  1. Hahn was hired by JR after multiple letters and interviews and possibly (not sure) a relationship with Hahn's father who is/was a Chicagoland lawyer like JR. Reinsdorf told him he wouldn't let him waste his education and rejected to interview him. He said if Hahn was still crazy enough to waste his time trying to get into baseball, he would put Hahn with a scout to be mentored and learn. Hahn took the offer. Then Reinsdorf's friend Dennis Gilbert who helped the front office with negotiations left the team and the team had a need for negotiator and Hahn was hired. Hahn was listed as the top GM prospect in Sports Illustrated. The reason Hahn was made GM in 2012 wasn't simply because JR didn't lose him but that was part of it. The Sox had already had Hahn working in GM capacity during 2011. What changed the game, was Ricketts buying the Cubs and creating an additional level of the baseball hierarchy in order to bring in Epstein to the North Side. Reinsdorf saw what Ricketts did and copied it. The two Chicago teams were the first to employ this method of retaining executive talent in baseball operations. Now at least a dozen teams in the league have the same structure (if not more).
  2. I'm more speaking to the idea with the undrestanding that someone with the Sox told Nightengale they were doing it. If the Sox bring back Kimbrel, I would imagine they have an indication they could move him and make the team better. I understand both sides of it, but seems like somebody told Bob they intend to bring him and given his accuracy with the Sox specifically, I am going to trust him until he's wrong again (like with other teams).
  3. I think the Sox keep keep Kimbrel. There are a lot of options to trade him to a contender and swap (relatively) similar money contracts and work out the rest from a value standpoint. Rays - Kiermaier Phillies - Gregorius Mets* - Cano, Carrasco, Walker Reds* - Gray, Moustakas Dodgers* - Price, Bellinger Padres - Snell *Pair with Keuchel
  4. To be fair to Balta, this wouldn't be a bad plan for the Rays if the Sox and Rays were the only team in the league.

    2021 Catch-All

It's not in Chicago. It's in Cook County. Crime in Cook County suburbs is way up. The vast majority of the people committing the crimes are from Chicago. They leave the city, rob a store in a nice suburban area, return back to the city and ditch the stolen car.

    Are you always trolling?
  7. In actuality, it is the owners' job to choose the commissioner.
  8. I'll agree to live in reality you can agree to do whatever you want but you're off on this. Tigers traded for Barnhart.

    2021 Catch-All

Right. We had some discussion on that the other week but too many people were trashing admin orthodoxy so it was removed. Ulta needs to have security or barriers to deter these criminals in areas where the local government makes a concerted effort to leave the citizenry at risk. Enough is enough.

    2021 Catch-All

The Ulta by my house has been robbed 3 times. 3 times in the last 7 days. A group of 2-4 people come in with bags and slide all the fragrance in their bags and drive off in a stolen car that is then abandoned on the West/Southwest side of the city. This is basically it every time. Ulta is a retail giant - truly one of the jewels of a rough sector. They're not protecting their customer or employees. What gives?
  11. What are you talking about? "Sports franchises aren't supposed to be legitimate businesses" - says who? In what world are you living in where the best businesspeople in the world are supposed to be happy taking a loss? You don't seem to have any understanding of what you're talking about.
  12. Right that's why I was confused about you talking about gold toilets, plumbers, etc. Choosing 2011 as the year is entirely arbitrary and you chose that year because you can make your desired argument. For instance, I could make a case for the other side using your arbitrary process. 2018 White Sox Payroll: $71.2M vs 2021 $128.7M, an 81% increase. Perhaps you don't get a chance to go to many games in Chicago, but tell me have tickets, parking, beers, food, cable bills increased 81% the past few years? ------- "Whereas the owners are getting billions from taxpayers in terms of subsidies, have substantial expense write-offs which minimize any taxes, defer capital gain taxes for decades, own teams in perpetuity without any free market interference courtesy of their Congressionally awarded monopoly. The same owners who paid millions to bribe Congress to avoid paying minor league players a minimum wage." 1 - Which "substantial expense write-offs" are you referring to? And what does that have to do with the CBA and/or a potential stoppage? Seems like you have a gripe with the tax code which there is plenty to take exception to but not sure it is relevant. 2 - What do you mean by "defer capital gain taxes for decades"? Also, how do you know that these private entities are deferring capital gains when their financials are not public? 3 - What? 4 - I think you're talking about the "Saving America's Past Time" Bill or whatever it was. Minor league pay has been a very serious issue. That said, that bill is from several years ago. Since then, the MLB has raised the pay by ~50% and pledged to offer housing to minor leaguers. It is a start in the right direction but still more is needed. Frankly, I am not sure how minor leaguers aren't protected by fair labor/minimum wage practices. However, in the context of this thread, when do people start to call upon the MLBPA to support minor leaguers? The MLBPA regularly bargains away the rights of non-union members (non-40 man MiLB players, amateurs with futures, etc.) to serve the interest of their union members. The MLBPA should take in the minor leaguers. Or the minor leaguers should make their own union like the affiliate leagues in the NBA or NHL have.
  13. Sox will have the best odds in baseball at winning their division when the odds come out in 2022. They're definitely in a poor spot.
  14. Isn't this supposed to be about baseball?
  15. Cold and rain in Atlanta tonight. Game may be in jeopardy.

  17. Definitely seemed personal. Madrigal is not an "old school" kid for lack of better words. He didn't take to instruction and didn't feel like he needed to change his game. The old school people in the org were always divided on him.
  18. Stone's comments on Madrigal were downright disrespectful. Basically picked his whole game apart. Trashed him on the way out like someone on a reality show would trash their ex. I don't know why Stone found that necessary but I remember being shocked how candid and rude he was.

  20. Bulls need an interior defender. Not sure how they would handle an Embiid or Julius Randle in a playoff series. Past that, we need some 3 point shooting. You have to give Colby White a shot when he comes back to hopefully take the next step forward but if he's not the guy both him and Williams need to be dangled. You would think one of those guys + Derrick Jones get traded midseason.
  21. Never said anything to the contrary of this.
  22. For sure. I don't believe the fake vax card conspiracy.
  23. He's vaxxed so he could be back by Sunday no?
  24. The vast majority of the Bears are vaccinated and they are going into week 3 of an outbreak with new cases coming out.
