So let's just say the Sox stand pat, because in your opinion, this team isn't good enough to compete for a playoff berth with Conforto + Frazier + Pillar. Which, by the way, pretty sure the Sox would be the favorites in the ALC by a good bit with that offseason. I will just remind you that the Conforto + Frazier + Pillar scenario still leaves a very large hole in RF for Colas to take once he earns it. The difference is that...if Colas doesn't earn it, or he gets hurt, or he comes up and hits .150 in his first month, the Sox still have 3 other major league quality players they can play in the OF that aren't currently on the roster. If you don't sign anyone, you don't have any of that. We're looking as Cespedes and Sheets as our starting corners. IF the Sox pencil Colas into a corner from day 1 and he flops, or gets hurt...they're fucked. We can all have our opinions on where this team currently shakes out in this division, but I can promise you that the organization thinks the team is good enough AS IS to win the division. So certainly supplementing the roster with major league caliber players won't make it worse.

It certainly doesn't if they don't do the right thing and keep him in AAA to start the year. Here's the thing. Colas is currently the 2nd best OF in the organization. There is little argument there. The problem is, we don't really know what we're going to get from him at the major league level as a rookie. Relying on him as Plan A in RF is well....a terrible plan. If he flops, Sox have absolutely nothing behind him. It is unlikely he is going to rake from the get go. Sign Conforto/Gallo for one corner or acquire an above average LH OF via trade. Sign Frazier/Profar/Drury to cover the other corner for the first month. Then, once Colas earns his everyday spot in Chicago, Frazier/Profar/Drury become super utility players - a guy like Frazier could factor into 2B everyday - Profar and Drury occasionally. All three can cover the OF and play IF, some more than others (which is why I actually like the Frazier fit). Then sign a RH 4th OF like Pillar and go to battle. Does Conforto + Frazier + Pillar require Sox to dump some money? It shouldn't - it would put the Sox almost exactly where they were in 2022 payroll wise. Its unlikely the Sox don't make any trades. Perhaps the LH OF comes via trade as the means of saving the ~$18M you'd have to pay Conforto.

One corner will be the primary LH OF addition, whether that is via FA or trade. Conforto still feels possible, but sadly perhaps out of the Sox price range. The other corner will likely be scrap heap signing like Adam Frazier with some Sheets/Leury sprinkled in. Once Colas arrives a few weeks into the season, he takes over a corner (might be left depending on who is acquired for the other corner) and Frazier/scrapheap signing shifts to 2B rotation and OF reserve.

Huh? The position they have to fill voa trade or FA is an OF. They can go internal at 2B. Nothing you’re saying is making any sense. Everyone was penciling Colas into their 2023 OFs, what people were likely telling you is that he’s unlikely to break camp with the Sox. He still shouldn’t, but feels more likely now than ever. Sox should really sign someone like Conforto + someone like Frazier who can play OF for a few weeks until Colas arrives.

The Sox need 2 OFs. I doubt anyone argued that Colas would be 1 of them coming June 2023.

Jose Abreu and Joey Gallo's fWAR per game played are nearly identical. Joey Gallo is a very flawed player, but pointing to his batting average as the sole determining factor of his value is really, really dumb.

The other real head scratcher here is Pina makes $4.5M in 2023 with a $4M player option for 2024. So unlike the A's. You'd sure think they'd prefer Seby to Pina based on the cost alone. Clearly the A's wanted some pitching back, getting 2 MLB ready arms. The Sox clearly don't have the upper minors pitching depth the A's wanted.

I am not disappointed the Sox didn't acquire Murphy as if we're going to be firing off our limited bullets, I'd prefer it before for something other than the catcher position. But that return is so questionable. Like how did the Brewers finagle their way into this thing. Very strange.
