I really like the Sox took this kid. It would be amazing if they had their version of McCann for the next 6+ seasons.
-
Man, at this rate I'll be surprised if any team has interest in him. Guy is more fragile than glass.

Zack Burdi not coming to Chicago this season
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to Baron's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I'm not crazy about letting his clock start if he could potentially need the time in the minors. Rushing the few top prospects the team has when they are a few years away from competing seems odd to me. -
Narvaez has always struck out very little though. Just look at his minor league numbers, he has more career walks than K's. I don't think this guys a major league starter but I don't see why he couldn't have some value as a backup.

It's that time of year again...2016 edition
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to ChiliIrishHammock24's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 09:59 AM) The 6-year WAR difference between 3-7 and 8-15 is 0.16. That might as well be 0. That tells me that a 3 pick and a 15 pick are functionally identical. I know that's not completely true, but that's the way the writer chose to group the information. And that's the range we're talking about with the Sox this year. Here's average bWAR by pick for drafts from 1991-2010. Unfortunately it's career WAR and not 6-year WAR, but I don't think that dilutes the point too much. Pick / Avg WAR 01 22.3 02 13.9 03 10.4 04 06.8 05 15.8 06 11.8 07 13.2 08 10.9 09 09.7 10 10.1 11 09.6 12 12.8 13 13.8 14 09.3 15 11.2 16 10.6 17 11.8 18 02.2 19 05.5 20 13.3 21 04.9 22 07.6 23 08.5 24 02.9 25 06.6 26 01.4 27 02.0 28 05.3 29 09.5 30 02.0 There's a downward slope to be sure, but once you get past the top spots, it doesn't matter that much until about 20th. Teams have done just as well picking 17th as they have picking 16th as they have picking 10th. I'm sure the differences by pick are even less pronounced in later rounds. I would rather have a higher pick because the extra money is good, but I'm not actively rooting for it. I can't sit there while I watch a game and think, "I hope Tim Anderson drives in Eaton and Saladino on a dinger but then Tommy Kahnle blows the lead." That's too much work. Good players pop up everywhere in the draft and that's what I choose to focus on. As far as getting top-10 protection, even that has less meaning for me this year. Is there anyone in their right mind who wants the Sox to sign a guy with a qualifying offer in 2017? Very interesting. Thanks for posting this. -
QUOTE (daggins @ Aug 6, 2016 -> 09:42 AM) Really Narvaez and Kevan Smith should be the catching tandem in the final two months. DFA Navarro, he is a waste of a roster spot. I agree. They were quick to cut Danks, Rollins, and Latos but have to keep a catcher who can't catch or hit. Now that they're out of it, they really should be cutting guys loose that serve no benefit to playing. Play the kids and get the high draft pick.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 3, 2016 -> 05:05 PM) Iy is just a crying shame for this kid and for Matt Davidson and K Smith. You never know if player can come back from those types of injuries, but to say we need to blow up the team because of injuries is a bit much I'm not saying to blow it up because a bunch of rookies got hurt. But these injuries point out a very bare minor league system. There are a lot of problems within this organization that are finally showing face this season. Depth is just one of them.
-
Wow, feel sorry for the guy. I really hope this doesn't destroy his career like what happened to Jared Mitchell (I know they had different injuries, but this doesn't sound good). If the Sox don't realize now they need to blow this team up IDK what will. The lack of even average-replacement level depth is embarrassing.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) "Three year plan" talk was a misstep "Mired in mediocrity" was a misstep Too many mistakes and if anything Hahn has revealed his true thoughts of the ballclub. I know nearly everyone commended him for the truth. However none of us will forget it, and now every move he makes/doesn't make will be based off of it. Couldn't agree more. Hahn has revealed he is incapable of being a GM and just as guilt of the status quo as the other two. Sick of the KW/JR handcuff excuses (and I used to be one of those people). He's a bad GM. "Mired in mediocrity" because the organization IS RUN by mediocrity from the top down. I'm not even upset that Sale or Q weren't traded, they really can't afford to miss on those deals. But I am floored that they couldn't move one or some combo of Frazier/Cabrera/Robertson/Gonzalez/Shields. Looking around both leagues and the trades that went down, there is little doubt in my mind that they didn't have any value on the market. They seriously need to stop trying to patch a sinking ship year after year and start selling. They'll be lucky to even get a top 10 pick in next years draft. This half-assed "re-tooling" is not working and hasn't been for the past decade. If someone would have told me the Padres would have had a better trade deadline I would have laughed in their face.

White Sox trade Zach Duke to the STL Cardinals

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 07:51 PM) That's an interesting and encouraging article. Seems to be a lot of conflicting reports on Tilson. When they first announced the trade I read that he had a choppy swing which made him more of a ground ball hitter. I also read he was considered average as a defender and someone else posted that he had a weak arm. Then I read the Sox scouts rated him a terrific fielder and a line drive hitter. This seems somewhat in line with this article. I hope for once the Sox evaluated correctly. I'm looking forward to him starting most of the rest of the remaining games this season as the Sox centerfielder. If Robin plays Shuck or Garcia over him, I'll be pissed. Already preparing myself for that. -
Finally a tweet mentioning both Sale and Q.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 07:12 PM) It's a bit surprising to me we haven't heard a peep about Melky on the trade market. Has he been mentioned even once? Not that I can recall.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) One thing Hahn has shown in the last 3+ years is a lot of patience. He's set a precedence with other GM's as someone who won't fold or budge much from his demands, I imagine. I'd hope so. I guess it's better than KW, who seemed to just keep on piling prospects into deals to get them done.

Wade Miley was just traded. Interesting to see what the Mariners were able to get.

QUOTE (Deadpool @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) Unfortunately, this organization has done nothing in the last few years to warrant any kind of confidence from the fanbase. It's the fundamental flaw in my belief that I the team needs to blow this thing up. Ands that's scary to think about as well. Do we really want this FO in charge of blowing it up and evaluating the returns they get. Chances are if they can't do it with proven MLB players, how can they succeed with even riskier prospects? The organization is stuck in a rock and a hard place. It needs to happen, but more than likely they will screw it up like they have everything else. -
White Sox trade Zach Duke to the STL Cardinals
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to flavum's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 02:42 PM) He sounds like Jerrod Dyson at worst; Willie Wilson at best. Sorry for the two KC Royals comparisons. Glad Duke is gonzo however. Well, this is the 'give up on a guy' deal by St. Louis. Obviously trading a second round draft pick for Zach Duke means they have given up on Tilson as a top prospect. It's a good trade for the Sox as Duke is no good and it's Tilson's final chance to blossom. Avi never blossomed, but maybe Tilson will. I don't think this is a case where St. Louis gave up on him. Tilson is just 23 and in Triple-A (and doing pretty well). They Cardinals probably feel like they can afford to give up the 12th best prospect in their system and see Pham, Grichuk, and Hazelbaker as being able to contribute more to their organization. -

Fulmer has no business being in the majors at this point in his career. He needs to be in the minors. This organization is pathetic. -
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 02:36 PM) Melky is a nice all around player. Would be a complimentary player for a team. Bruce is a run producing bat that can help put you over. Unfortunately hes not a good fielder. I would think melky would have interest. Hes been the most consistent hitter for the sox. But Bruce will more than likely cost you more to acquire.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 12:29 PM) Will help the noble effort in increasing the Sox draft standing. Absolutely, I'm fine with that too. I'm just saying how brutal it's going to be watching these games. I am all for bringing in another top 10 draft pick.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 12:22 PM) Robertson was the lone Sox reliever to not warm up before the game today. I'd be really shocked if he isn't moved to someone. And when he is, God help this bullpen... After Jones, the Sox will have a bunch of kids/scrubs commingling into tight games.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2016 -> 12:17 PM) Why Bruce, in particular? FWIW, Bruce is in the Reds lineup for the moment. IDK. I think it is possible. This deadline has already had some pretty crazy trades with prospect value. For all we know the Dodgers have offered that to the Sox for either Q/Sale and the Sox still insisted they wanted someone off the MLB roster. If they really are asking for Betts from Boston, it wouldn't surprise me if they asked for Seager from the Dodgers. It sounds like the Sox are asking for everything + the moon in these talks. I agree they should be trying to get overpays, but no one really knows what they are trying to do or the discussions taking place.
