Castro out for the year after suffering a high ankle sprain yesterday sliding into home.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Right now these guys seem like locks for next year: C: Flowers LF: Tank/Semien/Danks/Taylor/Mitchell DH: Tank/Wilkins/Taylor I agree that LF & DH are higher priorities, but improving at catcher should also be on the to-do list. Flowers may be passable by league standards, but hoping for average production out of a position should never be a goal. I'm pretty sure Hahn will be looking for an upgrade this offseason, whether he can find one at semi-reasonable price will be the true challenge. I think improving in LF and/or DH is a lot more important than upgrading the catching position. You wouldn't take Flowers hitting 240 with 10+ HRs and 50+ RBIs in the 8-9 hole in the line up. Not to mention he works well with the pitching staff. I say use our resources elsewhere.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) The question is how much of your remaining talent you are willing to give up for the right to offer him that money. Would I part with a 2nd round pick for the right to offer him that? Yes. Would I part with Tim Anderson and a large number of other talented guys? Much more difficult to do. I need some of those guys to be successful in order to afford to give contracts like the one to Stanton out. But the Sox are fairly young at every other position that taking a little depth out of the farm shouldn't harm the big club. I saw a stat on Intentional Talk that the Sox were the 5th youngest team in the league, and that was with Beckham, De Aza and Dunn on the roster. I would definitely part with depth on the farm to acquire a 24 year old super star at a position of need.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) More than you'd think. 2015 30 Los Angeles Dodgers $21,000,000 2016 31 Los Angeles Dodgers $21,500,000 2017 32 Los Angeles Dodgers $21,500,000 2018 33 Los Angeles Dodgers $21,500,000 2019 34 Los Angeles Dodgers $21,500,000 5 years, $107 million remaining. Wow. That is a lot. If Hahn were to trade for him, I'd expect some cash being sent back our way, if not, they aren't getting that big of prospect/prospects in return. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) Kemp is an outfielder in name only. He is not good out there. Better than Viciedo.

2014 Fantasy Football Thread

2nd league. 1 ppr. 12 teams. QB Cam Newton RB Doug Martin RB CJ Spiller WR Calvin Johnson WR Michael Floyd TE Julius Thomas FLEX Riley Cooper DEF 49ers K Blair Walsh Bench QB Derek Carr RB Chris Ivory RB Knowshon Moreno WR Kendall Wright WR Greg Jennings TE Eric Ebron What you guys think -
QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:27 AM) He also wouldn't fill the positional need that Kemp or someone would. He's a full-time 1B now. I guess he could DH and spell Abreu, but yeesh. Exactly. How much is left on Kemp's contract? Like 4 years correct but I'm not sure on the money. If someone could help me out there please.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) Does anyone honestly think they're going to pay Mike Stanton $200-250 million? C'mon...there's just no precedent for it, other than Albert Belle, and I think that was actually to make a point to other teams about the dangers of signing that kind of contract, which luckily had the escape clause. Yes. If they want to contend, and protect Abreu and you have a chance at trading for a soon to be 24 year old super star, you offer him 8-10 years worth 200-250 million. I'd do it without blinking. Abreu and Stanton hitting 3-4 would be the most dangerous middle of the order in the MLB.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) This is the type of scenario I am thinking of. Another name that hit me yesterday, but isn't very likely because of the rivalry is Joe Mauer. I like your scenario because based on what Hahn has said, those players make sense. I would love to get all over Kemp and stick him in left or right. Honestly, Maurer was a name I thought of too. Him making 23 million next season hitting 273 with 4 HRs scares me a ton.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) Listening to Hahn talk, we are going to look at players with big contracts, and might come here for a really cheap price in terms of a trade. Guys like Kemp and Hamilton come to mind. If it's for cheap, they take a bad contract (Danks?) back and send money over, I would gladly take Kemp or Hamilton. But my preferred choice would be Kemp. Hamilton this year (been injured for a good part and turning 34 next year) 262/330/418/748 10 HRs 44 RBIs Matt Kemp this year (Turning 30 in a month, this in a HUGE ballpark.) 281/346/475/821 17 HRs 66 RBIs 32 2Bs 48BB

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) How are you accounting for Abreu's salary? Are you pro-rating his signing bonus or did you allocate it 100% into this season? Basically, we could sign Victor Martinez for the going rate and that would be it. No replacement for Viciedo (Cabrera/Rasmus, etc.), for Flowers, and very little or nothing but more scrap heap bullpen help...perhaps ONE veteran guy the next tier down from the closers and guys like Miller, Gregerson....hopefully a better version of Belisario and Lindstrom. That wouldn't even give us the money for much of a starting pitcher, even off the top tier. Personally, I'd rather add James Shields for three years than Victor Martinez. Both are going to be huge rolls of the dice. Flowers isn't going to be replaced. I think he has earned himself another year or two. Even Hahn has said that himself that he's been happy with Flowers development and how he has been good defensively and how he has handled the pitchers this year.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) I wouldn't disagree. I'd probably give up a bit more with both of them to acquire said elite talent, but contractual status means a lot. I mean, compare Anderson/Hawkins/Danish/Montas and Eaton/Hawkins/Danish/Montas for Stanton. Which feels like you are paying way too much and which feels like a fairly solid offer? That first offer is solid. No way I trade Eaton. However, I only do that deal or any deal for that matter if Hahn can agree on an extension with Stanton before said trade.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 07:01 AM) One more point: anybody that has cleared waivers can still be traded. It just doesn't happen often because anybody traded after 8/31 is not eligible for the postseason. Correct. Didn't a trade happen last year during the playoffs? But not with playoff teams.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 06:59 AM) Noesi 7 IP, 5 K, 0 BB. Really looking like the 5th starter for next year. He has definitely earned himself a starting spot on this team next year. He has really surprised me.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 10:29 PM) Mariners will like that next year. Would they be interested in him again in the winter? Is Denorfia a free agent, and hasn't he been play well there?
-
Taylor killed that ball.
-
Viciedo quietly has 18 home runs this season....if he can hit 260 with an obp just over 300, I'd be fine with that in the 7th hole.
-
Avi got a great jump on that ball
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) Sox have a lot of guys who will be playing in the postseason to keep it interesting: Dunn, DeAza, Beckham so far. Should be interesting to see if any of 'em are heroes. The Angels seem intent on playing Beckham a lot. Dunn's going to play a ton. And I bet DeAza plays a lot. Him playing more = better prospect/prospects for us.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 07:46 PM) Although I'd like a L tonight, it's nice to see Taylor, Sanchez, and Semien providing offense. I don't mind at all if these guys play well and we win.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) An Abreu off day????? I like it. Give him 48 hours to get some rest. I'm pretty sure his hamstring is still bothering him. I went to the game Sunday, and he was still favoring it a tiny bit running towards first. Taylor and Semien also in the line up. I like it a lot.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) I'd say Jose is at his absolute peak. I won't argue with that. I just don't subscribe to the theory that you HAVE to maximize asset value, and trade him. As I said, if you can get a superstar hitter, AND you are willing to spend on another top flight RHSP, then you do the deal. Completely agree. Only way I'd move Q is to get a superstar hitter back. And the only one who MIGHT be on the market, that fits the Sox YOUNG core is Giancarlo Stanton. I think a package of Quintana, Montas, Micah Johnson, and Avi Garcia gets you in the conversation. Then sign a guy like Shields and you still have a decent rotation.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) Where is this idea that Micah will be the starting 2b in April of next year coming from? They just shut him down for health reasons rather than calling him up in September. I can't see him starting in the bigs next April barring several injuries to other people. I agree. To me, Semien and Sanchez have that ahead of Micah. The media is blowing him way out of proportion. He's a nice player, but show he can stay healthy and then make decisions from then on.
-
QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Sep 1, 2014 -> 08:08 PM) If Semien isn't with the bug league club I'm gonna be pissed. I think its a guarantee that he's gonna be up.
-
QUOTE (Timmy U @ Sep 1, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) Might mean neither Mitchell nor Danks is getting the call. Makes me wonder who is getting DeAza's ABs. Sox already have 4 OFs in Viciedo, Eaton, Garcia and Sierra. Danks and Mitchell are playing because they needed someone to play the OF lol.

Semien and Phegley not playing today, probably already in Minnesota
