I still wonder how other teams view Santiago. It very well may be the case that some see him as the better value. Better than Quintana? Do you mean better relative to the cost?
  24. QUOTE (dayan024 @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 10:37 AM) Bleacher Report Whitesox Holy crap that would be a BOON to get Lucroy for that offer.
  25. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 10:46 AM) Who is vic? Viciedo?
