Sale and Crain both on the All-Star team
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Anyone think that Crain being chosen could boost his trade value a little? Maybe offset the fact he was on the D.L.? -
5/7 The Devil Rays Game Thread

Something tells me we get to see Castro's debut too. -
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 06:41 PM) Exactly. People seem to forget that most players moved at the deadline are about to enter free agency, which forces sellers to make certain trades no matter the market for their players. The Sox have all the leverage with Rios. If a team doesn't meet our asking price, we can hold on to him and either look to trade him in the offseason or simply enjoy the surplus value he'll likely provide in 2014. Contenders that are desperate for an OF right now don't have the luxury of time. If they're serious about being a World Series contender and Rios potentially puts them over the top, then these teams will have to seriously consider paying a premium for him. Most organizations are going to value winning a World Series above all else and will take a gamble if they feel they're close. I agree with this for the most part, but the Sox can't count on him being worth more in the offseason. Look at what they did with Floyd. They held onto him for far too long, and should have dealt him when they had the chance. A lot of people on here wanted him traded for something before the season, and I know I would have been happy with whatever they got at that time than a guy on the D.L. I know that is said with hindsight and all, but I just hope the Sox don't screw up getting something of value for him. All they need is for him to disappear the 2nd half and there goes whatever trade value he had/has so far. If they are going to rebuild, then rebuild. Don't hang onto guys as their trade value diminishes. I doubt Rios will bring a high prospect like some predict/wish, but I can't see any team giving up more for 1 year of him over 1.5 of him in the offseason. Sox will not get a Beltran-like trade for Rios next year.

I actually thought the two times I went to the game it was the best it was in years. But that was also way before the team was 15 below back in the beginning of May

The extra $25 million - Will it matter?
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to Leonard Zelig's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 05:03 PM) Also the main thing the Sox can offer in the offseason (as it looks now of course, prior to any trades) is playing time, not $$$. We can give a couple vets the chance to go out & prove themselves on 1-year deals. And when/if those guys do work out, and they are playing for a contract, you can deal them over the deadline next year and pick up something decent while buying time on whoever it is in the minors who should be ticketed for the spot currently being held by a reclamation project. I'd love them to do this with Granderson. He's already almost missed half the year as it is, and I don't think teams are going to be jumping at the chance to sign him long term. -
You = Hahn. Do you heavily shop Reed, Yes or No?
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
No. Not right now. The Sox have a few guys I would try to move first in Crain, Peavy and Rios. Make them the priority and see what you can get for them. I'm not saying I wouldn't listen to offers for Reed, but he would not be at the top of my list of guys I'm actively looking to trade. Depending on the path the Sox take the rest of the season, he could always be moved in the offseason, and who knows, the Sox might actually be able to get more for him then. I don't think Reed is going to bring back what some people have suggested the Sox try to trade him for. As far as I'm concerned, the only untradeable guy on the team is Sale. -
He's got to be battling some nerves in this start. Those walks are very uncharacteristic of him this year. Those strikeouts are promising though.

Daniel Moskos was released to make room for Johnson in Charlotte.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 19, 2013 -> 09:45 PM) Steve Stone like to come off as an intellectual, but he's not. Wins is the most important stat for a pitcher. He said this. Not his fault. That's what happens when you are exposed to bad baseball night after night. Rots the brain and you start spewing verbal diarrhea.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 08:33 PM) Rienzo gave up a 2-out solo homer in the 5th, but he has 9 k's. Nice to see him raise that K rate. He's got bullpen arm written all over him.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 17, 2013 -> 10:04 PM) Must be weird for Crain knowing he probably won't be ending his season in Chicago. I'd think the opposite. He has a good chance to go to a contender and get off this dying team. He ain't getting any younger.

Sox pickup Rockies minor league player
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to elrockinMT's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Didn't they trade Drew Garcia to the Rockies? So this is what the Sox got in return. -
That 20-1 loss to the Twins. Stayed the whole game, laughed my ass off. One of those games that is so bad, it becomes fun.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) He's several years away though -- Dunn can only fake it there for one more year before his contract runs out. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 04:38 PM) Honestly I forgot about Barnum. He is so far away, it is hard to even project him right now. Unfortunately I think the Sox are several years away from being relevant again. I'm sure the Sox will have someone ahead of him in the mean time, but the draft reports of his power and comparisons to Howard make it hard not to dream. But like you both said, he's about as raw as you can get.

Peavy and Crain would probably be to two most valuable guys on the team right now. I really hope all this talk about moves actually allow us to see the organization attempt to build for the future as opposed to the last few years of making a move for the sake of making a move or attempt to stop the bleeding. I read on Twitter today that Peavy said he would be willing to go to another team if asked. This July should be pretty interesting.

I still have hope for Barnum. He's definitely young enough if he can only stay healthy.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 20, 2013 -> 08:58 PM) Sanchez is a little better than Greene as a SS, but Greene is no stranger to that position, and everything I have read makes him average there, so for a back up who can hit lefties, Greene would be my choice. Isn't Greene still under team control though? The Sox always seem to favor keeping the guy that they can't cut, which would be Sanchez.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 17, 2013 -> 08:22 AM) Also, consider this... his ITP condition has a lot to do with blood makeup and body chemistry (had a family member go through something similar, almost killed him). If you were him, even if you wanted to consider enhancing that way... wouldn't you be pretty worried about, I don't know... dying? Seems like he is the last guy who would want to be putting harsh chemicals in his bloodstream. I used to believe that as well, until Lance Armstrong used PED's after beating cancer. THAT is stupidity if you ask me. Phelgey seems to always hit lefty's well, and Charlotte is a hitter's park. Are his stats just as good on the road? Flowers should really be worried. If Phegley keeps hitting like this, there really is no excuse for him to not be given a chance and put Flowers' border-line Mendoza line on the bench.

Desperate times call for...three bold moves
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There's no way Dunn is going to be moved. Even for a guy struggling as bad as Upton is, he's still only 28, and gives you good defense. Dunn is on the wrong side of 30, and terrible in the OF; literally provides no value to any team right now. Why anyone would want a reclamation project in Dunn at this point in his career is beyond me. I doubt the Sox could even get someone to take Dunn off their hands if they agreed to pay 100% of what's left on that contract. He's just one of those players that hit a wall and declined over night. Same thing happened to Dye after the All-Star break in 2009. I agree with Ramirez. I'm not sure how long Jeter is out, but I wonder if the Yankees would be a good fit? -
GT 5/5/13 Sox @ Burger Royal 1:10 pm
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in 2013 Season in Review
QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 5, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) Sox catchers need a major upgrade. I think it's only a matter of time before Phegley is called up. Gimenez serves zero purpose to this team. Time for the Sox to see what they have there. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 4, 2013 -> 06:15 PM) I'm getting to the point where I officially don't like Kepp. I don't know who he reminds me of in the past, but he's pretty lousy at the plate. Guthrie is so confident when he faces the Sox. Until we start hitting him, he's gonna be Hall of Fame worthy against the Sox. Serious question: who's the better hitter. Tony Graffanino when he played, or Kepp? The first name that popped into my head: Darin Erstad...

Link Pretty interesting. Justin Stone dissects his swing and gives his opinion on what he thinks Gillaspie will be moving forward.
