  1. I think expecting to turn Gio into a player that can meaningfully contribute to the 2023 roster is optimistic. Gio should have some surplus value, but no one is handing you a young controllable MLB bat with upside for 1 year of Giolito slightly at maybe 75% of market value. Think like the Sox acquiring Lynn for Dunning. That's the type of deal we'd be looking at talent-wise, best case scenario (someone controllable perhaps, but with limited upside or other warts). I don't think that makes the Sox any better for 2023. Not to mention, it actually increases payroll slightly, and makes the rotation worse with less upside.
  2. Because Cueto pulled a rabbit out of his hat and hadn't been that good in a half decade. And he's 37 next season.
  3. That seems terribly subjective. I think there is a very good chance that 32 year old Clevinger can be as good as 36 year old Cueto. Their xFIPs were only 0.38 different in 2022. Clevinger has better stuff. I love Cueto. He was awesome for the Sox and super fun to watch. But he was highly unlikely to duplicate that success. He hadn't been that productive (or healthy) since 2016. The Sox got lucky with Johnny.
  4. I think this is it for MLB pitching, honestly. There is legitimately no more room. The rotation is full and the pen is full. I would love to see Hahn sign several SPs to milb deals though to improve the upper minors pitching depth. I don't have any names off hand, but the Sox have to be a pretty attractive landing spot for guys that wants to have a path to another chance in the bigs, and be a part of a team that has a good chance to compete.
  5. Lynn was pretty darn good after his first handful of starts. Far better than a 5th SP.
  6. Yeah. The clubhouse cancer stuff is a big yawn for me. So he didn’t quarantine properly on a road trip? Who cares. Clevinger is a really solid pitcher. Thrilled to have him for $8M.
  7. No one is giving Cueto a 2-3 year deal. He’ll prob get a deal similar to Clevinger. Sox just bet on the guy that is half a decade younger and has more upside.
  8. Probably Sean Burke and Jonathan Stiever are 7 and 8. But Hahn needs to sign a couple milb guys that aren’t complete trash for that AAA rotation.
  9. You can get a comp pick for him. So taking “something” for him makes little sense when he is very needed. Also, 1/$8M for Clevinger is a home run. Awesome signing. Very happy with our rotation.
  10. This. Sox really need to build a rotation in Charlotte of guys that are at least not barf worthy spot starters. Hahn has really sucked at that.
  11. Sooooo like….what’s the hold up? This is very un White Sox like. Usually when things leak they happen quickly or don’t happen at all.
  12. Definitely little league fences but I’d be hard pressed to not be happy about Clevinger + Conforto at this point. Much better than last offseason.
  13. This. It’s just not that complicated. Some people around here need to watch more teams besides the Sox if you think Gio is a problem or overpaid at $10M.
  14. $10M is “big money” now? And Giolito isn’t remotely close to a non tender at that salary level.
  15. While I don’t agree with the thought process, signing Clevinger and trading Gio still leaves us without a 5th SP and best case scenario is a wash salary wise, likely a slight increase in payroll.
  16. Gio is going to be more like $10M. Highly likely Q will cost more AAV and certainly years. 1/$10M is not a huge bargain for 2022 version of Gio, but it certainly is for 19-21 version. If Gio were a FA this offseason, even coming off a poor season, he’d be getting paid. I don’t think a 5/$90M type deal would be out of range. Unless another team absolutely has to have Gio for 2023 and is willing to pay handsomely, I just don’t understand how the Sox get better trading him, and there is almost no scenario short of acquiring a younger SP in exchange that helps solve the Sox budgetary issues. Just keep Gio, enjoy him having a very nice season in his walk year, and let someone else give him the Wheeler deal next winter.
  17. And watch him turn into one of the best RH SP in the league? Nah, I'll pass. If you're gonna trade him, at least let him blow up first and move him after 2023.
  18. A good way to leave yourself with 1 SP in 2024. Trading Kopech right now would be nuts.
  19. JFC, Sox better be getting an awesome return on Gio if they actually move him. It is such an assbackward strategy.
  20. Ehhh. He’s not going to be nearly as cheap and is 37 next season. Johnny was a joy to watch but expecting that performance again would be crazy. I have no issues with Sox looking in a different direction.
