  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 12, 2014 -> 02:39 PM) I'm actually really hoping Sanchez nails down 2B out of ST because I think he can be a plus defender there. Sounds like Micah has the bat, but is fringey in the field, and I just don't think we can afford to add another fringey defender next year. I think that the team's defense is holding them back from being a really good team. There's defensive question marks at 3rd (I think that the team should think about Gilapse in LF and finding a defensive minded 3rd baseman.), 2nd and LF.
  2. I was thinking what would be the perfect draft scenario for the Sox. This is what I came up with: The Sox draft Michael Matuella with the 8th overall pick. He projects to be a high upside starting pitcher with a fastball that tops out at 97mph and grade projects to be a 70 on the grading scale and three other plus pitches. He could be a fixture in the rotation or if that fails he could be a high upside reliever (If the Sox are making a playoff push, maybe he could join the bullpen and help the Sox out a la Brandon Finnegan.). Since he is a college player, maybe the Sox could sign him below slot. The Sox already have an extra $1 Million to spend. In the third and fourth rounds the team will go overslot to sign some high upside high school talent like: OF Kyle Tucker, C Wyatt Cross, 3B Ryan Mountcastle, OF Mitchell Hansen, and P Nolan Watson. That would be the perfect draft scenario. Side note: I was also thinking about what the team's biggest organizational weakness is and it's pretty obivious, the Sox need to start developing impact bats across the diamond.
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 09:19 PM) Someone make sense of this for me. What exactly is a too LH OF ? Ther'e only 3 OF positions and unless there's a switch hitter in the bunch it'll either be 2 RH's or 2 LH's. ANd there iare still some guys who bat LH but throw RH. I think he's counting Eaton and Danks, who projects to be the fourth outfielder.

  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) You can take a lot more draft picks that you throw that amount below $100K which doesn't count towards your overages (so while we aren't talking about going overslot on a guy in the 15th round with a 1st round value, you could go overslot on a significant number of guys in later rounds that might have been 5-12th round talent and convince them. As an ORG, we also have had situations where we haven't even spend to our international cap anyway (I believe we still have cushion in our budget right now). I wanted the Sox to jump on Bryan Emery (16, 6'4, 200 L/L) but he signed with the Yankees. I know they still have a just short of a million shy of INTL spending as of July 2nd, but they could have used that money to sign more players under the radar.
  6. I didn't know where to post this but this organization needs to sure up the catching situation. Flowers is not the long term answer.
  7. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) Dan Hayes said that they can reallocate that $1 million elsewhere. It does come out of the draft pool though. I knew that would come out of the draft pool, I just thought they would loose the $ associated with the pick since the pick was forfeited.
  8. Dan Hayes said that the team keeps the $1M associated with the second round pick.
  9. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) maybe it is me and my stubbornness, but i still see him as a starter. granted lets see how he does. Ackley is a starter, the guy ended the season on a surge. All of his skills are starting to come together. Put him in a room with Severson and you have a greatly improved player, and he'll be playing in the Cell not Safeco. I would take Ackley at LF over, Cargo, Rasmus and Melky.
  10. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 11:38 AM) Perhaps I didn't articulate my thought clearly. What I meant was that this team needs to fill the hole in LF with someone better than Ackley. I agree that Viciedo is not acceptable either. If they move Viciedo, they don't have to move him for a left fielder, as someone else just pointed out. However, if the guy that they acquire is not a significant upgrade in left, then I'd just as soon that they trade him, and his $4 million salary for low cost, prospects for the future. They then have a roster spot open for that needed left fielder, and a little extra money to spend on him. What kind of prospects do you expect to get for Dayan?
  11. Dustin Ackley gets my vote.
  12. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) Most elite baseball minds would tell you that your best hitter should hit #2. And let them hit, none of this "get em' over, get em' in" BS. Both have merits, but the 2 hole is not utilized in the "traditional" way by many teams these days. I agree with the people, you're best all around hitter should bat 2nd not 3rd.
  13. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:47 AM) and i am one of the biggest advocate of that. except for this time around. i rather get something usable for DV than nothing. I am not saying that you don't. I'm saying that I think getting back Ackley is maximizing your return.
  14. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:36 AM) Dustin Ackley is Brent Lillibridge 2.0...no thanks unless he's a 4th OF'er. Tank for Carson Smith would be a pretty good deal for us but not sure if that would be asking for too much And Ackley is way better than Lillibridge.
  15. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:39 AM) the point is not to ask for too much in order to get the deal done. Ackley is the player that will be needed to be move if sea takes DV Always try to maximize your return and I would rather have Ackley than a bullpen arm, especially since the Sox are trying to compete. The guy fills a ton of needs.
  16. Ackley is similar to Viciedo, both failed to meet expectations (Viciedo's a failed prospect and Ackley was supposed to be the savior of the Mariners.) and a change of scenery could do both them justice. Ackley is a better defensive player than Viciedo, he's good on the base baths and he's a left handed bat and he allows the Sox to be as athletic as possible. He also strikes out 32 times less
  17. I heard that Myers name is being floated around. That would be a get but the Sox would no doubt have to give up some prizes prospect of their own.
  18. QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 07:14 AM) No reason to not go over projected slot on the 1st round pick, which the sox have been willing to do more recently I think that they lost the money tied to the second round pick, so their pool is smaller. I have my fingers crossed that Brendon Rodgers falls to them.
  19. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 07:38 AM) Under team control for three more years. His contract isn't bad, either. $12MM in 2015, $12.5MM in 2016, and a $13MM team option in 2017. Your draft strategy should and always be to take the best player available.
  20. Ackley can also play second, in addition to left field.
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 06:59 AM) If this team is seriously going to compete, they cannot have a left fielder with little power and a .300 OBP. Ackley is not an upgrade. Next? QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 07:17 AM) but i like him for other reasons, which makes this an ideal trade. second to Bruce. he bats #2 and if injury to Eaton, will lead off. Both Kenny and Hahn have said that they want the team to be as athletic as possible and Ackley allows that. He's a good runner, a solid defender (From what I have seen, I need to check the metrics on the glove but he can't be worst than Viciedo.) and another left handed bat. His offensive numbers should improve in a better ballpark and a better lineup.
  22. QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 07:02 AM) This is a very important draft for us. The samardzija deal didn't kill us but did tap into our depth a bit. With our payroll near maxed, need to keep influxing young affordable players into the major league team We also lost a second round pick.
  23. I know it's a long shot but I would love for the Sox to get back Dustin Ackley in any deal with Seattle. He could be a good left fielder for the Sox, and he wouldn't break the bank. Imagine this line up: Eaton - CF (L) Ramirez - SS Abreu - DH LaRoche - 1B (L) Garcia - RF Gillapse -3B (L) Ackley - LF (L) Flowers - C Johnson - 2B (L) What do you think?
  24. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) I'm glad we signed him, but I know I'm not alone in saying it's a shame Bellisario won't be given another chance. I lost 20 pounds last season when he came out of the pen. GIFSoup I want them to bring back Belisario as a MR, the dude has potential and he throws heat. He is going to be a good reliever.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Refresh my memory on Nate, isn't he supposed to be out some of this upcoming season? What's his deal again? He may be out the first half coming back from TJ. When was his operation, again?
