If the SOX signed Garza to the contract the Brewers are close to signing him to, I wouldn't be mad. I think Garza would be a nice addition. Do I understand why waiting another year makes sense? Absolutely. But you can never have enough good pitching. Garza (with no draft pick compensation) for $13M per year is not that big of a risk. Now, Santana and Ubaldo are a bit different due to draft pick compensation. No point in the SOX forfeiting that pick when they've had their best draft position in eons, and when considering the overall state of the organization.

I'd like to see the SOX allocate roughly $50M-$55M of what they offered Tanaka and go get Matt Garza. If anything, the Tanaka sweepstakes have shown that the Ricky is ready to spend to make this team competitive as quickly as possible. I think putting Garza in the 2 spot in the rotation makes this a much better team, and it solves the rotation for the next several seasons.

Sox re-sign Gordo and De Aza 1 year each

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 04:14 PM) Does anyone actually call Beckham "gordo'? I do. -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 25, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) I see no reason why Hector Noesi of the Mariners shouldn't be available, nor any reason Hahn shouldn't look into him. The Mariners could use DeAza in the OF IMO & maybe Dunn some in the DH slot. DeAza + Dunn + tons of cash for Noesi and some other pitching maybe? I'd love to see the Sox pull some arms out of that org. Noesi would be a nice #5 and add righty balance with potential to far exceed that. Wow what a horrid deal that would be for the sox.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 07:48 PM) s*** for some reason I thought he was signed through next year too, at 15m, well that makes trading him a bit easier although it also means you're only saving 7 million or so if you trade him at the deadline. Man, if Dunn was even 3/4 of the player he was in Cincy for the Sox that would have been a great contract. Still one of the more bizarre cases of a player just completely cratering after a long run of success I've seen. While not as good as he was earlier in his career, Dunn has been pretty close to as advertised the past two seasons. 2011 was obviously an epic failure, but the guy has blasted 75 home runs the past two seasons. That's Adam Dunn.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:19 PM) I thought for sure we were going to acquire a veteran MI bat. Doesn't seem to be a real need for this team, in all honesty.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:41 PM) It makes no sense to platoon him with a 30 year old who is on the last year of his contract. Give Dayan everyday AB's in LF for at least 1/2 the season and see if he has put anything together yet. Trading him shouldn't be an option either because you would be selling pretty much at his lowest possible point. And this is coming from someone who doesn't have much hope for Dayan White Sox have 2 more years of control on De Aza. I'd like to trade De Aza, but I wouldn't just give him away. He is a solid player, and would fit in just fine in any lineup batting 7th or 8th. The Sox need LH bats. I would use De Aza as the 4th OF who gets starts at every OF position once a week, maybe twice in LF. Not a straight platoon, because I think Dayan needs ABs, but definitely get him in there. Someone will come calling for De Aza eventually - just wait until the return is right. He doesn't HAVE to be moved.

Quite a post. Agreed with most, but a few things just out there. One thing is for certain, the excitement level of sox fans has gone up 10 fold since a mere 5 months ago.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) uhhhhh, wha? It was a joke. Steve Adams at MLBTR does live chats every now and then. A user with the name "Rick Hahn" asked those two questions. Adams said De Aza has more value, because Viciedo is a poor mans Mark Trumbo. Adam also said the SOX would have to eat $10M to move Dunn. Just some dudes opinion.

Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson
ChiSox59 replied to dayan024's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Rob Neyer is one guy who doesn't like the trade for the SOX. Just dogged Davidson, basically only considering him a 1B, which makes no sense with Abreu - who he didn't mention. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 03:11 PM) John Manuel @johnmanuelba 1h Did our #WhiteSox top 30; newly acquired Matt Davidson would slot in No. 4, right where @BaseballAmerica had him in #Diamondbacks system Who would be #1-#3? Abreu Johnson Semien? I am guessing Eaton and Avi are no longer considered "prospects".. -
Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson

LOVE LOVE LOVE the trade! Rick obviously has a vision here, and I like it. This young core is very exciting, and I have a feeling Rick is not done yet. I wish Addison nothing but the best in the desert. Great guy, and very talented. I am happy to hear the Snakes will give him 9th inning duties. As for the bench, let's let the rest of the offseason play out. As other have mentioned, Gillaspie doesn't make a ton of sense on a roster with Davidson, but I'd still much rather have him around than Keppinger. Hopefully they can find someone to take Kepp off our hands for .75 cents on the dollar. Very exciting news...I love what Hahn has done to this team since last July. Next year may be painful, but the sox are going to have a boatload of cash next offseason. Give Gordo, Viciedo, and Flowers / Phegley one more year to prove if they're everyday MLBers. If not, go out and add to this young core and do battle for the Central in 2015. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) No he's not. You are making things up. Gordon was certainly one of the better defenders in the game at 2B in 2012. Last year...not so much.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 05:58 PM) I'll just go ahead and post my spitball trade here, instead of the winter meetings thread, since this isn't a rumor, just an idea..... Jays-Sox-Mariners. Sox get 3B Brett Lawrie and SS Chris Taylor Mariners get CF Colby Rasmus and P Scott Snodgress Jays get 2B Gordon Beckham, RP Nate Jones, C Jesus Montero, and P Edwin Diaz Jays would have to go out an get another 3B, tho.

Both AA and Hahn have suggested they're working on 3-ways with some momentum within the past couple hours.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 04:52 PM) As of now, I would say: vs RHP Eaton 8 De Aza 7 AGarcia 9 Abreu 3 Dunn DH Ramirez 6 Beckham 4 Gillaspie 5 Phegley 2 vs LHP Eaton 8 Beckham 4 AGarcia 9 Abreu 3 Konerko DH Viciedo 7 Ramirez 6 Gillaspie 5 Phegley 2 Bench: Flowers, LGarcia Kepp should play against LHP. A Gillaspie / Kepp straight platoon should actually be fairly productive, assuming Kepp remembers how to hit a baseball. That said, if a real 3B becomes available, I don't think twice.

Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs
ChiSox59 replied to Baron's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Any affirmation of this yet? -
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 09:09 PM) Danks for Gardner straight up even is probably a reach for the Sox, let alone with more thrown in When they say '3rd or 4th starter'.......they mean lower total money than what Danks makes. Many 3rd and 4th starters on the open market have gotten multi-year deals at annual values north of $10M. If Danks is healthy, and throwing like he can, he is a bargain at that rate. If he pitches like he did last year...he's a bit overpaid. But the likely result of somewhere in between and Danks is paid just about right. But now is not the right time to trade Danks.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 08:07 PM) I don't want to trade Sale. Me either. He is really f'in good. That said, if the Dbacks were ever dumb enough to offer some of the sillier deals thrown out here, I'd pull the trigger if I were Hahn. Say, Bradley, Skaggs, Gregorious, Trahan and Davidson for Sale and Alexei - just fills so many holes. But, that's not happening.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 03:52 PM) I agree, there's no reason to carry a backup 1b on this roster for Abreu when Dunn can be the emergency fill-in. Abreu should be pushed past 150 games this year. Seriously though, compare the two situations. We're so worried about backups for 1b for some reason that we have 4 different guys on the roster who can backup 1b (5 if you count Flowers). And I think that's a great illustration of why I'm still convinced this takes away a bunch of playing time from Abreu and hurts the roster. You're still b****ing about this? Doesn't your head hurt?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 07:51 PM) So the exact same guys will produce more than last year now that they're both a year older. No. Dunn will play far less against LHP and Konerko will play far less against RHP. Ya know, to maximize production. Figured you were capable of figuring that out.

Under control for 3 more seasons, so maybe Coop sees something in him he likes.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 5, 2013 -> 05:14 PM) Let's take Jesus Montero, too His career behind the plate is ova.

Ronald Belisaro will make more money that PK14 next year.

Hmmm. Well, the pen could use an arm, so this works, but I would think they could have gotten similar production out of a cheaper scrapheap pickup, and/or Petricka / Webb.
