QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 05:20 PM) Couldn't resist this one. The White Sox have 1 player in the top 30 in MLB in fWAR, 2 players in the top 60, 3 players in the top 90, and 4 players in the top 120 assuming Samardzija departs. That's some unbelievable core. You'd never guess that a team could have players that good in their core just by chance. Clearly that's something that we have to take advantage of while we have it. Ok so? You can still win with all those guys. Last year the Giants had one pitcher with a WAR above 3. That was Madison Bumgarner at 3.9 and not another pitcher with a WAR above 2. Hudson and Peavy finished with a 1.9 WAR. This year, the Sox had 2 pitchers with a WAR above 4 (Sale 6.2, Quintana 4.8) and 2 more pitchers with WARs above 2 (Shark 2.7, Rodon 2.1 in 23 starts). Hitting wise the Sox managed 2 players with a WAR of 3 or above in Abreu or Eaton. Giants had 4 hitters with WARs above 3 in Posey, Crawford, Pence, and Sandoval. You add a piece or 2 on offense to this core, and they definitely can make some noise next year. Factor in possibly an outlier year from Melky and this offense could do enough with the pitching staff that we have.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 04:49 PM) Who isn't getting older? How does he do it? I edited it lol
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) Jerry pretty much has to be in "absolute win now mode" for him to greenlight those moves. He's getting older, and his core of Sale, Quintana, Abreu and Eaton aren't getting any younger.

I love the name on the jersey look. When I played baseball in college a few years ago, we had our names on the back our jerseys. It felt like a sense of accomplishment, and that people can know who you are, rather than just going off numbers. That's just me though.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 04:25 PM) Reasons Heyward makes sense: Buying his prime years. Elite defensively. Gets on base. Highly marketable. Left handed bat. Could be a 20-20 guy. The problem: You're going to have to cut your losses on LaRoche and move Melky to DH. So Heyward will be SUPER expensive. But damnit, the OF D is fun to picture. Heyward literally helps this team in the categories that the Sox are weak on as you mentioned above. He makes the most sense this offseason, it's just a matter if JR is willing to open the checkbook a little more and get Heyward signed, along with eating LaRoche's last year or moving him to the "veteran bench role" type of player.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 03:37 PM) Contract is already pretty big and not sure which direction the M's are going in with the new leadership but I would love Kyle Seager. Wonder because of his contract if he would be a little cheaper than others. Only gonna be 28 next year, durable, left handed power, and good defense.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 03:15 PM) It might not be fair, but the one thing that would concern me about Upton is his brother fell off a cliff when he turned 28 with is exactly what Justin will be next season. I don't think he will be as bad, he's obviously a more talented player, but there could be a drop off in production. Yeah, I don't think it is fair to compare the Upton brothers. I just think Justin is the more talented player than Melvin (B.J). QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 03:18 PM) I'm sure he will, but he's got a lot of power for a SS, and IMO has enough offense to play 3B. A 2nd rounder isn't a big deal especially since they most likely with have the supplemental. They probably won't sign him, but I do think he is a guy they probably look at pretty closely. Desmond is also pretty bad defensively at SS. He had an abysmal 1st half of the season, strikeouts a ton, and has never played 3rd in the MLB. I'd rather much go after a real 3B like Frazier (hopefully rumors are true of Sox going after him).
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 03:04 PM) I think Ian Desmond is someone the Sox look at. He can play SS next year, and if Anderson is good enough, move him to 3B. His contract could be a little depressed by his awful start this season. He's most likely to get a QO though. If I'm signing a player that has a QO attached to him, it's Heyward and maybe Upton.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 02:06 PM) with everything you posted aside, i am going to talk about this bolded part. the hawks, imp should be looking to replace the older players with younger ones. the hawks can't expect the level of performance to be elite as they get older. You worry about that later, like in 5 years as you bolded. You don't worry about that now. You do that now, they'll end up like Morin, Clendending, Stanton, Pirri, Dahlback. What do all of these players have in common? None of them could crack the lineup because there are simply better players in their positions at this very moment.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) It's not so much "questioning" as much as it is the following: Stan is not great at knowing the value of a player. Examples: He gives Bickell that ridiculous contract He turns Patrick Sharp and Stephen Johns into two really bad players He overpays Brent Seabrook He moves Saad to keep Seabrook. Seabrook is over 30 He fails to negotiate Kane and Toews separately, when Kane is a behavioral problem and Toews isn't. He's fortunate as it almost blew up in his face. He won three Stanley Cups. That's fantastic, but the fact of the matter is there are better rounded GMs. In 5 years, I'm concerned the Hawks will be old and bad. 1. Yes, Bickell contract is bad. 2. Two really bad players? Daley has looked excellent this preseason and is a lot faster than I thought. If you wanna bring up Dallas' defense from last year, they had one of the worst defenses as a unit. Daley playing with Hammer has looked great. Garbutt produced 32 points 2 years ago and 25 last year, so at 900K, plus a solid two game, he is not bad. The only thing I was upset about this deal is that it included Johns 3. You don't find many top pairing defenseman, so if you can keep them, you keep him, not to mention Duncan Keith might have the best contract in sports. 4. Saad priced himself out of the Hawks range. They got a 2nd line C for him and Saad's future replacement in Dano. 5. Both of them are the face of the franchise, they've done so much for this city in bringing hockey back and came into the league together. I have no issues with their contracts

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 01:37 PM) where as you haven't provide little into most of yours posts. really don't put yourself on the higher plain But I have? Explaining all the trades that got us young players, then that were developed and priced themselves out of the Hawks pricing range, and then developing those young players that are currently on the roster. (Teuvo, TVR, Dano eventually)

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 01:33 PM) Yeah, but for every Nick Hostetler or Marco Paddy, there's still KW or Buddy Bell to cancel all of that out. The biggest impact talent of the early bunch, Adolfo, isn't on a pace to even make a dent in the majors (assuming injuries or non-performance don't get him) before the new tv contract negotiations in 2019. They also have stayed within the parameters on intl. signings, unlike many of the big market clubs like the Cubs, Red Sox and Dodgers who have been scooping up the most talent. Finally, Courtney Hawkins and Tyler Danish sank quite a bit as prospects. That has hurt, as well. I wouldn't say Danish sank "quite a bit". Certainly took a hit, but he was the youngest player in that league at 20/21. Room to grow.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 01:32 PM) or so you say. By saying you will not respond provides nothing to the conversation lol.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 01:03 PM) you are right, and that is the point of my contention with him. it seems as the hawks will need 2 gm for the org, bowman in finding talent and drafting and another who can do the negotiation and trades. You didn't provide any insight here
-
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) Stan Bowman would be a pedestrian GM if it wasn't for drafting. It seems like he gets played over and over again by other GMs, and yet he manages to find talent. Isn't drafting and then having the coaches developing them a huge part of the job? I don't think you can say he gets played over and over again because he has had limited bargaining power because of the team so strapped to the cap. Cam Barker got us Leddy Leddy netted us Pokka who probably is the #1 D man in the system now. Sharp and Johns netted us a top 4 D man, and a top 9 winger who is physical and has enough skill to keep up. Saad got us Anisomov and Dano. Common theme, young players they developed got really good and priced themselves off the Hawks. I don't see why the Hawks can't do it now with this team.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 6, 2015 -> 09:25 AM) Good numbers as a reliever at low-A Kanny in 2015 (3.69 ERA 5 SV 75.2 IP /49 K 1.26 WHIP) But, he's a converted pitcher, 24, and hasn't even pitched in high-A ball yet. Possible AA as a 25 year old in 2016; who knows if or when he'll make the majors. He got released.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 06:56 PM) Which would make it worth it to me, as you get him cheap this year and if the team implodes again, you have a trade chip. I don't fault Frazier for his awful second half, as that Reds team was dead. Has to be demoralizing getting destroyed every game with a rookie pitcher on the mound and the dumbest manager alive. Exactly.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 06:52 PM) I'd have no problem acquiring Frazier if he wasn't going to be a FA soon. I also think the Reds have no use for an established star like Quintana, as they won't even try to compete if they get rid of Frazier and are left with Votto, Bruce and their returning injured guys. If Sox acquire Frazier, they would have control of him for 2 years. After that 1 year, I really think they would extend him. Frazier is only making 6 million next year.....

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) Just playing some devils advocate here. http://www.fueledbysports.com/2016-mlb-mock-draft/ Obviously this should be taken with a grain of salt but there's nothing wrong with getting familiar with some names now. Thanks for the find. I will get familiar with some names. In the 14 draft, I wanted Rodon, however, I did waiver back and forth between him and Kolek. But, I did want Rodon more than any of the 3. In the 15 draft, I wanted Fulmer from the very beginning when we all realized that we had pick 8, if you don't believe me go look at that thread. I do have a pretty good track record of getting our picks right, so you should all take my word As for this year, I'm going have to do some research before making the pick that the Sox will eventually make

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 06:02 PM) Norris was a top 5 catcher in terms of WAR at age of 26. I just imagine it will take more than a non top 150 prospect like Danish to get him. Other teams needing a catcher could surely offer more than that. I'd do Danish and Johnson for Norris and Jacob Nix.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 05:55 PM) I would imagine Preller would want more back for Norris given they gave up a good pitcher for him (Hahn). Who knows, maybe the Padres love Danish. Preller also overpaid for Norris because he (like us) thought he had a good club on his hands. Danish for Norris straight up I could see.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 05:22 PM) How about Montas and Micah Johnson for Derek Norris? I'm a huge Derek Norris fan. Thanks for bringing him up. Dont think we would need to send Montas for Norris. I think Beck and Johnson could get Norris.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 11:05 AM) actually i think there are some interesting hitters on the market.... but with anything, it comes down to cost.... b/c as much i was the owners to dabble in the fa market, i am also concern with the cost. meaning overpaying. You always overpay in free agency, no matter who it is.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 10:46 AM) You mean the offense that finished 26th in the MLB in runs scored? Mesoraco and Coazart were out for the year, traded Byrd, and Hamilton regressed. So their offense took a hit.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 5, 2015 -> 10:36 AM) Q for Frazier would be awful. I'm not opposed to trading for Frazier, but Q being involved doesn't make any sense. I agree. We can definitely create a package that doesn't include Q. It'll be interesting what the Reds do because they literally have 0 pitching and 0 bullpen outside of Chapman. Their offense is still solid but aging.
