Passan: Springer to White Sox not happening
thxfrthmmrs replied to KrankinSox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Naive to think Sox wanted Machado at $250M? I could have point to the countless dumb shit you have posted on this site as naive in a negative way, but I wouldn't have time for that. -

Talk about arguing out of both sides of your mouth here. On one hand, you are suggesting Sox only make offers they know they don't have to pay, on the other, you're saying it's a contract, a 9 figure one, Sox would have love to pay. So which one is it. -

Yes, I don't know why some people on this board refuses to believe this. Sox wanted Machado, they tried to low ball him and Padres made a late push to get it done. That was a failed pursuit, and an embarrassment. But it doesn't take away that had Machado accepted at $250M, Sox would have been happy to have him. It wasn't some dog and pony show to show that they're willing to write a check for 9 figures. -

Your countless conspiracy theories has put you so far removed from reality of how free agent negotiations work. I will ask again, if they never had any intention of signing Machado, why would they have brought in Alonso or Jay? Just to spend $14M and trade a prospect to put up a facade? That seems to go against JR's penny pinching model, does it? -

And my point is, if they offered Manny 9/$250M contract and he signed, then they would have every intention of honoring that contract. The $250M offer they made isn't for show, as some are suggesting here. -

I think you're not dumb enough to make that statement. I think you know the time, effort, resource it takes to go through negotiation process with top tier free agent and give a legitimate pitch, and the fact that they brought his two of his buddies to boot. If they just wanted to give a college try and please the fans, there was no need to bring in Alonso/Jay. They made an effort but came up short. I don't what's so hard to understand. -

Offer vs sign. The premise of the Passan article is JR wouldn’t pay anyone 9 figures. -

Not that I would lose sleep over Pederson, but has Manny saga not teach you anything? -

We also have not pick up options for EE, Gio, and Cishek. This team also made the playoffs. In a normal year, I think what Springer or Bauer commands should be within the expenditure. -

If reports were true that they gave offered 5/$125M to Wheeler last offseason, I don’t see how Springer or Bauer are out of our price range. Maybe Sox are trying to be on the conservative side with it being midst of a pandemic, but I don’t buy the narrative that we don’t offer 9 figure contracts. -
I share the same sentiment on Pace, but Nagy doesn't get away from criticism today. The team has not been able to play 4 good quarters of football this year even against bad teams, and is inept when playing with the lead, it showed again today. If it's one or two games, you could point to the underlying symptoms and make adjustments there, but if it's all freaking year, it's on the GM, the head coach, all of them.
-
The bold still an issue after today. That game plan worked for a half, but failed badly on the last 2 drives. I don't know, on those drives had the run game been better or Mitch not fumbling or throwing a ball on a 3rd and 5 3 yards short of the first down, we might have sealed the deal.
-
It's pretty simple, look at total rushing yards and yard per carry in the second half vs the first half. When you're playing not to lose, you're relying on the run game and short passes instead of opening up your playbook, which limits the effectiveness of your offense and makes it easier for defense to stop you. Why did not play not to lose? Their offense is still bad. I'll give credit that this offense looks a bit better under Trubisky because of his mobility, but that's about it. I've seen nothing today that suggests that this offense is capable of moving the ball against an average defense.
-
But Bears did not score 45 today, they scored 23 in the first half and 7 in the second half. The lack of confidence on this offense is why they were playing conservative and trying to not lose the game, and they ended up losing because of it. The playing not to lose plan has been a theme under this Nagy coached team, which has resulted in a lot of ugly wins,
-
WTF, they faced a bottom 2 defense today. So we're going to ignore the embarrassment we've been calling an offense all season because they scored 30 points against a bad defense, and still lost? And really, they had a good first half and scored 7 points in the second half, against the said bad defense. They'll get credit when they show they're capable move the ball against even a league average this defense.
-
After the last two weeks, I don't want to hear about how Nagy is a bad play caller but a good HC. He's just bad on all fronts.
-
TLR and Zack Collins, Reynaldo Lopez to Cardinals for Mike Schildt, Harrison Bader.

Having quality depth, especially at a low cost, it's not a bad thing. You never know if someone is going to get hurt or if Vaughn is truly ready. I would absolutely consider someone like Schwarber if he could be had for cheap.
-
If we aren't spending big money on Springer or Bauer, why not give Schwarber a shot. Does 1/$5M do it? Let Vaughn spend 2 months in minors, if he's ready by June, flip Schwarber, if he's not, we got some insurance. To me it's a low risk medium reward type of move.
-
Throwing wild parties and putting his $28M salary to good use.
-
Of all the different things we could do to protect Robert’s health, we have reached a point where the only way to do so is to trade Vaughn, who projects to be one of the best hitters in the league.
-
Eloy, age 24, to DH talk is not going to happen for another couple of years, regardless of whether Vaughn and Abreu are on the team or not.
-
But rest of your post suggests you'd trade him and he doesn't have much value. The projection you provided gave aligns with a player who totalled 62 career bWAR, and 149 career OPS+, the second best offensive 1B in the last decade. Would you have traded Joey Votto? These guys do not grow on trees. I'll concede that Vaughn's defense is likely average to Votto's good to great, but Vaughn is still an extremely valuable piece if those projections hold true (and I don't think they're too off). It just seems the projection you gave does not align with rest of your post. And if you truly believe in this projections, then you shouldn't trade that guy.
-
Joey Votto in his age 25-33 seasons averaged 25 HRs and 34 2Bs, with triple slash of .315/.436/.544 and OPS+ of 162. Were you not sold on prime Joey Votto also?
-
Yea, I'd hate to have prime Joey Votto on this team.
