The Padres have finished better than 16 GB exactly once in the last decade. Cash flow, maybe, but taxes? Not quite. Someone said taxes aren't different in CA than they are in IL. That was factually incorrect and proven so. No one said they wouldn't sign Machado because of taxes.

No one downplayed the Padres because of taxes. They downplayed the Padres because they're the Padres.

And when they relocate to Montreal or Vegas within the next decade, you'll have to find a new team again. Yeah, if they miss out on Machado AND the rebuild ends up not working out, I'm going to have a hard time following the organization after 2023 or so. It's bad enough that baseball is boring compared to football and hockey, it's double worse when the team you cheer for sucks ass.

Right, so if he signed in the NL West, not only would he be playing 81 home games in CA, he would also be playing another 18 in LA and SF since they're in the NL West. That's 99 games in California as opposed to ~6 if he were to sign here and play one series on the road against the Angels and A's each. That's quite the difference.

No. Kimbrel makes sense for the Cubs but they aren't spending. On another note he's a really good pitcher. Pretty crazy that Machado, Harper, Kuechel and Kimbrel are sitting out there on February 13.

To be fair, @teorey23 did say about a month ago that they were going to get Machado.
