I actually think a lot can change.

He really only has 2 months as an elite hitter - his time with the cubs. His defensive metrics also "improved" with the cubs. I am skeptical on the defense moreso than the offense.

If he goes out and has a 950 ops with adequate defense he's looking at a big payday that could contend with what JD Martinez got. It's a gamble, but it certainly could pay off if the big long term commitments arent there this off season.

I suppose.  He could also regress back to the ~110 wRC+ player he always was, and coupled with his dogshit defense, put himself in a pretty terrible situation moving forward.

I don't think Castellanos is taking a 1 year deal unless that is his only option.

Castellanos could benefit huge from a 1 year pillow deal.

What really changes for him though?  He's still a terrible defensive OF, 1 year older, takes the risk of having a down year with the bat, and enters a FA pool with more OF's in 2021.  Don't really see how any of that benefits him.

I'm surprised (but not really) at this "the sky is falling" mentality whenever a reliever signs elsewhere. Did we not see these same exact complaints during/shortly after the winter meetings with regards to starting pitchers?

To be fair, the FA options are getting slim.

But honestly, I am fine with just rolling with some combo of Burdi,Fulmer, Hamilton, Ruiz, Foster, Thompson and whatever NRI guys they bring in for the last two spots.  I feel like Burdi and Hamilton, at the very least, will be in the bigs most of the season.  And Fulmer is out of options so I could see them giving him one last shot.

who cares about Price?  He'd basically just be another 5th starter.  The prize is getting Mookie's 6 WAR for essentially a one time fee of about 20 million.  I remain convinced that Boston is looking to dump both of them in a package deal.

Lol the White Sox aren't going to have a 2020 payroll of $190M.

You know you want Castellanos :)

I think it’s a terrible fit as I’ve stated many times, but if his market has cratered I won’t complain. If they can get him on like 3/$45M deal it would be fun for 2020, but I just hope they plan to trade him next offseason if it’s more than a 1 year deal. But I cannot imagine a 1 year deal being possibility worth discussing.

That said, I don’t think the Sox acquired Mazara to not play and I don’t think they’ll give Castellanos the 4 years and close to $70M it will require to be a platoon player. And I don’t think they signed EE to do anything less than DH as much as he’s able. It’s the ultimate example of forcing a fit.

Three weeks til Sox Fest and six weeks until Spring Training.  Time to get the last pieces in place.  Maybe there will be some bargains available soon.  Puig is a good possibility as is Sanchez.

I am going to be kinda disappointed if Sox sign Puig. Just let Mazara do his thing. With Robert up day one, Leury gets less reps - let him get the platoon oops. Sign a 2B like Brad Miller, Brock Holt or Zobrist and go to battle.

I think some sort of trade might be up. They still haven't announced EE, and that would require a roster move, so maybe they are waiting a little bit on a trade that will open up a spot instead of DFA someone

Has EE been back to the US since his fathers funeral?

Who’s the backup SS when Madrigal is promoted? Leury Garcia? I’m assuming Mendick to start the year but will both Mendick and Madrigal be on the big league roster? Worth noting that TA has missed an average of 21 games per season over the last 3 years.

    Definitely Leury at the moment.

I do think they’ll sign someone who can cover SS. Brad Miller maybe?

I would think that giving McCann all of the starts vs. lefties, wouldn't be more than the normal load for the 2ND catcher. How many starts to you expect Grandal to get, behind the plate? He started 110 games, as catcher in 2018 and 124 behind the plate, last year.

I think he'll get 130 starts at catcher now that EE is in the fold.  McCann is not going to start against every LHP.

  10. 20 minutes ago, Lillian said:

McCann should certainly get all of the starts vs. LH pitching. His splits were terrific vs. lefties and Grandal is just average when batting right handed.

Huh?  Grandal's career splits are fairly even. Grandal has a career .362 OBP against LHP.  McCann is going to get some starts against LHP which he hits well, but they definitely aren't going to sit our prized new catcher against all LHP as you just suggested.

  11. I would, but it would need to be insanely team friendly.

Something like the Kingery deal.  6 years $23M with three team options.

    2020: $750k

    2021: $1.25M

    2022: $2M

    2023: $4M

    2024: $6M

    2025: $8M

    2026 team option: $10M ($1M buyout)

    2027 team option: $11M ($1M buyout)

    2028 team option: $12M ($1M buyout)

    I would do that.

Unless he puts up an enormous 2019 season likely starting in AA I think it would be tough for him to crack top 100 prospect lists. He does not field per scouting reports all that well, but his arm is plenty good for an outfield corner. That places tons of pressure on his bat to play though.

So far injuries have help him back from breaking out, but there certainly is remaining potential there. There's development to be further tapped into, lets hope he can prove that

Its a bit of a hot take, I admit that.  But Micker has as much as upside as anyone.  Just a few years ago Micker was #2 behind Eloy and ahead of Gleyber Torres and Rafael Devers as the top international prospects in the 2013 class.  Injuries have killed him.  But Adolfo has the body type you can dream on, and if he can stay healthy, I like his chances of dominating the minors this year and getting back to being a top end prospect.  He just turned 23, so it has to happen quick for sure.  I believe with his injuries the Sox got another option year so I think he still has 2020 and 2021 to figure it out before they have to make a real decision on him.

Like I said, I have high hopes if he can stay healthy.

    It is interesting.

I also wanna see Micker finally get his chance to prove some health in MiLB. Even with injuries he comes right back and still hits when he's actually out there.

I have high hopes for Micker this season.  I think he'll be a top 30 type prospect a year form now IF (and a big if) he can stay healthy in 2020.

If McCann hits well this year, he will see a significant amount of time at C/1B/DH. It will ultimately be up to him.

Will he though? With EE in the fold, Grandal is going to catch 130+ games.  Abreu and EE cover 1B and DH and will play most days.  Eloy will get some time at DH.  Abreu, EE and Eloy all murder LHP, which makes it even tougher to get McCann at bats against LHP.

There really isn't an avenue for him to get a "significant amount of playing time" barring an injury to Grandal.  And none of this even considers Collins, who I would imagine is going to start in AAA, but if an injury to EE or Abreu occurred, I feel like Collins would take a lot of those at bats before McCann would.

I am all for keeping McCann around because he's cheap, he's good insurance and I don't think he has much if any trade value.  But he's not going to play much if Grandal, EE and Abreu are healthy.

  15. McCann is just a year removed from getting non-tendered from one of the worst teams in the game.  I am sure he's disappointed he's not going to the starting catcher (I mean, who wouldn't be?), but I don't think he's going to be a clubhouse problem.  Doesn't seem like that type of guy.  Its a bummer of a situation from for him personally, but he doesn't strike me as the type of guy that is going to make it an issue.
