QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:22 PM) "Samardzija couldn't even draw a package this good" doesn't make me feel particularly happy. Disagree with what you are implying. The A's are a rebuilding team that can wait for a guy like Nottingham to develop while Phegley is the stop gap. The Sox have stated this 3 year window, so if they are trading Jeff, they are probably looking at prospects in AA-AAA in the 22-25 age range that don't have that much more development time left, that they could just plug into their big league line up. It's just a matter if teams are willing to give that up.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:21 PM) Although Kazmir has more of an injury history, he's outperforming Samardzija this year so far. He's paid a tiny bit more, would translate to about $1 million extra in payroll during the last 2 months for Kazmir over Samardzija, but you get a guy performing better who also happens to be a lefty which is always a nice bonus. Hard to believe Samardzija could gather a much bigger return. As someone else mentioned, this was an inner division trade. If Shark goes, I think it'll be to Toronto or to an NL team where he has shown he has had much more success. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:21 PM) How many times was Nottingham mentioned on this site before today? Now all of a sudden, this A ball catcher is something the Sox really needed. It's beyond laughable. If the Sox actually made this trade today, and a couple of days later, another rental was traded for a better known prospect, the complaining would have no end. I am sorry, I am not losing my mind because the Sox didn't acquire some A ball catcher that wasn't even a top 20 Astros prospect before this season began. Maybe I should be. But why don't we wait to see what was acquired and how they turn out before deciding the White Sox blew it? And how do we even know this package was available for Samardjiza? I know that when I have created trade packages for Shark, Nottingham was a name I've had my eye on.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) I'm almost certain that is the reason. I agree with this. I have a feeling Sox wanted Santana. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) you are correct, for me i was talking about the rtn for oak. some may not see them as class A high elite prospects...... but they are everyday players. name me a team that has nothing buy elite players at all positions.... Nottingham can become elite because he plays a position that is so hard to play.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:16 PM) The only problem is how many players actually reach the ceilings that were given to them in A ball? You're exactly right. No rebuttal here, just stating a tweet that if they do reach their ceilings. I think Nottingham can, less skeptical about the pitcher.

Dan Hayes @CSNHayes 20m20 minutes ago On value of sandwich pick -- observer thinks 31-40 in 2016 may not yield an impact player but could produce an evday MLBer. Better than '15. Worth noting, definitely interesting to think about.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 01:12 PM) and that is a really nice stopgap to help an org in rebuilding. I could be confused but, how are these prospects stop gaps? Unless you're saying Kazmir is a stop gap?

Mike Ferrin @MikeFerrinSXM 5m5 minutes ago If Nottingham & Mengden reach their ceiling: Astros gave up everyday C & 4/5 starter for 2 mos. of Mid-rotation starter. Seller’s market.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:53 PM) Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick 55s55 seconds ago The #Astros also had Jeff Samardzija on their radar, but couldn't afford to wait for #WhiteSox to decide on a course of action. https://twitter.com/jcrasnick Well there's some good news(major sarcasm) Ugh, this has KW all this thinking we can be in contention.

Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 9m9 minutes ago Sources: Toronto in serious pursuit of starting pitcher. Suppose that's obvious at this point, but team pushing really hard to acquire one. Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 9m9 minutes ago One other guy whose name is everywhere: Pedro Alvarez. Said one GM: "Pirates want to get rid of him. They're offering him to everybody." Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 7m7 minutes ago While teams don't believe any deals are close with Ben Zobrist or Tyler Clippard, both will be traded in the coming days. A matter of time. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 6m6 minutes ago The starters' market quickly shifted from sellers' markets to a buyers' market. Lots of options available. Good for OAK to move now. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 2m2 minutes ago SP available: Hamels, Cueto, Leake, Samardzija, Haren, Latos, SD's 4, Gallardo, more. SP buyers: LAD, KC, TOR, CHC, maybe 1/2 others. Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 2m2 minutes ago #Padres officially are sellers. Venable, Benoit also could move, along with Kimbrel and any of SPs, with Ross perhaps least likely. Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 2m2 minutes ago JUpton could return from minor oblique strain today, but #Padres might hold him out until tomorrow to be safe. Most likely SD player to go. Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 2m2 minutes ago #Padres biggest needs: SS and CF.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:25 PM) Even when we were winning, I still said the defense and offense sucked too much and it was time to put the focus to next year (while still potentially buying). If things worked out and you end up winning, great, but I'm not not making moves when your playoff odds are below 5% and your team has sucked defensively for 2 full seasons (and now most of a 3rd season). I think we all saw that, ownership and management just didn't.

Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 1m1 minute ago The #Dodgers now have David Price atop their wish list, but #Tigers privately say a decision on Price's fate won't be made until next week.

Kiley McDaniel @kileymcd 2m2 minutes ago New A's C Jacob Nottingham having breakout year. 1 of 2 players in HOU system going from ~30th in the org preseason to top 10 now (F Martes)

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:17 PM) Real nice trade for Astros, as they got a good starter without giving up any of their top 10 guys. Kazmir's numbers are surprisingly great this season. I think once they update the prospect list, Nottingham would of been much higher on the Astros list. Kid is having a year and is only 20

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:21 PM) They wait too long. The "sellers" market became "not that much of a sellers market" pretty quickly. We will late until last day and get some reliever in AA and be like "well you don't know what the market was like!" If that's the case, you take the comp pick in the off season. That simple.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 12:15 PM) Questions: Does that 100% cover Houstons pitching needs or do they have more? How is that return? Anyone know anything? Both ranked in the Astros top 30 on mlb.com at #19 and #22. However, Nottingham is only 20 and at high A and has killed the ball this year. The pitcher is 22 at high A and averages a strikeout per inning.

To the Astros.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 11:10 AM) Heck I remember everyone was pissed on here when we looked at the return for Peavy. Good times. That trade could very well produce 3 major league players with an outside shot at all 4.

Samardzija and Alexei to the Pirates for Meadows, Garcia, Kingham, and Luplow

SoxNet: What can the White Sox get for Jeff Samardzija?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 23, 2015 -> 09:05 AM) Astros make the most sense right now. Yeah they do. I'd send Shark and Putnam for Santana, Stassi, and Moran. -
Zangari has been on fire for AZL

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 22, 2015 -> 08:07 PM) Wouldn't be surprised to see Trey in Birmingham with Alvarez playing 3B for WS. Alvarez is playing SS.
