They're similar in the sense that the goal is financial prudence but getting 6.85 years of Robert in our competitive window is between than 6 years in our competitive window and 2 months when we're going nowhere. Not wanting to guarantee a player $30M in 9-10 years when they're 36-37 is a more complex argument. Navigating the bargaining agreement to ensure you deploy one of your elite prospects as best as possible is a no brainer for a rebuilding team.

Tired of seeing Yolmer Sanchez in starting lineup
raBBit replied to SweatyFreddy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
These aren't the other options though. It's not like people are clamoring for Ryan Goins to get Yolmer's PAs. Is it worth it to see what Mendick can do? I don't know but at the least it's more worthwhile than Yolmer. I definitely have the indication that the club doesn't view Mendick as highly as the fans may though. -
We'll see what happens in the offseason but all the bats hanging around for the long term (in addition to Abreu) are right handed. Almost makes me feel like they should put Moncada 3rd for his left handed bat. By end of the next year... R 2B Madrigal R CF Robert S 3B Moncada R DH Abreu R LF Eloy R 1B Vaughn

Tired of seeing Yolmer Sanchez in starting lineup
raBBit replied to SweatyFreddy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Jose Abreu and I have been on this train since March. Yolmer is a nice infielder and a switch hitter with meager results. To me, he screams 23rd guy on an NL team. He's beloved in the clubhouse and apparently by the front office but I'll repeat it for the 100th time - what value does Yolmer Sanchez provide to our next playoff team? There is no scenario where this guy gets trade value. Let's see what Mendick can do. Anyone but Yolmer. -
The rumors were (partially) true: Collins to AAA
raBBit replied to Jose Abreu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Yeah I mean they didn't prioritize him getting looks whatsoever and picked up a guy off the waiver wire that further diminished Collins' argument to play. The weird thing is everyone just kind of looks at Collins objectively and doesnt look at him as a catcher while I think the team's argument would be that Collins got valuable experience working alongside McCann. At this point, Collins isn't going to be a featured part of the rebuild. If the Sox can turn him into a 3rd catcher/part time DH/part time 1B who hits dingers and takes walks playing 25-40% of that's a nice bench piece on a team full of right handed hitters. I have my doubts but it'd be a piece albeit an unconventional one. Renteria (perhaps by direction of the FO, idk) didn't give Collins a fair shot to hit and get comfortable at the plate. That said, what he did show in his short stint is that he has holes in his swing that pitchers didn't really need much of a book on to attack and exploit with great success. -
These are just totally different scenarios.

The rumors were (partially) true: Collins to AAA
raBBit replied to Jose Abreu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The way they deployed Collins was puzzling but once they picked up Reed and had Castillo rehabbing the writing was on the wall. I kind of get the feeling the Sox are trying to turn Collins into some sort of role player they can use in a flexible way. -
Harvin Mendoza dinger. I wouldn't mind Mendoza getting a shot in Kanny to end the year once Vaughn is moved up. He has both hit and got better in every year with the org.

If the Sox are going to call up Robert in 2019 they should do it ASAP. Otherwise, see him April 18th or whatever the date ends up being.

This. If Sanchez was signed and comes right to the states he might get 25-35% of the $2.5M. So while everyone is quick to say that's not that big of a signing, he's not worthy of the Robert treatment, etc. this is a HUGE deal for Yolbert. If this is the diffrence between him getting $750k and $1M that's 33% increase on his take home pay. For a guy who will hit an un-guaranteed shot at free agency at 30-31 at the earliest I definitely respect the Sox for allowing him to keep some money. Would he benefit from < 2 months in A Ball? Yes I think so. Is it a huge deal? No. EDIT: This is all said under the assumption that Sanchez is in the DSL for tax reasons is in fact true.

Why would you select sell if you can select sell for value?
-
If he's an All Star next year as well he'll probably get a really nice deal on the free market and the Sox would regret not locking him in. That is the risk you take by not extending him. Maybe something like 3/45 IF he follows up next year the same way (assuming he settles at like .275-.290 or so) I don't know. That said, I just don't really expect the market to value McCann and I don't expect McCann's performance to continue at this pace. When Avi had a .400 BABIP leading up to the trade deadline of 2017 the Sox couldn't get anything offered in return for him. He was an All Star and hit .330 that season. No one wanted him during it down the stretch or after the season was done. Of course, McCann is a more well-rounded player and plays a more desired position than Avi but the whole league knew what happened with Garcia and they'll have the same type of argument with McCann. Garcia had a 1,551 PA track record of being middling-bad (92 OPS+) and in 2017 he led baseball in BABIP by 21 points with a .392 BABIP. He hit .236 the next season. McCann had a 1,658 PA track record of being just bad (76 OPS+) and in 2019 he doesn't currently qualify but he has a BABIP of .408 which is 16 points higher than the qualified leader (Yoan Moncada, .392). I think McCann is a smart player, good teammate and surprisingly more athletic than I remember with Detroit. I think it's pretty clear that he's made improvements to his approach at the plate and he has stopped hitting pop ups and really started using the whole field to hit.

He said 7-10 days or something about two weeks ago. I'd imagine that is the case.

That's an interesting point and you may be right. I wonder if that's the thinking behind the height of it.

The one thing that's kind of annoying (and I am going off what I've been told, not what I've seen so could be off) is that the net reportedly goes up roughly 3/4 of the foul pole. I am fine with the extended nets but does it have to be so high? Balls hitting the top of this net aren't going to be of the dangerous variety. I am nitpicking and I get the risk-reward here and how it is a no-brainer, but I am just hoping it's not messing with sight lines going over the top with the protection.

A) I agree 100%. B) DA just casually dropped that Flowers posted a 5-WAR season and I fact checked him and to my utter disbelief Tyler Flowers amassed 5.7 WAR in 99 games in 2017. Good god.

McCann has been outstanding, has made changes to his game and seems to be a great guy/pitcher's catcher. That said it makes no sense to sign him to an extension because: 1) You'd be signing him at the top of his market. 2) He has a .408 BABIP. 3) You have him under control for another year when he can prove his changes are lasting. The counter argument being if he keeps playing this way, through this year and next, you will have to pay him more than you would with an extension now. That's true and that's a worthwhile risk in my opinion.

They started the installation before yesterday. They went public with it yesterday. I think the Sox didn't like the Nationals stealing their headline.
-
It's not quite a coin flip, but I think there's a good chance Vaughn is in Chicago this time next year.
-
Yup. I've been of that opinion for weeks. He's set up to fail in Charlotte.

Jack you obviously are no dummy, have you considered working in roles that are more autonomous? I think you said you did uber but there are uber-like jobs out there that carry more weight on your resume. If you're struggling to communicate with your superiors, maybe a role where you are your own boss and set your own goals is something that could be beneficial to you. I know Amazon has some interesting opportunities as they take over the world. The nature of the roles they offer, the perceived value of their brand and the "self-directed" "autonomous" experience you will have will enable you to leverage the role in future job interviews if you do end up wanting to switch back to a more traditional role. It seems like your folks are very supportive of you and you to stay with them rent free, I would hit the ground running with a job that rewards volume and build up a nice base of savings so when you're ready to get back to a more traditional/ideal role for you, you have a nice fallback. I don't want to speak out of turn with regards to your autism that you've been open about in the past, but have you ever tried to look at yourself sans the autistic label? Obviously you're not the real Jack Parkman, but for sake of my point, I feel you look at yourself as autistic Jack. I don't know how you go about disclosing it with work in the past, but you are you. When you're walking down the street or meeting someone for the first time they do not look at you as Autistic Jack. And while I don't mean to imply it's simple for your to just ignore who you are and why you are you, but maybe bringing a different approach will help. It doesn't seem that you're happy with the results you've been getting so maybe try something different. I am sure it's not easy to do that but just a though. If I bumped into you on the street you would just be Jack. You're not autistic Jack until you share that detail with everyone else. In any case, I wish you the best in your efforts to find the right career.

The M's & A's opening in Japan altered the typical service time dates. We are past the Super 2 deadline. There is no financial/service time incentive to keep Cease in the minors unless they plan to do so until the end of next April. Any fan complaining about the Sox being cheap with regards to Cease is a fan that has opinions you should not listen to.

A) No one cares what the fanbase thinks B) Theo should be fired if they dont extend the option. If they're done with Quintana, the move is to trade him, not let him walk for free.

He isn't striking anyone out anymore. I wonder what he is working on. This guy is interesting. Lose 20 pounds, learn how to catch and be three years younger. He's got an arm. Check the passed balls though. Yeah seriously. Robert and Madrigal rollthrough and all of a sudden Rutherford, Gonzalez and Sheets wake from their naps. Wasn't he a rule 5 pick in December '17? I guess I am not totally sure how the minor league phase works but they held him all throughout last year. What stipulation are you speaking to here?

That's what I've heard from others but I guess I don't know for sure.
