  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 27, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) There are going to be a lot of players who come and go this year. I imagine there will be steady shuffling between Charlotte and Chicago (and maybe even Birmingham) as well as waiver additions. The best example I have is Casey Blake in 2003. Dude was a 30 year old AAAA player who got at bats with Cleveland and turned into an average to above average starter for 8 years. Maybe it's a little concerning that a 30 year old finally found his power stroke during the PED era, but it's worthy nonetheless. That's why I don't mind the idea of hanging onto a guy like Bourjos or Asche (though he'll begin the year in the minors). If Bourjos is healthy and still up to par (or close to) defensively, and can hit at all, he's arguably a 2-3 WAR player. Who makes it instead of Asche? Only one I could see is Liriano to not risk losing him on waivers.
  2. Guys, it is really simple. The dudes with options are going to get optioned. The dudes without options are going to make the team. This is a punt year for the Sox and they may as well give Davidson, Leury, Sanchez and Ynoa a shot rather than giving them away. It really comes down to the last man on the squad and whether they go with Asche or Liriano for the last spot. With Tilson starting on the DL, and most likely Rodon as well, here is my guess: 1B: Jose Abreu 2B: Tyler Saladino 3B: Todd Frazier SS: Tim Anderson C: Omar Narvaez CF: Peter Bourjos LF: Melky Cabrera RF: Avisail Garcia DH: Matt Davidson Bench: INF/OF Leury Garcia, INF Yolmer Sanchez, C Geovany Soto, INF/OF Cody Asche SP 1. Jose Quintana 2. James Shields 3. Miguel Gonzalez 4. Derek Holland 5. Dylan Covey Bullpen: RHP David Robertson, RHP Nate Jones, RHP Zach Putnam, RHP Jacob Petricka, RHP Michael Ynoa, LHP Dan Jennings, LHP Corey Luebke Jacob May, Nick Delmonico, Danny Hayes, and Liriano (if he clear waivers) will be the first wave of players to come up when Asche is inevitably DFA'd, 25 man guys hit the DL or are traded. Each of them (sans maybe Liriano) will ML at bats with the Sox this year.
  3. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 12:08 AM) http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/zeise-i...version=pgevoke Pittsburgh writer suggests Quintana for Glasnow, Keller, & Bell. Would you guys take that deal if offered or wait for something better? I'm torn here because it's obviously a ton of talent, but I hate that the one positional prospect we'd be getting is more of a 1B/DH type. I like this deal more than most of the Astros deals thrown around here, but man, WE NEED BATS!
  4. Delmonico is going to get a look this year. But Davidsons is gonna come first!
  5. Good read. Makes me a bit worried that he's not quite mature enough to handle it all, but that comes with the territory. Can't wait watch him everyday.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) The last time they went total rebuild, it took 3 tanking seasons although they projected 4. They wanted the team to be in place for the new park, but 1990 happened. And they didn't miss on their 1st round picks who were all on the team by August of 1990, and their trades were pretty stellar. They also didn't trade their main chips, Dotson, Bannister, DeLeon until after the 1987 season, when they dumped all 3, and didn't trade Harold for a year and a half after that. They kept Fisk and Ozzie, and Calderon. What happened then has zero bearing on what happens now.
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 11:38 AM) I disagree. I think 2019 is the year that could be the first of the competitive years. They should have Giolito, Lopez, Fulmer and Burdi in the minors in 2017. In 2018 they should all be ready to be at the MLB level. By 2019 they should all be ready to contribute a successful season. They will also have Rodon and possibly Q. This will create an outstanding pitching staff at a very cheap level. Moncada will be ready by then. They will then build more offense in FA which are more reasonable contracts than pitching. Will they definitely win in 2019? No, but that will be the first competitive year. This is pretty much how I feel. The Sox are also incredibly due for some good fortune on the offensive side. Maybe Saladino figures it out this year and becomes our 3B for the next 5 years. Maybe a guy like Liriano or May or Engel become MLB regulars. I am more bullish on Collins than SS2K (shocker). I think he is one the best sticks at C in the league by 2019. Hopefully he continues to develop behind the plate. Plus the infusion of talent we get from Q, Jones, Frazier and Robertson, and the periphery guys like Gonzo, Jennings, Melky, Petricka. I expect Hahn to focus on bats moving forward. Where we sit right now, its hard to see how this team can be competitive in 2019, but there is a lot more to be done, and I expect the Sox FO to continue to focus on MLB ready or near MLB ready prospects. Plus, our payroll will be peanuts and we'll be able to play in FA. Again, I see no scenario where the Sox don't try to be competitive in 2019, unless basically everything we acquired this winter flames out.
  8. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 07:10 PM) take 13 pitchers and put Leury as the backup SS. That's a good way to max losses. If Anderson needs a day, Saladino will shift to SS and Sanchez or Leury to 2B.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) Three seasons as in 2019? No way. Not a chance. There isn't enough talent here yet for that. 2020 is when the window opens IMO. If Matain takes 5 or even 6 seasons to get here, that puts him right smack in the middle of things in 2021 or 22. He won't be on the front end, but he would be right in the middle of the revival, if it works. I see no possible way this team punts the next 3 seasons.
  10. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) Wishful thinking No organization is going to send (5) top 15 organizational prospects in exchange for 1 player This has been talked about to death over the winter End of the day a potential deal will look like: 2 top 5 organizational prospects (that are top 50 overall talents) plus one or two more B level prospects to round out the deal Probably, but I guess Tucker and especially Martes don't get me all that excited. I want depth if we deal with the Stros.
  11. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 03:48 PM) "Martes and Tucker and after that I would love: One of: Franklin Perez Ramon Laureano Garrett Stubbs One of: Daz Cameron Jason Martin Miguelangel Sierra" Martes + Tucker + Perez/Laureano/Stubbs + Cameron/Martin/Sierra would be a very compelling offer that I would find hard to pass up I do not see Houston being willing to offer up 4 top 12 organizational prospects though Then no soup for you. Martes and Tucker are musts. Then two of Fischer, Reed, Perez, Whitley and Stubbs. I would personally be OK with no Martes, but I'd want something like Tucker, Fischer, Reed, Stubbs and Perez in that case.
  12. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 02:45 PM) Martes and Tucker and after that I would love: One of: Franklin Perez Ramon Laureano Garrett Stubbs One of: Daz Cameron Jason Martin Miguelangel Sierra I'd be underwhelmed.
  13. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 12:03 PM) Honestly I'd rather see Nicky Delmonico make it over Davidson. May as well give Davidson a shot. Delmonico has options, and he'll likely get a shot at some point. We'll likely lose Davidson if he does not break camp with the Sox, and while that may not be a huge loss, they may as well give him a look. Nothing to lose, something to gain. Delmonico will still be there.
  14. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) More moves, Engel & Kahnle to Charlotte, Fry and Pena to minor league camp 37 remain in camp, 17 pitchers, 3 Cs, 11 IFs, 6 OFs link I thought I read Kahnle was out of options. Guess not - but I wasn't too concerned about losing him anyhow..
  15. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) Is there any evidence out there that says throwing 3 lefties in a row matters at all? Or is it just one of those weird baseball things that people think matters? It is really just about giving batters a different look.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 22, 2017 -> 08:15 AM) That doesn't really matter in a tank year. I can assure you that Renteria and the boys will be trying to win baseball games.
  17. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Mar 21, 2017 -> 03:54 PM) Peter Gammons @pgammo now White Sox scout asked by another scout why he was at Astros-Marlins game. "always a guy named Quintana, he laughed. Yes, 'Stros still trying Try harder, Stros.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2017 -> 03:14 PM) The one player that is interesting to see if he is changing minds is Lopez. Could he win a job? Doubt it. They'll want the extra year with a full rotation already. He has more service time than Giolito, so he may actually spend a little more time in Charlotte.
  19. I like the deal. There is going to be some downside risk in the last guaranteed year or two, but the upside far outweighs the downside. The thing that worries me about these types of deals, and even moreso with a guy like Anderson who hasn't even accrued a full year of service time, is what it does to them mentally. Anderson now knows how much money he is going to make the next 6 years of his life, no matter how well or poor he performs on the field. It is certainly conceivable that some players may lose some their drive to become the best player they can be, since they're making the same amount of money no matter what happens. Hahn has a pretty great track record with these types of extensions, and obviously the Sox know Tim Anderson far better than anyone posting here, so I trust that they think Timmy will be determined no matter what. But it is always something to consider. It is only human nature to work harder when you know there is significant benefits in doing so.
  20. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Based on all the other crazy cheap deals Hahn has gotten young players to sign.... 8 yrs/$60M? Seriously tho, you kinda have to take it out last 6 years for it to make sense.
  21. Why bother at this stage? edit: that said, I trust Hahn at these types of things.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 04:10 PM) Nope. Why would I? I always want the Sox to win the games I go to. I could be mistaken, I haven't paid a ton of attention to Soxtalk the past couple months as I have been fully immersed in CBB, but I thought you were one of the big tank guys.
  23. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) Can't wait to be there Opening Day. Q vs. Verlander baby. Should be a lot of fun. Are you going to be rooting for the Tigers?
  24. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) Leury can also be a backup OF. If Leury comes even remotely close to his AAA batting line, he'd be a backup like Saladino, but with CF ability. Sanchez, I just don't see it at this point. His only hope of sticking is Frazier getting moved and Saladino becoming the full-time 3B. And even then, he just becomes the inevitable victim when Moncada come up. In any event, may as well give Sanchez one last chance to prove he is ML worthy. Nothing to lose.
  25. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) What's the point of carrying both Leury and Yolmer? Aren't they redundant? Is it just because both are out of options? Yes. Neither have anything left to prove at AAA. The Sox are likely to be terrible, so may as well give them as much PT as possible to see if we have anything before moving on. Not like service time is a concern with those 2. Put up or shut up time.
