  1. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 01:12 PM) At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I hate hate hate the prospect of Giolito being a large part of any return. As the Fangraphs article stated, he was downright awful in the big leagues and had issues getting strikeouts in the high minors too. Well, I mean, if they're getting Q and Eaton, I definitely want Giolito involved. There would be at minimum 6-7 players coming back to the Sox. I doubt they'll trade Turner, so you clean out their system.
  2. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 01:08 PM) Would have to have either Turner or their entire farm system right? Not sure how this deal is possible without Turner, Giolito and Robles. Otherwise I want Ross, Giolito, Robles, Lopez and my pick of 5-6 other prospects.
  3. QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 01:07 PM) George Ofman ‏@georgeofman 4m4 minutes ago Sox and Nats talking Quintana/Eaton package. Let's we where this goes. Not sure how this deal is possible without Turner, Giolito and Robles. Otherwise I want Ross, Giolito, Robles, Lopez and my pick of 5-6 other prospects.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:49 AM) Crazy thing is how the SS have such great hit tools vs. OF that are a lot more raw hit tools now. Basically if you are athletic people are pushing you to SS. I bet it used to be CF. I think it is moreso that so many of these guys have been the best player on their team their entire life. Generally, if you're RH, and you're the best player on your team, you're at SS if you're not on the mound. So most guys have SS backgrounds, and then generally get moved off of it as they go to college and then the pros.
  5. How about we go with a group of scrubs for this season? Shields, Avi, Liriano, and Gonzales would be cute.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:30 AM) Each raise sucks up surplus value, and reduces the return on any potential deal. We're talking minimal raises here, and plus, the value of the minimal raises is probably absorbed by the fact that any acquiring team could non-tender Jose if he were to suffer a horrific injury. It's basically a one year deal a $12M, with two options between $12-16M. That is pretty valuable in today's landscape, IMO. His defense would have to be a concern for an NL team, though, I must admit.
  7. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:28 AM) I don't know if it's wise, but reports are that they signed him largely to play 1B. As of now. They could easily move Blackmon or Dahl for pitching. Dahl, Tapia and Murphy would be a real nice foundation for a Q and Robertson deal. They also would still have interest in Frazier and Abreu under this scenario.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:09 AM) And he still has the specter of a huge arbitration raise looming. You keep saying this. Jose isn't going to get some giant raise this year. It is likely he will make roughly $12M, which is a very modest raise on what he made last season. Sure, if he comes out and has a monster 2017, that may go to $15M or so the following year, but 2 years of control of a masher at ~$15-16M AAV is not crazy. You're putting way too much emphasis on this, IMO.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:49 AM) Please pass on this one Mr. Hahn. It's going to be ugly enough at Guaranteed Rate Field next summer. Don't make me watch Derek Holland pitch. Meh, I actually think it would be a decent pick up. Especially if Q is gone.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:50 AM) Honestly signing Ianetta / Suzuki or Avila to go along with Narvaez is probably what we are going to get right now Unless we can swing a trade for a close to mlb ready catching prospect Suzuki is a bad idea. He is a horrible defensive catcher. We need real catchers to help what is likely to be a very young staff.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 10:01 AM) Dude definitely is no stranger to working out. No kidding....you lift, brah?
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:52 AM) They might be able to compete with just Hererra, but man, Hererra + Davis if they both are moderately healthy gets them back to the kind of bullpen that could carry them. They would need Soler to be raring to go, healthy, and step in right away for this to work. It seems like the opposite of the direction I'd be taking. I don't disagree at all, but that seems to be their thought process.
  13. QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:44 AM) No matter how this turns out this is an immaculate ROI on a minor league free agent. We rag on the front office, mostly justifiably, but this definitely is a huge one in the win column by creating immense value out of thin air. Yah, there's more than just Q. Sale would have been a FA right now if the Sox didn't stick their neck out and extend him when they did. Now they have the best prospect in baseball and one of the best RH pitching prospects in the game because of it. We will perhaps have something similar to say about Eaton and his package if he is moved. RH has made some mistakes during his time, but he's also made some great moves that most around here don't give him credit for.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:43 AM) I just wish Avila could stay healthy. He'd be a great tutor Narvaez and then hopefully you get him in a coaching role eventually. I am all for that if we are unable to nab a decent ML catcher in a deal. Avila, while horrifically frustrating to watch at the plate, is a decent player. Just can't expect more than 60 or so games from him. Problem is, Sox literally have no one behind Narvaez.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 08:29 AM) So to ask here now that there's a thread... WTF are the Royals doing? Does this make them better next year? not to my eyes. They were a freak injury and a terrible season from Hosmer last year away from being a solid playoff team again. Practically 1/2 of their world series contributors hit free agency after this year. Fine, they have salary constraints, but if there is ever a time to go for it for a franchise, it's where the Royals are now. Are they going to trade Moustakas, Cain, Hosmer, Duffy, Escobar, and Dyson all now? Go find someone who can give up a 1b/DH type who won't cost a ton because he's a free agent soon, take your best shot at adding 1 more arm to your rotation, and on paper you've got a team that rivals Cleveland. You're rebuilding in 2018 no matter what you do, go win another trophy first. They say they think they can compete with Hererra as the closer. I don't think they'll trade their impending FAs like Mous, Cain, Hosmer, Escobar. They may sell high on Duffy. They must really love Soler. I don't get the deal, seems like a great one for the Cubs. I've never been a big Soler guy, but there is definitely potential there. Injury concerns with Davis must be real.

I say Wellington Castillo, or just bring back Avila. Let Narvaez get good playing time. I do think the Sox will probably acquire a ML ready catcher in one of these deals though. Tom Murphy from the Rox or Pedro Severino from the Nats are two to keep an eye on.
  17. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 09:27 AM) whitesoxdave ‏@barstoolWSD 20s20 seconds ago Disclaimer I have no idea what this means but f*** it let's get weird What a weird dude.
  18. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 08:53 AM) Yeah, good point. There's potential for Q, Abreu, Frazier and Robertson to be gone if the rumors circulating are true. I don't expect all of them to be dealt today but it's crazy to think about. Have to think the Angels are interested in Lawrie for 2B as well. Cliff Pennington is at the top of their depth chart.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 10:18 PM) Why are Marlins so intent on a closer? Ya know, to save the 65 games they may win next year.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 07:59 PM) IMO, they should be doing anything and everything they can to keep Collins at catcher as long as possible. They still need someone else there this year though. Absolutely they should.
  23. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 06:53 PM) Frazier for Tapia, McMahon, and Almonte? Would be beyond thrilled w just the first 2. Doubt we can get that.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 06:50 PM) That would have been a fair ask...if his 2016 had matched his 2015. Since you can say right now that he appears to be trending down, you have all sorts of other questions that knock that ask a bit down. 50-80 with someone 80-120 would make more sense to me. Depending on who they are I'd be fine with something like that.
  25. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 6, 2016 -> 06:45 PM) True, but the flip side is that if he performs, arb is going to be friendly to him. I don't think he's undervalued or over valued I think he's properly valued by most. He's a solid starter on a decent contract the return should probably be a B+ prospect and a lotto ticket. If you consider B+ a top 25 guy I agree. Otherwise I want a top 50, someone in back end or just outside top 100, and a lottery ticket Coop likes.
