QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Sep 9, 2015 -> 11:47 AM) How do you come up with "very good player?" What stats back that up? As I noted above 23rd of 24 in WAR. He may be worth $10MM to the Sox because they have no one else, but he is not good. Ok, "very" may have been a stretch. But I still like Alexei. I wouldn't argue if they declined the option and went with an internal option, but nothing on the FA market is better than Alexei. I bet that if the Sox decline the option, Alexei will come very close to matching that total in AAV, and will likely get a multi-year deal. Since mid June, Alexei has been "very" good, and that is more the ball player that I think he is. The dude is streaky, and likely will continue to be, but as I have already said, if the Sox are trying to compete for the division next year, Alexei gives them the best chance to do that, IMO.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:02 PM) These post all star game numbers are what is called in the trade a "salary drive" nothing more. Personally I don't think the Sox are going anywhere next year without massive changes to the front office / manager / coaching staff. That's not going to happen. So...why waste 10 million on a player who is as inconsistent as they come, will be 34, can't hit in cold weather, is a mental midget and loses concentration at the drop of a hat? Alexei showed much promise in 2008 but for the most part, like the entire team, organization has been a disappointment. Mark This post is a disappointment. Alexei's option will be picked up next year. $10M it today's game isn't all that much, and Alexei will be worth the price tag. He is still a very good player, and considering the other FA options, the option should be picked up. I wouldn't hate going with internal options at SS next year if the Sox are virtually punting the season, but with the pitching staff and the investments made last offseason, I find it very hard to believe that will happen.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 06:46 AM) I hate to go all Vince McMahon on you but.... There is no chance in hell this team makes that 2nd wildcard. This team can't even play .500 baseball. They had a golden opportunity this year with a mediocre AL and they blew it. It's time to start thinking about 2016. Let's see what these kids can do. #letTraycePlayEveryday If the sox blew it, so did the other 10 teams who missed the playoffs.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 02:02 PM) Nah. I'm not sure it's possible to be more annoying than somebody talking about their fantasy team. Well that is about all that is left to entertain you when your (real) team sucks balls. -

Saladino could take over ss until Anderson is ready

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 10:16 PM) Please no. His bat sucks. I'd rather sign a 1 year deal with vet who at least provides a decent bat. Saladino is a utility player. Defensive replacement. There aren't any. Declining the option on Alexei and trying to resign him on a 1 year deal for less may be their best option. Other than that, the top of the SS market would be Desmond (won't sign a 1 year deal), Asdrubal Cabrera and Stephen Drew. Yuck. I bet Alexei is the SS next season, but would be sign with Saladino or Sanchez if they punt the season (which I doubt they'll do). -

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 12:38 PM) I don't think Boston's system is overrated. In the last few years they have promoted Bogaerts and Iglesias, two young and very talented shortstops. They have also produced Reddick, Betts and now Bradley as outfielders. They also have produced 2 solid young catchers in Swihart and Vazquez. I was not a Middlebrooks fan but they were able to trade him and they also have Brock Holt who is a super sub in the mold of Zobrist. That is quite a haul in a few years. Their problem has been getting young pitchers and that may change. They have 4 or 5 either in Boston or will be in SP. But my guess is it is a too late. Rumor is they want an ace and dombrowski has set his sights on David Price again. I have posted several times on this site that I was hoping for a Q for Swihart or Vazquez , Bradley + prospects but the way Bradley has exploded even that won't happen. I doubt Sale goes. But I think Q or even Rodon could bring back 2 solid ML players. I have been assuming Q but maybe a Sale/Q combo is better than a Sale/Rodon based on style of pitching. Unless the prospects you speak of are the headliners in the deal, that trade would be comically bad for the White Sox.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 10:15 AM) I like Q a lot, but he is not better than Keuchel or Arrieta. Keuchel and Q have nearly identical career ERA and FIP. Q has a significantly higher career WAR. Sure, Keuchel has been better this year, but overall, I'd take Quintana. Plus Q is controlled a year longer, and assuming Keuchel doesn't sign a long term deal buying out his arb years, Q will likely be much cheaper. I admittedly haven't watched Arrieta pitch much with the Cubs. I don't watch the NL much, and have never lived in Chicago, so the Cubs aren't the team I love to hate like most Sox fans (that's the Twins for me). But I do know his career numbers would be pails in comparison to Qs, but I also know he is not the same pitcher he was early in his career.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 09:37 AM) What? Which guys? IMO, of the players listed, he is better than Verlander, Keuchel, Hamels, Arreita, Zimmerman and Snydergaard. This is talent alone, nothing to do with contract situations, which is only going to improve his value versus the majority of players on that list. I don't think he is too far behind / in the same neighborhood as several others - Kluber, Archer, Darvish, Wainwright, Cole, Cueto, Bumgarner. If you look at this surplus value, he is definitely more "valuable" than over half of those guys. Quintana is undervalued in the worst kind of way - even amongst Sox fans. If this guy had a good defense behind him, or better yet, a good defense and some run support, he would undoubtedly be considered elite by all knowledgeable baseball fans. His lack of run support is crazy.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 09:08 AM) Not many teams have an actual ace though. There are like only 20 in all of baseball probably. Chris Sale Corey Kluber Justin Verlander (Used to be an Ace) Johnny Cueto Chris Archer David Price Dallas Keuchel Sonny Gray Cole Hamels Yu Darvish Felix Hernandez Jake Arrieta Adam Wainwright Gerrit Cole Clayton Kershaw Zack Greinke Madison Bumgarner Max Scherzer Jordan Zimmerman (Maybe not?) Harvey, DeGrom, Syndergaard? Fernandez of the Marlins I believe that Rodon could be on this list soon as well as a few other young guys. Any objections? Anyone I left off. Quintana is better than about half the guys on that list. If he spent the last 4 years on the Cardinals, he'd be widely considered one of the top 5 pitchers in the game.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 08:29 PM) Quintana should have his bags packed Only if an elite ML bat is coming back (plus some unless said bat is cost controlled for some time).

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 09:48 AM) Don't look now, but the Indians won 6 in a row and are 64-66, with 32 left. If they can grab another win in Toronto, and the Rangers fall back, they are very much in it. It would be a punch to the gut if a cluster of teams end up 83-79 or 82-80 for the 2nd wc and the Sox aren't one of them. http://espn.go.com/mlb/standings/_/view/wi...rd/group/league A good starting point for the Sox to get hope back would be to go into Minnesota and win three games. Do it. Wouldn't that be great. Starts with Chris tonight. He has a 6.46 ERA against the Twins, and a 2.31 ERA against the rest of the league. A whopping 17 of his 61 ER this year are against the Twins. He needs to SHUT THEM DOWN!

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 03:41 PM) There is no way that the Sox should pick up Alexei's option. Sanchez and Saladino should play SS the rest of the way. I am very happy you don't make any decisions pertaining to the White Sox. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 11:39 PM) Is this guy a golden throated homer? I'd rather have Stoney take over as play by play with somebody like Paulie as colorman. Stoney can get used to play by play. Or let Farmer do it with Stoney. and Orsillo with DJ on radio. Hahahaha PK will not return to the game in an announcing capacity. I could see him managing/coaching someday, but right now, PK is enjoying retirement. -

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Aug 22, 2015 -> 08:09 AM) Agreed. Colorado needs pitching bady. I would try and swap Montas for MiLB 3B Ryan McMahon. According to MLB's rankings, they are pretty close with Montas ranked #60 and McMahon #56. Not like McMahon will be playing 3B with Arenado cemented in that position. I like it. I hope the Sox explore lots of minors for minors swaps this winter. McMahon-Montas would be a good start. Outside of moving Fulmer, the Sox need to cash in on some of their pitching prospects. We know we can develop pitchers, use it as an advantage and go get some bats. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 20, 2015 -> 07:46 AM) Maybe not even Alexei. A team could claim him and then buy out his option and not be on the hook for too much money. Almost certainly Danks, LaRoche and Melky. Possibly Duke. Maybe Robertson, though he wouldn't be moved anyway. I don't know why Albers wouldn't get claimed. He's not owed much. I wouldn't be that surprised to see Melky claimed. Dude is far and away cheaper than any other FA options. His contract isn't that bad in today's game. But the Sox wouldn't and shouldn't let him go.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 19, 2015 -> 01:19 PM) This is what I have been saying since we fell out of the race. Jason Heyward makes this defense and line up better. Sounds nice and all, but man is he going to be expensive.
