  1. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:46 PM) I don't mean to be cryptic. You can expect some action soon. Thanks!
  2. Why would the Player's Association willingly give up free agency rights?
  3. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) I want Bogarts or Bradley so give them Peavy and Crain or Reed for who whatever Yeah we all do, lol. But neither of those guys are going anywhere. Bogaerts is the best prospect in baseball to many experts.
  4. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Not sure...I have my xbox glasses on today though... Peavy, Rios, Reed, and Ramirez for Bogarts, Cechhini, Raunado, Brentz and Swihart. lol, indeed.
  5. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) Hasn't Webster been bad for the Red Sox this year?? We need some hitters I'd love a package built around Blake Swihart, personally.
  6. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Webster, Gecchini, Brentz, and Vinicio way too much for Peavy and Lindstrom? With Cechinni's helium, probably. But I was surprised by Edwards' inclusion in the Garza deal, so who knows.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) I am pretty sure they are owed appeals through their CBA. They CAN appeal, but his point is that if MLB decides to levy a much costlier initial penalty because they have a solid case, it would behoove the players to buy themselves a shorter sentence by waiving their appeal rights.
  8. Free agency is rapidly becoming less and less of a viable way to add talent thanks to the influx of early career long-term extensions, and the players the White Sox need -- big bats -- are among the riskiest and most expensive assets to buy. Note the similarity between all of these: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-anti-t...orst-contracts/
  9. Red Sox to be "aggressive" at the trading deadline: http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2013...ardo-bud-norris
  10. C. Martinez is the weakest of their top tier pitching prospects and the one that's most likely headed for the bullpen. I imagine Wong/Martinez/small piece is more than they want to give up, but given the barren market for starters of the quality, it seems like a reasonable winning bid.
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) And I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. Don't need to be giving any leverage away. Grilli to 15-day DL per MLBTR
  12. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 01:35 PM) http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heym...l-peavy-suitors Not unexpected that Heyman says Red Sox and Cards emerging as top suitors of Peavy possibly with Az in the mix. That's all we've been talking about here. Peavy and Alexei makes so much sense to the Cards its scary . I would like to see us get Stephen Piscotty. I bet they'll try to give us Carlos Martinez, too. I'm not sure how thrilled I am with Wong.
  13. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) Is he for sure out for the season? Actually I'm not sure. I saw someone say on Twitter that he was, but now I'm reading that they haven't announced anything.
  14. With Grilli out for the season, does a trade with the Pirates make more sense tha ever, given that we can package a reliever along with Rios and fill two holes for them?
  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 10:34 AM) No, I could really care less. I don't think this team is far off, even if the record indicates otherwise. I think you go out and get a legitimate CF next year (and move De Aza to LF), deal Viciedo off in a package for a solid, youngish 3B, and you have a fairly competitive team in those two moves. And, even with this said, if they sell off 3-7 pieces, I think a change would be refreshing. More than anything else, I want the season to be over The problem is our core is old and declining. You can't reasonably expect anyone on the wrong side of 30 to improve from their current performances, and you can probably expect them to get a bit worse (not saying it never happens, but you can't expect it to). Plus, which legitimate CF or youngish 3B are you going to get? I think Gillaspie was about the best case scenario there without doing something like trading veterans for prospects. Anyone established isn't going to be available. Maybe Headley, but someone would outbid us. Choo can't really play defense in CF. We could go for a reclamation project maybe.
  16. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) I find it unbelievable that the Yanks would take on 15 mill of salary for next year It definitely flies in the face of everything else they've been doing the past couple years.
  17. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 05:41 PM) Because if that was FMV for an elite DH 3 years ago, what do you think an elite RF gets paid in free agency next year after every teams receives an extra $25M to work with? Also, Fangraphs has him worth $15M on the season, which means he should be worth $20M by the end of the year. While teams should be paying players based on their expected future production, we all know once a guy reaches free agency, more often than not, he'll get paid based on his historical performance. Again, I'm not saying I'd give Choo $20M per year, but some GM likely will do that or something close to it. I know, which means this is a dumb argument because it's a bad idea.
  18. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 05:28 PM) We're paying Dunn $14.5M/year, you wouldn't pay Choo $15M per? I'd do that in a heartbeat, the problem is he probably gets closer to $20M. No, not to play CF from age 32-37 or whatever it'll be. Why would use Dunn's disaster of a contract to justify signing another one?
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 05:21 PM) Why? We've got a ton of money to spend just to get back to this year's payroll, let alone the new revenue from the national TV deal. It might not be the best way to spend that money, particularly if the team wants Thompson taking over CF in 2015 or something like that, but the money is there to do it if that's the way we want to go. I bet you he gets $15m a year.
  20. BOOM Ryan Braun suspended without appeal: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/mlb-...-of-season.html Is Nelson Cruz next? Might they want Rios after all?
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) I knew that it was a mistake to mention Sizemore. Look, that just happens to be my preference for what might be an affordable solution to finding one of the two decent bats, without a long term contract. He will surely want to sign for no more than all of 2014, and hope to prove himself, so that he can sign a better long term deal. That could suit the Sox, if they are only looking for a way to compete next year. The point is; if you don't think he could help, suggest someone else. It doesn't matter who it is, as long as he can contribute, and it won't require a long term commitment. Suggest someone. That's the problem with the whole thing -- I can't suggest someone. There isn't a legitimate middle of the order left-handed bat that can handle CF other than Choo, who we won;t be able to afford.
  22. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:46 PM) I've always thought packaging Peavy and Crain would maximize a return, but Crain needs to return and pitch a couple times. It would be nice to see a bidding war from a few teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see Peavy and Lindstrom go to Boston instead, given that the White Sox will have leverage to demand a quick move on peavy but Boston won't want to commit to Crain until he is healthy.
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:23 PM) I like Sardinas, but I see him as a guy whose ceiling is Alexei (the powerless version). He makes better contact and has been posting reasonable walk rates, though. He should be a substantially better OBP guy than Alexei IF he develops as he should.
  24. Middlebrooks unquestionably has a higher ceiling because his approach is so awful that he could make huge strides by improving it. He's got legitimate pop -- but his best case with his current hackitude is "streaky" with some deep, prolonged slumps. Connor doesn't have the pop to touch that ceiling, but he's got a legit hit tool and a clue at the plate. He won't ever amount to a star, but he's much more likely to be a big league regular now that he's shown improvement on defense.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) Wouldn't be shocked if it's Sardinas That would be a HELL of a package
