4.5 GB of the Twins and closing in quick.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 09:48 PM) Could it be a tactic to try to get more? More likely a case of now being only 4.5 GB of the Twins with a middling TB and Detroit ahead of them and only 1.5 GB of Toronto and Baltimore. Like it or not, this team has played itself into contention the past 5 days.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 04:54 PM) Yuck. I don't think it's that bad if the Sox want to buy and sell. Gets us out from under Danks contract next year, but picks up Sheilds to slide into the #3 slot for a few years (albeit at a very high price). Gets us a legit bat in RF for the rest of the year and opens it for us to over pay for Jason Heyward or Upton if we like him. Shields gives is the ability to flip Shark for Petecost and Hoffman which would be a great return. I'm of the opinion that Micah will never be a passable defender at 2B and has no other position and will probably either be traded or kept too long and will have no value. I don't hate Avi at all, but do recognize his short comings in the OF. I don't think its all bad, but I'm not paying all these contracts, and I generally like to see the Sox go for it each and every year.

Here is an off the wall and totally unrealistic idea: Avi, Micah and Danks to SD (maybe throw in another low-level lottery ticket) Shields and Justin Upton to the Sox Sox then flip Shark to Toronto for Pentecost and Hoffman

QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 03:47 PM) Who is a good comp to Anderson? Keith Law used Shawon Dunston as his comp.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 02:37 PM) As much as I love Q, the time maybe now or offseason to move him if we can add a true impact bat. Sure, but Kyle Schwarber isn't that guy (by himself). You're falling into the trap, bro.
-
QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 01:43 PM) Question; Is Quintana worth Schwarber? Gahhh? For real. I'd hate that.

Would being patient and standing pat make sense?

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 12:53 PM) There's something weird going on with Semien's defense this year, but I have no reason to believe he'd bad at 3B or 2B. He's definitely in one hell of a slump right now, though. We'll see where he is at the end of the year. ?? He was pretty bad at 3B when he played there last year. 10 errors in less than 100 chances. SSS, but the guy just isn't a good infielder. -

QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 01:27 PM) My god man, your Everything Sucks routine is exhausting. Nothing about that package has changed since the beginning of the year. Most of the 2.4 comes from that stiff Phegley, and don't bother arguing he isn't a stiff as a result of 100 nice AB's because I refuse to take that notion seriously. Semien is still probably a nice infielder and remains a legitimately tough guy to lose. Bassitt is still just a Guy with a capital G. Ravelo I like, but he's about an average MLBer at best. Add it all up and it's hardly something to throw around the phrase "after all we gave up" to describe. Yep. Glad someone else agrees. -
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 12:30 PM) No we're not. We were ALL convinced last week this team wasn't going anywhere, Shark (or perhaps Quintana) needed to go, and this organization desparately needed a significant return to help improve this team's future. Now four days have past and we shouldn't be sellers because of the Indians series?! It's so ridiculous and shortsighted that I fear that the FO thinks similarily. They're too cowardly and afraid to admit their vision for a playoff team failed miseralbe. Hahn should be not be waiting until the conclusion of the Boston series, even if the team happens to sweep them. This is NOT A PLAYOFF TEAM. Have people not been aware of this historically terrible offense? Or it's record against contending teams? I hope they do sweep Boston. It'll test how much courage our front office has to do what's right. After they would inevitable cave and keep Shark, we could then all sit back and watch the White Sox finish around 82 wins for the season. After Shark leaves, we'll have the same offense, same front office, but one supplemental round pick! The kind of crazy thing is, that if the Sox DO sweep Boston, they'll probably be somewhere between 1-2 games away from being a playoff team if the season ended on Thursday. A big if, no doubt, but it is also sort of difficult to trade one of the best 25 pitchers in baseball at this juncture unless the price is right (that price being a very good offensive return). Bottom line, Shark is very unlikely to bring back anything that is going to help this offense now, or even a couple years. If they find that, sure, move him - but I think he would have been traded by now if that were the case. Also, despite this historically terrible offense you mention, the Sox find themselves in the position described above. What does that tell you? They have a fu**in studly pitching staff. The offense has been coming around, and the Sox have really been throwing some leather in the infield for sometime..I'd honestly be pretty disappointed if the Sox moved Shark unless they got a ton back (unless they drop 2 or three in a row here, then I get it). You play this game to win. The Sox still have a small but surely a chance to win. I may be in the minority here, but one of the reasons why I love this franchise so much - they refuse to just allow themselves to be s***ty. No team ahead of them in the race for the 2nd WC really scares me. Minnesota will fade, I guarantee it. Toronto and Baltimore will be the main competition and those are very flawed teams (as are the Sox). I do think it all comes down to the next few days. Win a few more in a row, and I'd eat my hat if Shark is traded unless it brings back a bat that'll help RIGHT NOW.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:47 AM) This has crossed my mind lately, especially with the sweep of the Indians. I think we can all agree that sweeping the Indians was nice, but they are a bad team, and the Sox should have easily won that series. A four game sweep against any team, however, is impressive. What concerns me is that even after that sweep, the Sox are still 4 games below .500. They need to beat up on Boston this week. With only four days left before the deadline, the Sox are truly right on the fence between buying and selling. They could play very well this week only to tank next week...or vice versa. Based on the history of this team this season though, I don't expect them to be true buyers. I could definitely see them trading Samardjiza and picking up a bat in the same trade or a separate one. Or I suppose Danks could be moved, swapped with another "bad" contract. Regardless, I think Friday will be an interesting day. I just hope the Sox don't stand pat...that could be the worst outcome. Before that Sox series, many pundits still gave Cleveland a decent shot at getting back into things...so let's not act like they're suddenly the worst team is baseball.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:46 AM) According to Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com, the Blue Jays have been most aggressive on Jeff Samardzija. Hayes adds that the Giants are also interested. Samardzija owns a 3.91 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 108/26 K/BB ratio in 140 1/3 innings this season with the White Sox and he's been especially dominant lately. The 30-year-old impending free agent should yield a nice return package. It looked for a while like the Pale Hose might have to sell low on him. Related: Blue Jays Source: Dan Hayes on TwitterJul 27 - 12:41 PM But are the Sox really gonna trade him to a team that in 2 games of them in the standings? The price just went up in my opinion. Pentecost and Hoffman or go away. But I feel like the Sox will at least see how the next four days play out. Sweep or win 3/4, I doubt Shark goes unless they get a ransom.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:17 AM) No, because they're better than Samardzija. Kazmir has been better when looking at ERA, but dig deeper, and Shark has actually been better. Plus, c'mon, who would you rather have pitching for you in a must win game? Sort of a no-brainer to me.

QUOTE (JolietThunder @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 08:27 AM) This four game sweep was the worst thing that could have happen for our long term future. I hope FO doesn't start believing in this team like I did after seeing great pitching( which is norm for us), stellar defense (not use to seeing around here) and some timely hitting ( also not use to seeing). I want this team to take CUBS approach and suck for few year and stock pile our minor league roster. Yuck. You can always just cheer for the cubs.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:35 AM) Tough to project trading Danks by fans since we don't know all the details of his no-trade clause. But I think it is realiistic to assume Toronto is part of the no-trade. Dodgers may be okay. Yep. Always tough to project a trade of a bad contract guy. He's likely going nowhere..but I do like the idea. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a better option than the Dodgers with Ethier and Crawford. Not sure anyone else would take Danks for their worst contract in a 1-1 trade.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:26 AM) I don't think that's a horrible idea. Clearly he's ready for the majors as a hitter, but the problem will be that the White Sox view that DH position as a power spot (despite the lack of production La Roche has provided). When the offense is bad, and there's a guy who can help, why not? Does he still project as a 2B or are they considering the OF with him? OF not an option. Bad arm. He projects as a 2B, and sure, not getting everyday game reps may not help, but he can play winter ball, and being up with big club getting daily work at 2B can't hurt. But it does look like Sanchez just may be grabbing ahold of 2B - his D is just so fun to watch and that bat has been red hot. DH Micah a few days a week, let him play 2B now and then. And if hits, they'll find a spot for him, or they can always use him as trade bait. Wouldn't mind seeing Micah and Tim Anderson moved for a top 25 prospect that isn't a middle infielder...I feel like we have that covered. This team needs to improve their D going forward, and those two aren't likely to help much in that department.

QUOTE (AlSoxfan @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 11:19 AM) Oh come on he's 23..this is really his first yr. I think he gets better No one on the White Sox has value in Balta's mind. Just ask him. The guy clearly knows baseball, but his negative nancy BS gets hard to read. Avi is 23 years old, and as someone else just eloquently stated, would have tons and tons of value if he were still in AAA raking away. Sure, he has been terribly frustrating this season, but I doubt the Sox completely give up on him. I suppose I wouldn't be shocked if they traded him - but they won't if he's not a key piece of the deal. But then again, Balta thought Melky was a sunk cost a month ago when it was extremely obvious that the guy was hitting into comically bad luck and would turn a corner. And look at him now...just raking away.

I do like the bad contract swap idea. Danks has been pitching better, but I still think this team is better off with EJ in the 5 spot - so if you can get a bat for him, let's do it. At this point, I'd just be fine with giving Micah Johnson ABs at DH. He'd be a HUGE upgrade to what we're getting there now. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Just DL LaRoche, or keep him on the bench for a late inning PH role..he's worthless right now.

QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jul 27, 2015 -> 07:51 AM) Not to be a buzzkill, but if this is the Sox team I've been following all year .. they know when we get excited. They know when we have favorable pitching matchups. I am fully expecting a sweep by Boston just so we can go back to being miserable again. Prove me wrong White Sox! Touche, but this game tonight has me about as excited for a game as I've been since the last game of the Cubs series. And that was the last game I was super excited about for awhile...so they've sucked me back in for now. Sweep Boston (or even 3/4) and I'll be bouncing around.

At this point, Geo should be starting as much as he can take. If he can take all starters besides Sale, great. Maybe give Tyler one more start a week, but Geo gives the Sox a much better chance to win. Would also like to see Emilo DFA'd or traded for a bag of balls immediately and call up Micah to DH a few days a week, or maybe better yet, DL LaRoche so Micah can DH everyday. Time to try go for this thing. It is really do or die time.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 09:18 PM) I'm honestly surprised that those 3 players combine for a 2.4 fWAR. I'd assume that Semien's defense alone makes him a negative WAR player. His WAR has dropped like a rock since his early start. Semien wouldn't have anywhere to play on the Sox. His D at 3B would be terrible. The Sox didn't give up anything they're going to regret in a big way. -
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 08:51 PM) To me, the 2015 Twins = the 2012 White Sox. They'll fall off, it's just a matter of when. Except worse. I live in Minneapolis and watch the Twins quite a bit. They're not good. Early season success was all due to crazy high BA with RISP.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 08:03 PM) Don't see it. #MNTwins playing .531 ball & are 2nd wild card. That's on pace for 86 wins. #WhiteSox would have to go 40-26 to do that -- very tall order. https://twitter.com/CSNHayes/status/625458965921562625 This was my response @CSNHayes 40-26 would be sox going on a .600 winning percentage for rest of year. Pretty much winning every series here on out. Can't see it https://twitter.com/whisox05/status/625461892857860096 And hayes agreed with me Certainly a tall order but I'd still be surprised if the Twins finished with 85 wins. They'll miss the playoffs. 83 wins may do it. Just keep winning.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 26, 2015 -> 02:22 PM) We already decided, Micah is coming up to DH per GMs of Soxtalk (including me) Fine with me.

Call up Kottaras and DH him. Way better option than LaRoche at this point.
