Lambert, Drohan, Martin should all be 60 day IL candidates. Somehow Sammy Peralta is still on the 40 man. I would guess those are the four most likely to be removed from the 40 man for the NRIs that make the club. Assuming Getz isn’t going to DFA players he signed or acquired this offseason, Popeye might be next on the list.

Sox saved at least $2.2M in the process. Smart move tbh as paying Pillar $3M to maybe last a month or two on the roster would be pretty gross.
-
For good reason. Haven’t you been going on and on for weeks about the Sox giving Pillar $3M? Now they release him and that’s an issue too?
-
There is no reason to move Colas right now. He could literally spend the next 2 seasons in Charlotte before the Sox HAVE to make a decision on him in ST 2026. He’s an extremely talented guy - let’s see what happens before just cutting him loose or trading him for pennies on the dollar. There are all sorts of personalities across baseball. To say Colas shouldn’t be allowed in the Charlotte clubhouse is pretty over the top imo.
-
I am guessing it’s the price tag they’re avoiding. $3M for Pillar to last a 3-6 weeks on the roster is fairly spendy for a terrible team .
-
Then they walk in a few weeks? What’s the big deal? I’m not really defending the Sox here, but minor league deals are just that. Gonna have to make some 40 man space next few days for whoever makes, but that shouldn’t be an insurmountable task. At the end of the day, the Sox offer one of, if not the, quickest path to an MLB roster. Most of these guys will probably agree to stay in Charlotte.

These guys would be nuts to opt out. They aren't getting a better chance to crack an MLB club.
-
Yes. Phillies removed him from the rotation.

Garrett Crochet named Opening Day starter

Touki? One of the shitty NRI SPs like Kuhl or Woodford? Not really sure it matters much. -

Id much rather see this experiment happen in the minors. Not only do you gain a year of a control for a season that might actually matter, you also protect yourself from losing a ton of it if he hurts himself again. So what happens in July in the off chance that he hasn’t hurt himself? Shut him down? Move him back to the pen? Not the route I’d have taken, but all you can do is hope for the best. -
Did Getz ever have a presser on this deal that is available anywhere? Haven’t been able to find it.

Sox speaking about bringing back Clevinger
ChiSox59 replied to PolishPrince34's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If he’s cheap enough, teams will do silly things for cheap pitching at the deadline. Sub $5M, I’d have no issue brining Clev back. -
I have not. I don't put much stock into spring training results. But regardless, who cares? The Sox need a miracle to be anything better than awful. Who cares if he sucks in the rotation, and then you move him to the pen in May or June or July? I realize something clicking for Kopech as a SP might be nearing miracle stages as well, but if it does, he's a valuable trade chip. Much more valuable than if things click as a pensman. I realize he's had all sorts of chances, etc., etc., but there's a reason for that. He has an arm you can dream on, even if it has regressed some. He's also shown flashes of being a really good SP. It just feels like an unnecessary move at this time for a team that is projected to lose 100 games. I also don't like the trickle down effect it could cause putting Nastrini or Thorpe in the OD rotation, or forcing Crochet into it. Gimme the extra year of control on all three of those dudes - all that makes is about 5-6 Kopech starts.
-
Definitely a 'Sox gonna Sox' situation.
-
Duvall just signed for the same $3M as Pillar too. Woof. Now I am sure he'd rather play for the Braves than the Sox, but even the minor moves just don't look good at all. Willing to let this thing play out a bit before jumping to major conclusions, but its just ugly.
-
This. Run him about there for half a dozen starts and see what happens. IF he gets shelled, then move him to the pen. The other side effect here is putting a guy like Nastrini or Thorpe or even Crochet (if he continues to get stretched out in the minors) in the OD rotation when you gain an extra year for letting Kopech take a few turns. Its stupid.
-
I knew Clevinger was going to regret turning down his side of the option.
-
I don't understand this decision. You can always move him to the pen later. This is a move you probably are not coming back from, and Kopech has way more value as a SP both to the Sox, and to other teams.

I agree. I felt like Kepler would rake playing 80 games at the Cell. But I looked him his career ballpark splits and while he's hit 11 homers in our park (2nd most non-home park after CLE), his slash line of .192/.291/.385 is really ugly. But I still feel like he could be a solid shorter term fit, and he's a pretty good defender, though is slowing down in his 30s.

Sox have $122.35M 2024 payroll including the following: All guaranteed contracts $8M dead money to Garcia, Hendriks and Abreu Pillar ($3M) & Mendick (MLB min) making the roster If Mous makes it, it'll be ~$123.5M.
