  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 01:58 PM) It is a stretch to call this a "crunch". There aren't a whole of players who are really going to harm us if they aren't the 40 man roster. I get some players have to be added, but there is plenty of room to carve off chaff. A good chunk of that bullpen is going to be erased, for good reason. Do you see Danny Farquar holding down a roster spot? Anyone really worried about a team claiming Tyler Danish? Greg Infante? I'd put money on Putnam being a non-tender with his injury and arb standing. There are also a few position players would will be carved off of the roster as well. I am going to bet that one of Hanson or Peterson isn't on the 40 man come winter. Alfredo Gonzalez is Spanish for unemployed come December. The OF is probably also one OF heavier than it needs to be, especially if Avi comes back next year. I laughed.
  2. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 01:31 PM) Larry on SSS did a good break down and there will be a crunch. https://www.southsidesox.com/2017/8/18/1615...coming-whitesox Yah, I've read it. I still don't think there will be a crunch. The Sox 40 man roster will be at 35 after the season and removal of impending FAs. Then the Sox have their pick of whomever they want to cut from the last list of bullets in Larry's article - my guess is Alfredo Gonzalez, Jacob May, Alen Hanson, Greg Infante, Petricka are all removed from the 40 man. That gets you down to 29. Cordell is already on the 40 man and included in my numbers. Add Liriano, Gillaspie, Peter, Fry, Guerrero, and Jimenez and you still have 5 spots left on the 40 to play with. Some dudes are going to get cut from the 40 man, but the Sox aren't going to be cutting legitimate assets to make room on the 40, and that is what I consider to be a true 40 man crunch.
  3. Leave Fulmer alone for now. Can move him to the pen in 2019 if next year is another failure. I like Peter as a poor man's Zobrist. I see no problem giving him OF reps. Hawkins is whatever to me. Bullpen, OF, release. Don't really care. Don't see the harm in giving him a shot on the mound first.
  4. Obviously a lot of time between now and the 2018 draft, but it sorta sucks that it appears the top 3 talents are all pitchers (Singer, McClanahan and Mize). We need a generational offensive talent with this pick. Makes me a little less concerned about getting the #1 pick (top 3 is nearly inevitable). I'd rather see some serious progress from the young guys on the roster lead to a few more wins.
  5. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) Some of these guys like Willy, Saladino, Hanson, Smith won't survive a 40 man pair down. I'd be pretty surprised if one of the four isn't DFA. Otherwise, that lineup looks good just replace Davidson with The bessssssssss in July. There really isn't going to be a 40 man roster crunch. All of those guys sans Hanson should be safe (assuming Willy has an option left). The Sox are going to have around ten 40 man spots to play with between FA, Rule 5 additions (both internal and external) and any trade acquisitions. And Avi and Abreu are really the only guys on the roster that are tradeable that would bring back assets that would need to be protected.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 03:32 PM) It's impossible for me to believe Engel has been not good in CF. He seems to have been covering for subpar players to his left and right and gotten everything hit over his head. All it proves to me is that defensive metrics still aren't all that great, because Engel is the real deal in CF.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 03:22 PM) small sample size but Engel is not lighting up the defensive metrics. Leury grades out as much better The eye test tells me he is quite good. I am shocked the defensive metrics don't agree.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) They need to really see if they can turn Demonico into a LF if they think his bat is for real. He needs to be playing in the field regularly while the games don't matter to know if he can when they do. Agreed, I want to see him out there in LF at least 3 times a week with maybe 1 game at 1B, 1 at 3B, and 1/2 at DH. No point in not getting him reps in the field at this juncture.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 01:50 PM) I want to see Engel in CF daily for the same idea, but the opposite reason. He is one hell of a defensive CF. He is almost has to be the best one in the organization. Now we have to see if he can hit. Engel should be in CF next year unless we somehow find a better option with mix of defense and hit tool. He can't hit much, but he is an elite defender. If Engel can become just a .240/.320/.390 guy, that is plenty valuable with his defense in CF until something better comes along.
  10. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) Near 100%. If he has a nice ST he'll probably break camp in AAA Getz has already stated that Jimenez and Collins will start next year in Birmingham.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 01:39 PM) There is plenty of that. 40 man roster is at 39, including Cordell who should be on it, but not reflected on mlb.com as on it, and the 60 day DLs. FA: Soto, Pelfrey, Gonzalez, Holland (reduces to 35) No brainer cut: Alfredo Gonzalez (reduces to 34) Other DFA candidates: Jacob May, DJ Peterson, Alen Hanson, Jake Petricka (non tender), Greg Infante, Danny Farquhar, and Chris Beck. Even if just 4 of those are removed from 40 man, roster goes down to 30. There will be plenty of room. I'd be super curious to see a list of guys on the 40 man that will be out of options next year. That would help clarify some things. Davidson, Leury, Liriano (not on 40 man), Hanson, Ynoa (not on 40 man), Farquhar and Yolmer are currently out of options. But my guess is list will at least double next season.
  12. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) Yeah pretty good bait to cut if 40-man space is need in off-season. There is plenty of that.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) From that timeline September 1st makes a lot of sense. Yah, otherwise Hanson is probably the odd man out. Which I am OK with, he kind of sucks. I don't see him making the team next year and he is out of options.
  14. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 03:44 PM) Based on...? Scouting reports. The fact that he has played more 1B and 2B than 3B this season. He is at BEST a MLB average 3B, and that is if he improves a ton. He is most likely a 1B/DH/RF types that can fill in at 2B and 3B if needed.
  15. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 03:00 PM) Why is he not a major league 3B? He isn't good at it.
  16. He's not a major league 3B, but I wouldn't hate getting my hands on him. I suggested a Montas - McMahon swap a couple offseasons ago. Obviously that idea has passed, but perhaps do the same type of deal. Rockies will always be looking for pitching, and we have a good deal of minor league pitching.
  17. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 19, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) As of now, I'd predict it to look like this: 1. Leury Garcia CF 2. Yoan Moncada 2B 3. Jose Abreu 1B 4. Casey Gillaspie DH 5. Matt Davidson 3B 6. Nick Delmonico LF 7. Ryan Cordell RF 8. Kevan Smith C 9. Tim Anderson SS Rotation: 1. Carlos Rodon LHP 2. James Shields RHP 3. Lucas Giolito RHP 4. Reynaldo Lopez RHP 5. Veteran Free Agent Bullpen: Nate Jones RHP Zach Putnam RHP Free Agent Free Agent Aaron Bummer LHP 2 more spots I think you can probably pencil Danish, Goldberg and Minaya into the pen. I suppose they could start in AAA, but each will definitely get their share of time in the pen next year.
  18. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 03:34 PM) Are you serious? Finding warts on his game? Hitting just .276? Striking out too much? As an 18 yr old. In A ball. He should be a high school senior for crying out loud. Even with the influx of talent in the farm, right now if the Sox still had Tatis, he would be the best player on Kanny, as an 18 year old. Ce la vie. Lol..I have him plenty of credit in my post. What he has done is very impressive. Just not quite ready to crown him the next Manny Machado quite yet. Is that ok with you?
  19. Pretty shocked he cleared waivers, but I guess that gives Hahn more flexibility.
  20. QUOTE (yesterday333 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:28 PM) So is the cash all we are getting back or is there still a ptbnl? its not very clear if that is the return or just part of the return. I don't think anyone know for sure, but probably safe to assume Astros took on $1M of the ~1.2M remains on Clippards deal and that's it. No PTBNL.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 11:57 AM) I wish some poster would make a thread that tracks how all of our former players are doing. I watched Robertson get a save last night. I haven't heard much about any of the former Sox now on other teams. It would be cool to have day to day updates on each of them. lol, why? Who cares.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Giolito has 39 days of service as of today. When you add in a couple of weeks to pass the service time deadline that would put him at need to join the Sox roster sometime around the 3rd week of May for the extra year of control. I just don't see that happening. Get him up here September 1st or whenever the next starter is dumped. Two months in AAA for Giolito isn't inconceivable if the Sox signed two guys like Santiago/Bucholz/Estrada/Chatwood as flip candidates to fill out the rotation, but I totally understand your logic.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) If you plan on having him up next year, his service time doesn't matter anymore. I don't plan on him breaking camp with the team. I would go with a rotation of: 1) Rodon 2) Lopez 3) 1 year deal FA 4) 1 year deal FA 5) Shields Make Giolito, Fulmer, Stephens and Guerrero earn a promotion in AAA, and have a couple guys that are flip candidates in the rotation. All that said, if the Sox plan on having Giolito be on the opening day roster next season, then I can't argue them bringing him up for a few starts this year as it will make no difference. I am not THAT passionate about it one way or another, and Gio has been quite good over his past several starts. I just hate wasting service time on our precious assets in what we know is going to be a another awful team in 2018, but it is inevitable. I'd honestly prefer to see fringe guys like Stephens or Guerrero get an opening day rotation spot. Again...just an opinion.
  24. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Aug 16, 2017 -> 08:06 PM) Tough crowd. This is a guy who had to change his mechanics at the beginning of the season. I just don't see the point in calling him up this year. Save the service time and let him earn a spot next season.
  25. $1M...that's it? Yawn. I figured the Astros claimed Clippard, in which case the Sox would have gotten more to just let him go (he was still due ~1.2M). Hopefully there is still a PTBNL.
