He definitely isn't someone I would call dependable or an innings eater. He always ends the year in the bullpen, which I guess helps the Twins because theoretically they are getting Pineda and Hill back at some point. But still, they gave up a lot for a guy who isn't exactly a wow arm.
-
The Twins just gave up their best pitching prospect for Maeda? That seems odd.

And here I thought the players' weekend uniforms (except the Sox) were bad... Every ST hat design blows chunks this year. New Era managed to find a fucking moron to come up with those. You can't make out what any of those designs are supposed to be. I'm almost insulted as a designer that someone was paid to come up with those.

I did talk to someone at Soxfest about this. I would not get your hopes up. I got the impression these are not going to be available to the general public, and if they are you're looking at a very small quantity so get ready to pay up.

Is Mookie Betts a real option for the Sox with payroll history??
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to Kpet1010's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I do. Don't give away any assets for a rental player that doesn't put you over the top, especially when all three assets have suppressed value due to injuries or poor performance. Regardless, the Red Sox would laugh at that package. Look at the Machado trade to LA for a rough estimate of where to start, and that was for only 2 months. It isn't worth it for our Sox to go down this road. -
Steve Stone Hinting At Another Move: Not Puig / Castellanos
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
We can only hope they must see some adjustment they feel they can make for him to get him to the next level. There is always a chance he could improve slightly against them to be passable, though I would think he's most likely going to struggle given the statistical history. He did show improvement in the second half once he quieted down his stance - I wonder if he faired better against lefties once those changes took place. Regardless, Stoney and the Sox aren't going to paint any type of narrative that they don't believe in Mazara before he takes a swing in a Sox uniform. Thankfully Leury is at least acceptable against lefties, so he wouldn't be a terrible Plan B if no one else is brought in. -
Had a chance to try this at SoxFest in the Goose Island setup they had there. It's pretty good. The description in the article for how it tastes is definitely spot on. Can't say it's amazing enough that I'd drink it every time, but it is good enough to be in rotation to change things up. The people working there said it would be on sale in stores a little after the start of the season FWIW.

Got quite a few actually, but it was a lot tougher than years past. Coolest things I managed to get signed were a Kopech signed Majestic jersey (they were 35% off at the team store), and a black Louisville Slugger bat with Robert, Moncada, Grandal, and Eloy.

I did something similar with Buehrle's perfecto. I was 45 minutes late to a meeting with an admissions advisor for Elmhurst college because I did not want to turn off the radio in my car. They didn't find it amusing, and also happened to be a Cubs fan. Didn't make much difference though, I still ended up going there.

Steve Stone Hinting At Another Move: Not Puig / Castellanos

Stone's always been rough around the edges in fan interactions IMO. There are numerous stories throughout the years about him being a prick to people at Soxfest because he won't write his Cy Young inscription on there or flat out refusing to sign certain items (and I think he reacts this way because he truly believes every adult getting memorabilia of his is out to make a buck - which is absolutely not always the case). Guy can totally do what he wants, don't get me wrong, but he does seem to have a very short fuse and get annoyed quite easily. Some of his tweets could totally be taken as rude, but I've seen him have plenty of positive interactions as well. I think he's just a 72 year old with very strong convictions and doesn't want to bother with anyone that attempts to present an argument that conflicts with his beliefs. My dad is 71 and he's totally the same way at this point in his life, hahaha. -
Even despite his bad defense, I can't believe more teams aren't after him. He's still just 27 and theoretically entering his prime. He must be asking for some absurd number for no one to have any interest in him. I can't buy this crap he's waiting on the Cubs to clear salary. No player is stupid enough to ignore 29/30 teams on a hope and prayer the Cubs magically clear $20-30M worth of dead contracts/salary.

Wow, I remember exactly where I was for this - working my crappy part-time job at Sports Authority. I remember getting a text he was perfect through 7, and my Cubs fan manager wouldn't switch to the tv's from the Cubs game no matter how much I begged. Ridiculous.

Offseason 2019-2020 MLB Catch All Thread
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to iWiN4PreP's topic in The Diamond Club
He's probably the one guy Cubs fans should be relieved about losing. A soon to be 34 going on 35 year old with a steady 3-year drop in fastball velocity is probably a red flag. Even with the high K/9 last year it was pretty clear he wasn't himself last year. -
Funny thing is Covey has a ton of value to rebuilding teams. Guy assures you you're going to lose most of his games he starts.
-
"If a player has more than three years of Major League service time or was previously outrighted in his career (by his current club or another club), he is eligible to reject the outright assignment and instead opt for free agency." Covey was outright back in 2018, so he can reject the assignment.
-
Yea, I almost wonder if they will release him. I get not every arm they bring in sticks around after ST, but there's a lot of arms with MLB experience this year. That seems different compared to years past.

What would it take to get Nolan Arenado?
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to KnightsOnMintSt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yikes. Good job Rockies. -
I think it's a combination of both. Stiever could break into top 100 territory if he has another year like he did last year.

That's a good call, totally forgot about him. I'd probably put him just under Miller on my list due to him really only being a 2B/1B. -

I don't necessarily discount the fact they checked with his camp. There's a good chance they are trying to bring in a few guys on ST invites so they don't have to move anyone else off the 40-man. I don't see a fit unless they plan on keeping Madrigal down far longer than I imagined they would. -
Sox sign P Bryan Mitchell to minors deal
CWSpalehoseCWS replied to ChiSox59's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Covey is not gone yet. Much more likely they can be roommates in Charlotte. -
Charlotte needed an IF that could play SS. This is the Goins move of 2020. Seems like he and Cuthbert might battle it out for the 26th man.

I just don't see them using Bryant to get under the luxury tax, and I think teams are going to balk at the asking price for him. -
This moves Sano to 1B too. He was a -6.7 UZR at 3B last season. Twins essentially locked up their 1B for 3yrs/$30M. That's a bargain for a guy who put up 34 HR's last season and is no longer is a liability in the field.
