White Sox bring Mike Clevinger back, pending physical
ChiSox59 replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Would have cost teams $6.65M for like 8-10 starts with very little guarantee he was healthy at that time, but he likes to ignore that fact. -

No. Can we send his ass to the moon yet?

Well, to be fair - it’s also hard to understand your mentality of spending a good chunk of each day on this message board attempting to convince all other Sox fans that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. -

It’s not like we can even dream on a franchise altering pick either… -

Sure, they could have sent $ to make a deal happen. I am sure they (at JRs direction) were focused on cutting payroll. Not really asking you to buy anything, but you can’t just ignore the fact that the $4M buyout had Clevenger paid more like a $20M player for August and September, which obviously he isn’t. -

You can’t just ignore the $4M buyout tho. No one wanted Clev last year because of that, and he had 1 start since coming off the IL at the deadline. I bet if he produces about the same as last year and this is like 1/$4-5M deal, he’ll be moved in July for some fringe prospect that needs to be added to the 40 man, a AAAA type or a live arm. Not exciting, but something and he eats some innings in the meantime. -

Curious to see how much money Clev cost himself opting out. Always said he should have taken that deal… While I don’t have the hate for Clev that some do, I do think this is a solid move. Based on the fact no one really wanted him, don’t see this as a move that could really return much, but it will eat innings. If nothing else, hopefully it stops them from rushing Nastrini into the big leagues and wasting a year of control. I am sure Clev has been working out and hopefully they can just slot him right into the rotation in a week or so. -
Chris Getz basically said as much on Pierzynskis podcast last week. AJ asked about innings limits for Crochet and I believe Getz response was “we are going to exhaust Garrett as a starter, and then we’ll see where we’re at”. Sure sounds like they plan to start him until mid-late summer and then either shut down or pen him. Such a stupid plan, but hey, can’t say I’m surprised.
-
Well I think Shaw is gone Wednesday for Nastrini anyway. So that slot is a little bit of a placeholder. I’d still have kept Cousins in AAA as he’d almost certainly be used in the bigs st some point. and I doubt the cash considerations are much. But oh well.
-
Feel like he would have been useful before too long.
-
They literally just signed Pillar to a $1M MLB deal a couple days ago. Almost zero chance he is the first to go.

I hope the Sox can bring you much joy this summer, and that things go well with your treatment. Prayers up.

Poll: Predict Final Win Total for the 2024 Chicago White
ChiSox59 replied to South Side Hit Men's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I guessed 62-70. I actually think this team will be decent and hang between 5-8 games below .500 for the early part of the season, until the inevitable sell off of anything they can in July, which drops them from ~75 win pace to mid-to-high 60s. -
I mean, he was welcome to sign elsewhere for more money. There's a reason he didn't.
-
I haven't seen it confirmed, no. I am assuming something between $770k league min to $1M though. Sportrac doesn't have it yet.
-
Strange. Getz probably just didn't want to say "listen dude, we're not paying you $3M. It has to be the MLB min. So I am going to release you, and then if you're interested at MLB min, lmk,"
-
I agree that service time for non-elite prospects shouldn't be a huge concern. I am not too worried about Nastrini service time one way or the other. But we're talking about like 3 starts in a rookie season versus potentially 32 starts when Nastrini could be a very good major league pitcher. When your team is projected to lose 100 games, losing little bits of value around the margins doesn't make a lot of sense to me, personally. But I am not all up in arms about it either.
-
Huh? Why would service time matter at all if you're intending to lock a player up long term? That comment makes no sense. Service time is an issue for any player that projects to be useful to be honest. Even moreso if the player projects to be a star, though some of the new rules do change that calculus a bit.
-
While I don't necessarily agree that Nastrini hasn't "earned it" this spring, this is precisely why I hated moving Kopech to the pen right now. They should have given him half a dozen starts and see what happens, and if he sucked, then move him to the pen. They could still throw Woodford or Kuhl to the wolves for a few weeks, I guess. The Sox haven't formally announced anything yet.
-
I think it is what Autumn said. Shaw makes the roster as the extra reliever until Nastrini is needed. You can DFA him in a week or two when Nastrini starts, and Shaw very likely clears and accept an assignment to Charlotte and you don't lose any depth. If you do that with the other experienced NRIs (Knebel, Cousins, Leone, Barlow, Anderson, Woodford, Kuhl, Keller), the risk of them rejecting the assignment is probably much higher, so you're actually losing depth going that route. I would actually do exactly as the Sox are here, I think it is the right move (assuming Nastrini doesn't make OD roster).

The Twins went 8-18 and are dinged up already after an offseason featuring Carlos Santana as their premium signing. This division could be historically poor.

I am not suggesting he is a great player. I am suggesting there is no reason to be upset about literally paying $2M+ less to retain Pillar than they had to a few days ago. Chances are Pillar wont be around all that long, and if he is, he is a suitable 4th/5th OF. It’s just a big nothingburger.
