  1. Fulmer is a reliever. The delivery is too violent to be able repeat and have command of his pitches. Also the head jerk hasn't improved if anything has become more violent. Sucks the Sox use the 8th pick on a reliever. I believe Sox need to rethink and look at their scouting more carefully. Danish and Fullmer are 99.9% relievers. Majority of the league thought that with Danish and Fulmer was probably split 50/50.

  2. Solid move by Hahn!!!! Montas fastball is straight as an arrow with no movement. Major league hitting will feast on him. He was bullpen arm all the way for me. Also, multiple knee surgeries with his body type. Thompson is a solid #4 OF on a team. No lost except for his defense. Micah Johnson I have never been a fan. He will never be able to play an adequate 2nd base on the defensive side. Rock hands and 2 arm surgeries. Glad Hahn realized that these 3 prospects had these flaws to get a position need. Frazier has a great contract, solid defense, above average hitting. Plus we will be able to give him a qualifying offer if he leaves in 2 years. Hahn I'm sure is now looking for OF help. I still don't believe the Sox will sign anyone with the qualifying offer.

  3. Great Article Brian!!!!

The biggest issue I have with the White Sox organization is with Kenny Williams/Buddy Bell over the years and taking advantage of the loopholes of the collective bargaining agreements when so many teams are. From 2000-2012, the White Sox did an absolute brutal job developing are hitters. I put large part of that blame on Kenny Williams and Buddy Bell. Of course those 2 men are still with the organization and I think their philosophy and development of players showed that are draft picks made limited growth with their hitting ability (Pitch recognition, OBP, base-running, etc.). For many of those years Williams was targeting low ceiling players in our early round picks to save a little money to put on the major league ball team. How stupid because everyone knows when you develop your own players it will save you money in the long run by not dipping into free agency. I believe the biggest reason why White Sox fans are really down with the organization is because Williams/Bell are still with the organization and have had so many years and chances to improve in these areas and they didn't. Making the playoffs only 3 times in that frame is unacceptable and most people would be fired. Since, Hahn has taken over the GM position, the organization has been headed in the right direction when it comes to player development. I believe Hahn has been able to bring in more people on staff (Haber, Paddy, and Hostetler) who are more analytical and on the same page as him when it comes to player development and players to target. A problem is Kenny Williams holding back and not letting Hahn make moves for the betterment of the organization. A lot rumblings last year was Williams was the reason Samardzija wasn't traded at the deadline. I think Kenny Williams was probably the only person in the world that believed the White Sox had a chance to make the playoffs because of a 10 game stretch. All baseball fans could of told that the White Sox were horrible team in all aspects to game last year and had no chance of making the playoffs. Hahn could of easily added two more decent prospects by trading Smardzija and possibly fill a position at 2B, 3B, C, and OF. I still want to see the White Sox add to their upper management and bring in some new voices from very successful organizations with player development like the Astros, Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Rangers have done in recent years.

Many teams (Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Braves, Rangers, Dodgers, Giants, Angels, etc). have taken advantage of the loopholes to the new collective bargaining agreement with the international allocation. Many of them find the loophole early and take advantage of flaws of the system. White Sox need for their brain trust to act early especially with new collective bargaining agreement at the end of 2016 season. The hope is for the Sox to continue bringing in more analytical people to help the organization in this area. International spending has been a big miss on the White Sox organization by not going over allocation on a given year. Yes, we've had some great success with Alexi Ramirez and Jose Abreu by giving very generous/successful deals coming out of Cuba. White Sox again need to explore and revisit the signing some of this great talent out of Cuba/Latin America by going over the recommended slot for players under the Age of 21. I'm crossing my fingers that 2016 will be the year the White Sox go over the allocated international slot because 10 teams already have. This is a great opportunity to bring in a lot of young talent in 2016 if Reinsdorf/Higher Ups decide. Atlanta Braves has already acknowledged they plan on making a big splash. I hope the White Sox do too, but my gut tells me NOOOOOOO!!!

  4. PolishPrince Offseason Plan

Arbitration-eligible (with projected salaries from MLBTR):

    • Tyler Flowers, $3.5M tender

    • Avisail Garcia, $2.3M tender Play him in Triple A

    • Nate Jones, $900K tender

    • Zach Putnam, $800K tender

    • Dan Jennings, $800K tender

Contract options (pick up or buy out)

    • Alexei Ramirez: $10M for 2016 or a $1 million buyout

Don't pick up the option. Alexi offensive/defensive skills are regressing and $10 million is too steep for a 34 year old declining player. Cheaper options out in the free agent market that will put up similar numbers to Ramirez.

    Impending free agents:

    • Jeff Samardzija: $15.8M qualifying offer

    • Matt Albers: Let go

    • Gordon Beckham: Let go

    • Geovany Soto: Let go

Elaborate if needed: Albers had a solid 2nd half of the season, but I'm sure he will be looking for a multi-year contract at $2.5-3.5 million a year. With his body type, mileage, and history of injuries let another team offer that type of deal. I hope Hahn has plans to upgrade the catcher position, so I would let Soto walk. Pitching staff numbers increased for the worse when throwing to Soto behind the plate.

    Free agents

No. 1: Jason Heyward (8 years, $185) Sox bite the bullet and go for the young stud. How often does a 26 year old go on the market. He adds a much needed left handed at bat and brings defense versatility. One of the best defensive outfielders in the game and will make our pitching staff extremely happy. Hate to go 8 years and losing our 2nd round draft pick, but the only way to sign him if you want to play with the big dogs. Sox put an Opt out clause after year 4 of the deal.

No. 2: Colby Rasmus(three years, $27M). Colby is versatile 29 year old outfielder that the White Sox can use. He can play all 3 outfield positions adequately. Also, Colby brings in a much needed left handed bat to the lineup. This gives you option to use Melky at DH role more often. The only question is Colby's makeup. This year in Houston the makeup issues were never brought up and their coaches were happy with his work ethic.

No. 3: Cliff Pennington (1 year: 2 million) Cliff is perfect stopgap player to sign to give Tim Anderson more time to develop in the minors. Anderson needs more time with fielding and plate discipline and Pennington will help do that. Pennington is a little drop off from Ramirez, but saving $7 million to help improve other area of needs is a bigger priority.

No.4 James Russell (Minor league Deal) lefty coming off shoulder surgery. Needs a little more time to get healthy. Worth a flier.

No. 5 Matt Joyce (Minor League Deal) Had a horrible year in 2015. Worth an invite

No. 6 Sergio Santos (Minor League Deal) Copper might be able to work his magic again!!!

    Trades

No. 1: Frankie Montas and Joey DeMichele for Kevin Plawecki Catcher New York Mets. The Sox get their catcher who is major league ready. Mets have young Travis D'Arnaurd and Plawecki is wasting away on their bench. He brings valuable offensive/defensive metric numbers to the Sox. Montas is the power arm that the Mets like and look for that can be added to their bullpen for the 2016 season. The former supplemental first round pick is highly regarded by scouts and at the age of 24 ready for a full time starting role.

No. 2: Tyler Danish and Peter Tago for Arismendy Alcantara/2B-OF and Christian Villanueva/3B. Chicago Cubs are flushed with infielders in their minor league system. Alcantara and Villanueva have fallen out of favor and have been past by other prospects. White Sox gamble on Alcantara whose best position is 2B. Alcantara has regressed a little with his hitting ability and is striking out a little too much. He's super athletic and can play multiple positions. If Sox can get him on the right track with his hitting tool. Sox can have a valuable young asset for the next 6 years. Villanueva was a former Top 100 prospect two years ago. He plays average/slightly above average defense at 3B. He has the potential to hit 15-20 hrs and .250 + average that will walk some. Cubs have nowhere to play him due to the Byrant Factor. Sox give up Tyler Danish whose role in the future is the bullpen. Danish is still young and has potential. This was one draft pick I disagreed with when drafted. Tago is a power arm that the Cubs look for and add 2 bullpen arms that have potential to make their team in 2016/2017.

No. 3 Courtney Hawkins, Micah Johnson, and Kyle Hansen for Branden Shipley/Starting Pitcher Arizona Diamondbacks. Shipley is a super athletic starting pitcher that would fit in nicely in between our lefty rotation. Shipley throws his fastball at 91-94 mph with a lot of movement. He has a plus changeup with great arm speed and tumble at the end. He also throws a plus curveball that he throws for strikes. Diamondbacks have a lot young pitching and Sox capitalize by making this move. Micah has fallen out of favor with the White Sox. Sox come to the realization that he will never be able to play an adequate defensive job at 2B. Sox also give Hawkins and his potential. White Sox track record of not being able to develop their own shows in this deal.

No.4 Jose Quintana for Rafael Devers/3B/OF, Javier Guerra/SS, Brian Johnson/SP, and Matt Light/RP Boston Red Sox. White Sox finally pull the plug and trade one of their big lefties. Boston needs to make a move and gets a Top of line pitcher in Quintana. Sox hate to give up Quintana, but Red Sox are flushed with Top Prospects. Devers is a 19 year old stud that brings an outstanding hitting/power tool. He has explosive bat speed and has the potential to stick at 3B, but if need to can be moved to a corner outfield. Guerra is the #1 defensive shortstop in the minors. He's a plus/plus defensive shortstop and his offensive game is starting mature as well. Both players played at A Ball this year and will start in Double A next year. They need one more year to fully develop and then should be able to rock and roll for the 2017 season. We all know the White Sox are on the 3 year plan-HAHA. Johnson brings us an upside arm at the back of the rotation. Pat Light has closer potential . He throws plus fastball 97-99 and plus slider with tilt. Easily can fit in the back end of the bullpen this coming season, but needs a little more time in the minors. Hate to give up Quintana and his contract, but we need young hitters

    Summary:

I'm slightly below the $135M limit. Right around $130 million mark. Added Heyward, Rasmus, Shipley, Plawecki, Alcantara, Villanueva, Brian Johnson, and Light. We still have most of our high end talent in our minor league system: Anderson, Fulmer, Adams, Michaleczwski. Plus we added probably the two most important pieces of all the deals in Rafael Devers and Javier Guerra. The way I've structured this roster, I think it would appeal to especially what Hahn wants to put in place for the present and future.

The offense and defense is much better. The bullpen is essentially the same except for adding a future closer in Pat Light which he would appear after the All Star break. The starting pitching got weaker losing Quintana in 2016, but Shipley brings #2 starter potential very soon. Brian Johnson brings another back end lefty to the rotation that throws strikes and will enjoy the new improved defense. This team might not make us a playoff team next year. 2017 is the 3rd year of the plan and that’s when Devers, Guerra, Anderson, and Fulmer will make their mark on the big league roster.

  5. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 09:45 AM)
How so? They keep their top prospects that are near ready in Norris, and keep guys like Hoffman, Pentecost. Alford and Reid-Foley are ways away still, and Castro is a power arm out of the pen.

If you can't get a deal like that then you don't make the deal, that simple. Also, in that deal, TOR would get Putnam who does bring value.

Alford is now a Top 60 prospect. Castro and Foley fall into Top 100-150 range. We traded shark to the A's for the entire season and gave them nothng close to what your asking from Toronto. With only 2 months away from being a free agent.

  6. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 24, 2015 -> 09:38 AM)
Here are some packages that I think could happen.

Toronto gets: SP Jeff Samardzija and RP Zach Putnam

White Sox get:SP Sean Reid-Foley, RP Miguel Castro, OF Anthony Alford

    Yankees get: SP Jeff Samardzija

White Sox get: SS Jorge Mateo, C Gary Sanchez

    Giants get: SP Jeff Samardzija

White Sox get: SS Christian Arroyo, SP Miguel Santos, SS Kelvin Beltre

    Pirates get: SP Jeff Samardzija

White Sox get: OF Austin Meadows, SS Alen Hanson

Dodgers get: SP Jeff Samardzija and RP Zach Putnam

White Sox get: OF Alex Verdugo, SP Zach Lee, C Austin Barnes

Wow you are expecting a huge return for Shark. This market is flushed with starting pitching. I think you are going to be very disappointed when Shark is finally traded. That Toronto trade is so far off. Toronto would never do that.

  7. I would trade Shark and Putnam to the Yankees for J.R Murphy , Jagielo, and PTBL. Sox Front office have been a fan of Murphy in the past and is major league ready which is what Hahn is looking for. Also PTBL can be determined based on how far the Yankees go in the playoffs. Have some upside to this deal.

  8. Love this deal. Also being able to get a draft pick if we don't sign Shark is icing on the cake. Robertson will bite us in the ass. Might be good for 2 years, but that 3rd/4th year will be ugly. Long term deals for relievers just don't work. At the same time understand Hahn's logic. We have the money, huge hole now filled, and the Central division is there for the taking. Should be a fun year and it's only Day 2 of the Winter meetings. I know Hahn has some more up his sleeves.

  9. Can anybody answer this. Why did the Cubs and Rangers only get a 1 year penalty from international signings. This year Red Sox, Yankees, Rays get a 2 year penalty for going over 15% the allotted money. Why didn't that happen to the Cubs and Rangers?

  10. I'm in total disagreement with handling of Assignment for Rodon. The biggest jump in the minors is High A to AA. There is no reason to rush Rodon to the majors. Boras is his agent and not good idea to start his clock. Also, if we are expecting Rodon to cut a Sale or Quintana no chance with Boras at the helm. Only thing I can think of is the Sox made a promise to Boras/Rodon when signing to bring more money to his pocket. Yes we did it with Sale, but he also did sign at the slot recommendation and his agent has had great relations with our front office. Also, we will have to add Rodon to the 40 man roster and their will be some tough decisions on who to keep this offseason. No need to rush him up. Everyone knows his future is bright.
