The payroll is a hell of a lot lower than the Padres, that's for sure.

Who is available in 2020? Looking ahead to the future

More bullshit, just without the silver lining of being able to sign good players. -
A legit offer that missed the mark by fifty million dollars.

No, everyone’s been paying to watch the team lose on purpose under the specific understanding that it was part of a process where they’d invest when they needed to invest when the right opportunities arrived. They just proved they aren’t really going to do that. They may say they’ll “keep trying next time,” but there will never again be a free agent this risk-free, with a more perfect fit on the roster, in a historically depressed market, where the only team you have outbid is the FUCKING PADRES. The small market Padres. The Sox have $15 million dollars committed to contracts NEXT season. The Padres just beat the White Sox with a bid that doesn’t even make Machado the highest paid total contract OR average AV. When Harper signs, he won’t even be the highest contract in his own damn class. This, unfortunately, isn’t just about Machado. This is the best evidence we’ve ever seen that this regime will never sign a top free agent.
-
This team just explicitly told us they aren’t willing to pay a player $30mm per year under any circumstances. This was arguably the second best free agent opportunity ever, next to Alex Rodriguez. Im trying to resist hyperbole because this is all very hot and fresh, but I’ve never felt worse or more hopeless about this franchise than I do now. It would have been one thing to lose the bidding, but it’s entirely another to lose it when it was at a rate well below what established superstars are already making. If this is how they’re going to operate, the only way they’ll ever win again is through pure luck.

The only reason for anyone to tolerate a rebuild is so that they nail shit like this. There’ll never be a better opportunity to step up than this was. What a joke.

Unbelievable.

Unbelievable

Right, no excuse for the Padres to outbid the White Sox. Our team remains in the driver’s seat, IMO. Really hope they don’t mess this up. When it comes to transactions, the post-rebuild Hahn regime has earned my trust by showing logic at every step. But they could lose it fast right here.

I live in NYC. I have colleagues and friends that live in Astoria. I have encountered literally no one that’s outraged. The LAST thing we need in this city is more people. Why would we want to use tax funds to make that happen? The last reported unemployment rate in NYC is 4.3%.

There’s really no reason at all to get excited about any “done deal” tweet that isn’t Rosenthal, Morosi, or Heyman at this point. It’s possible that some random will break it a day early, but there are so many random weirdos trying to guess correctly to earn their 15 minutes of fame, that every tweet you see must be treated as 100% meaningless. We won’t know who had it right until it’s already done, so there’s nothing to gain from speculating on these guys.
-
I’ve seen some of these deals. It’s significant money if you’re an arb/pre-arb star, but it’s chump change if you’ve signed a nine-figure free agent deal.
-
He did — it was one of those “sign an extension and we won’t have to game your service time” deals.

Hark! Which of yonder hallowed Prophets of Machado shall prove righteous? Father Crane, hath thy faith betrayed thee? In the coming fortnight, shall the skies be pierced by the cries of the faithful? Shall they chant “all hail BROTHER GOMEZ! Like a beacon, thy faith ne’er wavered”?
-
And he was SO good in Lehigh the year before. Like doing everything. Spraying hits all over the field, stealing clutch bases, making unbelievable diving basket catches. Hitting dongers even though he’s small and it’s a pitchers park. He looked so, so ready for the show. Prospects will break your heart, man. Hope he puts it together.

Anyone think Kimbrel would be a good idea?
Eminor3rd replied to turnin' two's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If he settles for a one year deal, it’ll be for a contender. -
At this point I don’t even think Machado is going to play baseball ever again. Maybe he’ll go back to school or maybe be a college coach to something. Or a philanthropist. My mind doesn’t believe he will ever sign a baseball player contract in the remainder of his life.

I guess I didn’t word my question very clearly. Obviously I wasn’t asking for more detail on his injuries, but instead if they felt he was going to be injury prone going forward, and maybe if that was what made them drop him to #8. But yeah, #boomroasted, haha

Nothing the Rockies do can be considered a precedent for the rest of the league, unfortunately.

HAVE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW BEEN AFFECTED BY THE MACHADO SAGA? IF SO, YOU COULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR LEGAL COMPENSATION. THE FIRST CALL IS ALWAYS FREE AND REMEMBER: I DONT GET PAID UNLESS YOU GET PAID
-
People citing Vegas odds as projections always cracks me up.
-
Which, really just depends on how they are defining “slightly more.” If they really are sitting on 7/175, and Machado is disappointed by that, it doesn’t take a huge leap of faith for him to say “if I take 3/120 right now, I am confident that I’ll out earn the back end of the Sox offer in my next deal.” if they’re sitting on 8/240, that’s a much tougher pill to swallow. It depends how hard the Sox are playing this. The closer you fly to the ground, the less margin for error you have. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any way for anyone, media or otherwise, to know how this is being played.
-
If the Sox are foolish enough to let Machado’s camp believe that they actually will not budge on a sub-200mm dollar contract, then yes, time is not on their side anymore. But if they have implied that they will not be outbid, then they should get an opportunity to counter their own offer when Lozano comes to them saying he’s about to short a short term deal for higher AAV. Then, the Sox should move the number up to where it needs to be, knowing confidently that no team is left to outbid them.

I dont think there’s any new information. FWIW, I dont think there’s much of any actual info at all — most of our reported “offer” figures are just speculation from writers that gets repeated enough that people believe it’s actually a leak.

I think he becomes a season ticket sales rep in that scenario.
