Between Rodon, Giolito and Kopech... the 2nd and 3rd starters for a playoff series are becoming question marks. Yet it's really hard to trust Cease, although he might actually end up retaining the best stuff at season's end.
Of course, some of it's too much familiarity with Giolito on the part of KC, but seemingly hasn't impacted Hernandez.
If Giolito and Rodon are serious question marks, then imagine how every other team except the Dodgers is feeling about their playoff rotation

That's one of the worst missed calls I've seen all year.
Perez does his pitchers no favors as a framer. Great player, but he's so overrated on defense

Why do Collins/lucas still calling for sliders tonight? It’s been a gopher ball barrage and has been beyond Salvador Perez. We would normally say don’t let Salvador beat us, but Salvador has only accounted for 2 runs out of 6.
Lucas knows he can't just be a fastball/change-up guy without the goop. That's why his slider and curve usage have gone way up since June 23rd.

Hopefully Giolito struggling a bit this season will at least make him signing an extension more likely to happen.

Either Hernandez dramatically improved after his start vs. Detroit where he gave up 6 runs in 4 innings or we just straight up suck on offense. Before Hernandez faced us last week his numbers were complete crap.
I think this is a bit different than getting shutdown by KC's other mediocre starters. Hernandez has an elite strikeout rate, can hit 100, and he at least throws 4 pitches. Guys like this are going to dominate even very good lineups sometimes.

At least we'll all finally appreciate Grandal when he's back

Wow, our best hitter is hitting 8th. Imagine how great the rest of the lineup must be.

Yeah, in no world, should AV be at 8, right now.
There's a pretty strong argument to be made he's the best hitter on the team right now, or at least until Eloy's timing is back.

Lineup construction is overrated, but imagine watching this team play for the last month and batting Andrew Vaughn 8th

Feels like every ball Moncada has hit hard the last month is right at someone

He’s pretty impressive
He's the most impressive out of all of the KC young pitchers and he's the only one without big time pedigree

Collins can't catch and his bat doesn't play as a platoon DH.
At least the Sox now finally know they can give up on trying to make him a useful big league piece.

So what happened to the high fastball approach?
I can understand why they'd be reluctant to throw it considering his fastball (until tonight) lost a ton of spin, but I read earlier today the whiff rate on his high fastball is actually up slightly since the crackdown. It should still be a very effective way for him to pitch.

So it's gonna be one of those games, huh

It was 50/50 there. We called nothing but change ups and fastballs that AB I think. No sliders.
Collins/Lucas picked an odd time to go away from the slider considering he's thrown a ton of them tonight
-
Had to be sitting changeup because that looked like a good pitch
-
At least Gio seems to have his good change-up tonight

More first inning offensive failure. What’s it been, two full weeks?

Jose against a sinker baller who throws 99 with a guy on first...what could go wrong?
A ground ball to SS in that AB was the most inevitable outcome we've seen all season

Hit the ball in the air, Jose

Well we haven't gotten caught yet, so whatever they're doing, it's working.
Cease going to his hair was so obvious, that leads me to think he isn't using? you'd obviously get caught doing it, right?
but it's weird
-
Gio has nothing on his pitches, but he does have the pre sticky stuff spin on his fastball. Cease and Lynn have also had their spin rates return to where they were before June 23rd.
I don't think the Sox would be stupid enough to have their entire rotation using the goop, but I'm sure other teams are wondering how they're getting their spin back
-
I wouldn't have hated just letting the ball drop, but I understand not wanting to do that in the 1st inning
-
With the exception of Keuchel, it seems like none of the Sox starters pay any attention whatsoever to potential base stealers
