  1. Personally, I'd love to see the Sox add a legit bat (a Braun or Cargo type), but the one's out there aren't going to be cheap. It may make more sense to get a complementary piece for the OF. A LH bat would be preferred. A guy like Peralta does make a fair amount of sense to platoon with Jackson when he returns, and let Morneau have DH. An upgrade at catcher certainly wouldn't hurt, but I just don't see it happening. I do see the Sox adding a couple relievers in the next 30 days, perhaps one of the high leverage variety. Ziegler or Salas would be interesting rentals. What do you guys think?
  2. Instead of threads clamoring that the Sox should sell or rebuild, how about we talk about possible targets to bolster this club for the 2nd half. The trade deadline is less than a month away, and with the Sox now 3 games over .500 and only 2 GB in the Wild Card - let's be real, the Sox aren't selling barring an extremely rough couple weeks. Here are some guys that could be targets (some discussed at length here, others not). I will add to this list as other names are mentioned / become available. Bats Outfielders: Jay Bruce - $12.5M in 2016; $13M team option for 2017 w/ $1M buyout Ryan Braun - $20M per in 2016-18; $19M in 2019, $17M in 2020, $15M mutual option w/ $4M buyout in 2021 Carlos Gonzalez - $17M in 2016; $20M in 2017 Charlie Blackmon - $3.5M in 2016; arb eligible 2017-18 Alejando De Aza - $5.75M in 2016 Nick Markakis - $11M per in 2016-18 David Peralta - $530k in 2016; pre-arb in 2017; arb eligible 2018-2020 Catchers: Jonathon Lucroy - $4M in 2016; $5.25M team option for 2017 Derek Norris - $2.925M in 2016; arb eligible in 2017-18 Aj Pierzynksi - $3M in 2016 Wellington Castillo - $3.7M in 2016; arb eligible in 2017 Gary Sanchez - Pre-arb Utility / DH: Logan Morrison - $4.2M in 2016 Eduardo Nunez - $1.475M in 2016; arb eligible in 2017 Danny Valencia - $3.15M in 2016; final arb year in 2017 Steve Pearce - $4.75M in 2016 Relievers Arodys Vizcaino - $900k in 2016; arb eligible through 2019 Fernando Abad - $1.25M in 2016 Jeremy Jeffress - $520k in 2016; arb eligible through 2019 Huston Street - $8M in 2016; $9M in 2017; $10M in 2018 w/ $1M buyout Fernando Salas - $2.4M in 2016 Ryan Madson - $6.66M in 2016; $7.6M in 2017-18 Brad Ziegler - $5.5M in 2016 Tyler Clippard - $6.1M per in 2016-17 Neftali Feliz - $3.9M in 2016 Jake McGee - $4.8M in 2016; arb eligible in 2017 Starters Less likely here, but... Jeremy Hellickson - $7M in 2016 Jake Odorizzi - $520k in 2016; arb eligible 2017-2019 Ervin Santana - $13.5M in 2016; $13.5M 2017-2018; $14M team option w/ $1M buyout for 2019

    Rick Hahn

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 5, 2016 -> 09:31 AM) Thank you. Robertson should definitely be added to the veterans group. Jones to the core. If the Sox wanted to trade him, they'd cash in. Duke and Jennings are also worth their contracts and wouldn't be free in a trade.
  4. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 4, 2016 -> 10:28 PM) Jackson also most likely won't be there next year so getting a controllable guy like Peralta is something Hahn has to take into consideration. Just depends on if he can play CF good enough to stick there since I have no idea. If he can he helps out this year and next in many different ways. 1. Adds LH pop to the lineup this year and beyond when we lose Jackson and Morneau. 2. Allows Eaton and Melky to stay in their ideal positions. 3. Helps the bench by adding Jackson to it as a PH , PR, defensive replacement and platoon partner against left handers 4. Should cost less to obtain thus perserving more minor league depth than Reddick, Beltran, Bruce, Braun , Gardner and Myers I am down w David Peralta but he's going to be much more expensive than you seem the think.
  5. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) As much as I wanted to trade Quintana to Boston for JBJ in the offseason there's no way that Boston takes that deal. I think that ship has sailed I'd be disappointed w that trade.
  6. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) Rather see Saladino at 3rd and Frazier DHing. Improves D and doesn't hurt O. Also risk, although slight, of losing DH spot. Frazier is good at 3B.
  7. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) I've spent the past few days rebuilding them in my head and on MLB the Show. I traded everyone expect Rodon, Eaton, Anderson. You can only do three player deals in this game so obviously I'd want more for Sale but getting a young impact bat and 2 of their top pitching prospects is a good start. Obviously this team would take its lumps but the future would be very bright. Sale, Jones to LAD for Joc Pederson, Jose De Leon and Grant Holmes Quintana, Robertson to BOS for O; Jackie Bradley Jr, 2B Yoan Moncada and OF Andrew Benintendi Abreu to STL P Alex Reyes, P Luke Weaver and C Carson Kelly Frazier to NYM 1B Dominic Smith and P Marcos Molina Melky Cabrera to TEX for SS/3B Josh Morgan and P Ariel Jurado Didn't trade Lawrie. Kept him because he's still young and playing well for us. Just want to see how everyone on here would do there's (I realize it's not actually happening but I'm doing this for curiosity and entertainment). Package for Sale is way too light.
  8. QUOTE (beautox @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 10:14 PM) If Anderson keeps it up I would love to see the Sox lock him up sometime before the start of '18. They have control of him for a long time. No need to lock him up yet.
  9. Sox acquired Brady Shoemaker the other day. A familiar name. I used to be a fan of his early in his minor league career. Between him and Campana, Sox adding minor league OFs.
  10. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 1, 2016 -> 10:22 AM) Winning three series in a row is nice, but a nice 7-8 game winning streak would actually make things interesting again. Last year a 7 game winning streak forced the front office to stand pat at the deadline-- which of course was immediately followed by a disastrous 2nd half. A very poor call by the Hahn/KW duo. This year it seems like Hahn/KW are in desperate mode-- so another 7 to 8 game winning streak will likely cause the front office to add a bat. They're probably going to add a bat either way, unless the Sox go 6+ games under .500 the next few weeks.
  11. Wonder where LDF has been. Hopes he's doing Ok.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 05:30 PM) Bourjos has had a much better MLB career though, mostly with the Angels and Cards. Campana's barely had a cup of coffee. I'm aware. Hence why I knew it wasn't him - just knew they were similar players and he name was escaping me.
  13. I was trying to think of htis guy the other day and I couldn't remember his name. For some reason kept thinking Peter Bourjos, but i knew that wasn't right. Just the other skinny fast guy who plays CF.
  14. QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 12:46 PM) Davidson getting thrown right into the fire. I have a strong feeling that he takes Milone deep this afternoon. Also, Purke needs to be DFA'd. Dude is a bum with underwhelming stuff and no ability to locate his pitches. No reason to DFA a guy you can option.

    Rick Hahn

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 01:14 AM) Congrats to Rick Hahn for providing Robin Ventura one of the worst bullpens (minus the back end of Jones and Robertson) in recent Sox memory...at least back to 2007. 2014, if you want to go there...but nothing was expected of that team, at all. That's what happens when you lose 2 mainstays in the pen to injury, plus another guy who was supposed to contribute. Hard to recover from that without making trades or getting lucky.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 01:33 AM) OK get rid of Lawrie and it'll be Davidson at third, Anderson at short, Saladino at second and Frazier DH. That's a start. Saladino and Davidson and Anderson have a fighting chance. Duuuude. Figure it out.
  17. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jun 29, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) The Sox have a nice easy patch in their schedule coming up but I think they should seriously be navigating the trade market as sellers and getting a feel of the trade value of guys like Robertson, Melky and even Quintana, who I would only move if I'm getting an elite prospect back in any package. If the Sox are smart and take their lumps for two seasons they can really improve the trajectory of the franchise for the better. But would Jerry want to do that? No chance the Sox sell unless they drop over 6-7 games below .500 in the next several weeks leading up to the deadline.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2016 -> 01:18 PM) Abreu did not count towards the international signing limits due to service time already incurred in Cuba, that is correct. Alexei was signed before those were implemented, but the same thing probably would have happened to him. If Viciedo had been signed for that contract after the CBA that instituted the international limits, his contract would have blown past the limits and incurred a next year penalty. So I was right.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 29, 2016 -> 12:26 PM) How did guys like Abreu, Alexei and viciedo fit into this? I am certainly not an expert on this and someone can probably answer with more certainty, but I am nearly positive that Abreu and Alexei were past the age cut off to be a part of the international spending restrictions. As for Viciedo, I think he was signed before the latest changes to international signings which instituted the restrictions and subsequent penalties if going over, IIRC. Same deal with Alexei, even if he was subject to the restrictions (still think he was past age cut off), it was before these new rules were enacted.
  20. QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 11:58 AM) First time playing a team under .500 since May 19, and that team was the now over .500 Astros Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 01:10 PM) Perhaps you are correct, in asserting that the Brewers wouldn't give up Lucroy without asking for a ransom. However, they may be willing to indeed move Braun for not much more than salary relief. According to an article in today's MLB Traderumors, by Steve Adams, they might want to move Braun's salary in order to achieve the financial flexibility to try to resign Lucroy. Here is what he wrote: "While Jonathan Lucroy is perhaps the most-cited trade candidate in baseball, GM David Stearns tells Heyman that an extension can’t be entirely ruled out. Heyman notes that if the Brewers are able to move Ryan Braun, they could look to reallocate some of those funds to locking up Lucroy, who is more open to an extension now that the Brewers are performing better than most pundits expected. There could, of course, be some level of gamesmanship there, as it would make sense for any team official to downplay a prime trade target’s availability." Would you be in favor of taking on all of Braun's contract, if it didn't require giving up any significant talent? Sure, but I doubt it'll happen.
  22. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jun 24, 2016 -> 12:48 PM) I'm not going to dispute that, but I wonder on what you base your assertion. It was my understanding that the Brewers are very desirous of moving Braun's salary. How can they expect to accomplish that, and still get a couple of top prospects? Lucroy alone is probably worth at least of one Fulmer or Anderson (plus some) - I am sure that the Brewers would ask for both. And the Brewers aren't just going to give Braun away for salary relief.
