QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Apr 7, 2018 -> 10:38 AM) Avilan and Castillo are nice additions but aren’t they both free agents after next season? The reason I liked the idea of signing Reed to a 4 year deal is that you’d have him thru the 2021 season. He could function as the closer this season and then when they add a proven closer like Kimbrel or Allen next offseason, he could easily slide to proven setup man over the next 3 years. Oh well. Probably need a spend a decent chunck of change on the bullpen next offseason if they have any plans of competing in 2019. Yeah I like that Reed idea too, although his stuff is on the decline But yes, Avilan and Castillo are FAs in 2020...Maybe they both play their way here longer All for Allen, Britton, Herrera, etc. though Side note: Hector Rondon who I wanted CWS to sign is off to a hot start with 5 Ks in 3 IP, no ER

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Apr 7, 2018 -> 10:11 AM) I’ll never understand the thought process that we have to wait on rebuilding the bullpen until the start of the anticipated contention window. Strong bullpens can take a few years to build. It’s why I strongly endorsed the idea of signing Addison Reed to a 4 year deal at $7MM AAV, even though the rest of the board was strongly opposed to such a signing. Why not start adding pieces now to begin addressing the team’s biggest weakness rather than reaching for 3 or 4 next offseason? Heck, the Sox would probably be 5-1 right now if they had signed Reed. After viewing this 'pen for a week I'm convinced that Hahn's goal for '18 is to show promise through the lineup and young arms like Giolito and Lopez (Who the TOR broadcast compared to Severino BTW) and ongoing prospect influx yet lose through the bullpen to get a top 10 pick again so he can maintain the Farm and keep a first rounder despite adding big time FAs this upcoming offseason. Also, feel like he's preparing the fanbase to miss out on a Harper/Machado-type and settle for a bullpen makeover. I would have liked that Reed idea but I do think Castillo and Avilan who were both added this offseason will be here when this time is a perennial powerhouse (At least at the beginning of the reign)

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 08:16 PM) I wonder if Ricky hates Saladino's game. My guess is he won't be entering many games. Ventura loved him at least He offers a lot of position versatility and solid D He won't be here much longer, surprised he still is actually

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Apr 7, 2018 -> 01:22 AM) Honestly don't remember anything about Tate Blackman, but he hit 5 HR in 49 games last year in Rookie ball. He has 2 HR in 2 games this year in A-ball. Nice progression, kid. 23 in KAN so hopefully keeps this up and reaches W/S by the summer

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 09:50 PM) Tyler Johnson? He’s in the pen. I think hes fast tracked as a reliever. As do I, believe Getz said that over the winter Throws hard and effective enough to be in the ML at some point next year Hopefully flies through KAN to W/S soon Maybe a long-term pen piece with Burdi and co.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 09:00 PM) 1) Another outfielder if Avi goes 2) Veteran 2/3 starter 3) Two elite set up guys (rather than one closer, who I believe comes internally) 4) Catcher? Depends on Collins/Zavala... If I knew the top 2-3 picks in the draft, that would help, too. I also would be looking to Japan or Korea for a bargain to throw in the mix. Why? They'd hit below .200 for Charlotee Have a feeling Avi stays May not be room for a starter with Kopech, Giolito, Lopez up and developing with Hansen, Dunning, Cease, etc. knocking at the door and Rodon already there I agree that two set up guys are better than a single closer and the Sox do have some guys with great 'pen potential...starting with Fulmer but I think he sticks in the rotation Catcher is gonna be crowded with Castillo's option likely picked up, Narvaez there, Smith still hanging on (for now at least), and both Collins and Zavala knocking at the door Coillins likely better profiles at 1B but obviously Abreu is there (And Davidson)

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 08:42 PM) Personally, I think they give it until midseason 2019 to play out...unless they can get some absolute bargains next offseason. There are too many wild cards right now. Jones. Burdi’s health. The law of averages says that at least one if not two of Fulmer, Lopez, Cease and Dunning will wind up down there. Not having to pay an elite closer $15 million (again) would be a huge boost. Hopefully Avilan, Bummer, Cedeno can hold down the fort from the LH side...not particularly interested in overpaying for Andrew Miller one season early. I agree on Miller and forgot about Avilan (hopefully does well)...Cedeno is a scrap piece but Bummer has '18 to prove himself as well

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2018 -> 08:34 PM) I'm not squeamish about the money next year. IMO that was the point of the rebuild. So I'll be the first to say in this thread that this is the piece I want. Kimbrel. Best there is probabaly ChiSox have all the money in the world to burn and only a major need in the bullpen (Although I'd want Machado, but Anderson and Yolmer continue to rake) I know I DON"T want Josh Donaldson...off topic

Off topic but imagine this season is do or die for Michalczewski, Hawkins, Barnum, and Alvarez

Have a feeling our Sox are gonna pump a lot of money into the bullpen next year considering where they stand with a great lineup, wide open payroll, and s*** bullpen. Great year to do so with a FA class containing Allen, Brach, Familia, Herrera, Holland, Kimbrel, Ramos, Miller, Britton, and Doolittle. So what's the pen like on OD and who do we want in FA? I'll realistically take a 'pen with Allen, Herrera, and Britton as newcoming FAs to join Jones, with Vieira, Burr, and Burdi later Also whoever of Adams, Guerrero, Stephens, Fulmer, Danish, Covey can't start

QUOTE (mac9001 @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 11:53 PM) Promising start by McClure, but if his fastball sits in the upper 80s I don't see how that holds up over time. Thought it was low-mid 90's

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 10:16 PM) Nice start for Rutherford Hopefully continues Awesome to see Basabe have a good game after a solid Spring, have a feeling he'll be in the Top 100 conversation by next season Feel like Booker deserves to be viewed as of more of a prospect and should play every day...really tough to in that OF though

QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 09:30 PM) Good day for hitters in AA and A+, Dunning makes the decision to put him at W-S look silly, McClure's numbers at Kanny look promising, hopefully he keeps it up. Great to see in April, maybe moves quickly but this system is loaded

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 5, 2018 -> 08:56 PM) Covey deserves an ataboy. Maybe he can replace Infante and join the ML team this month

What;s up with Olson and Davis on the DL? TJS?

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Apr 4, 2018 -> 01:28 PM) I just wanted to add to the conversation here... that I live in Charleston and had the opportunity to see a lot of Rutherford playing with the Riverdogs. The Ryan Sweeney comps aren't off. There isn't anything he does that stands out. He was just "good" at about everything. Saw a lot of pitches, hit for a decent average. Hit some homers and got some extrabase hits. Ran the bases well. Took decent routes and hit the cutoff man. Didn't make a lot of mistakes. But there's nothing about him that screams out "All-Star" or franchise cornerstone. He was a hyped prospect mostly because of where he was selected and less about what he can do on a field. My guess is the Sox asked for a lot from the Yankees in that deal but because of the financials involved were probably given a list of 8 guys the Yankees would include and were told "pick 3". Wonder who the 8 were

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 12:35 PM) Actually very intrigued by this kid, have to watch more of him Seems to be more a slugger and less of a 5 tooler than Harper Turns out he's a HS freshman, wow 2021 First Overall Pick

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 11:42 AM) I think similar takes, although Sweeney seems to be a bit more polished. Sweeney got strong. He went from skinny guy to pretty jacked but it didn't mean much home run wise. He had a decent career. I think Rutherford is a notch below him, but similar profile. I was gonna call you sweet and post Sweeney's miserable stats but he actually consistently had a solid average Little did I know, solid bench option

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 11:24 AM) Thats very aggressive with Robert missing two full months...probably AA at end of he year, then AFL. Sounds more probable but I'm not ruling anything out

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Apr 3, 2018 -> 11:37 AM) Baserunners to start extra innings is the worst thing I've heard in a long time. Settling it with a game of dice in one of the dugouts would be preferable to that garbage. If it ain't broke don't fix it These ideas suck
