  1. https://minorleaguemadhouse.com/2016/10/03/...season-edition/ Here is a mock done by a fiend and a collaborator at the subreddit. He has the Sox drafting Jordon Adell, who happens to be my favorite player in this draft class. Here is what Fangraphs had to say about him: Jordon Adell, OF, Ballard HS (KY) Height: 6’3, Weight: 200, Commitment: Louisville Jordon (or “Jo”) Adell has the best hit/power combination among high schoolers in the 2017 class and has a non-zero chance of playing center field. If that sounds like a player worthy of consideration in the draft’s top 5-10 picks, that’s because it is. But Adell is not predestined for center field. Though he has posted 70-grade run times in the 60-yard dash (6.47), I didn’t get an in-game run time to first base better than 4.4 (40 on the scale) from him all summer. Why the discrepancy? Well, the quality of Adell’s contact this summer was so good that it often didn’t necessitate a full-effort sprint to first base, and it’s possible I just never saw a good time to first. It’s also possible that, because of how hard Adell rotates toward the third-base line through contact, he just doesn’t get good jumps down the line toward first and his times are artificially slow. Scouts with whom I’ve spoken fall into two camps regarding Adell’s future position. Some think there’s a slight chance he somehow manages to be passable in center while acknowledging that it’s unlikely for him to stay there, while others think he surely ends up in a corner. I can’t find anyone confident he remains, long term, in center field and instead the industry (myself included) think Adell and his plus-plus arm end up in right field. It matters not. Adell’s bat profiles comfortably in a corner, too. He has 7 bat speed, can move the barrel around the zone and absolutely punishes everything on the inner half. While I think Adell’s approach can get pull-happy, he has the physical skills to be a future plus hitter. Adell peppered Waveland Ave with baseballs during the Under Armour home-run derby in Chicago then won the Area Code derby and homered in a game there as well. He has plus raw power and arguably projects for more than that. High-school prospects with that kind of offensive profile often go in the top 10, regardless of where they profile on the defensive spectrum. I think Adell comes off the board very early next June and I don’t expect his commitment to Louisville to be a significant obstacle.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:50 AM) Surely the White Sox should have learned something from the Ventura debacle...in terms of hiring someone with absolutely zero professional experience as a coach/manager. Likely the Tigers wouldn't have hired Ausmus with a do-over, and Mike Matheny's not exactly on firm ground in St. Louis, either. The bigger question is why do winning MLB organizations or Top Ten minor league organizations always hire someone with vast/extensive experience for the Dir. of Player Development positions with their organizations if it doesn't matter? Kaper does have previous managerial experience, both in the minors and WBC. A lot of top teams in baseball have hired young people to run departments in their baseball ops. Like the Rangers with Daniels and Preller, Oakland and the Dodgers with guys like Zaidi, Kapler and Forst, and the Astros with guys like Goldstein and Elias to name a few. Experience is not a guarantee of success.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) Gabe Kapler retired in 2012. he coached one year in the WBC for Team Israel. 1 year later he became the Director of Player Development for the Dodgers without any experience. He's super into analytics and nutrition and converted all of the prospect meals into gluten free stuff. Maybe Chris Getz is similar to Kapler where he has an actual "player development plan" that delves into nutrition, analytics and other factors. We have no idea. But assuming it's a s***ty hire because it's the White Sox is incredibly short-sighted and it's honestly b****ing just to b****. Thank you!
  4. I am very opposed to the idea of an international draft, I think the current system they have now is good but it needs to be regulated better.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:53 AM) Forgot a Nolan was in charge, all of the criticisms I've had make sense. Westworld Pitch Meeting Nolan: "And they are in a beautiful western set theme park where the priviledged kill and rape the robots, who are slaves to their storylines. But what if the robots gain consciousness? What if we wake up with them, what world will it be?" HBO Exec: "That's fantastic this is green lit, this is going to be so much fun!" Nolan: "Yeah! It's going to be just like reading a board game manual!" HBO Exec: " Wait, what?" One of my biggest complaints and likes about the show is the lack of exposition regarding the park and it's rules. So far the only straight exposition we've gotten has come from Logan when he tells William the how to of the park. The Man In Black has provided some but it's very cryptic. Kinda reminds me of the XFiles

  7. Regarding WestWorld and the pyramid. I think the top of the pyramid is the willingness to survive or someone's survival instinct. I think Delores has to be completely sentient and conscious, because she couldn't fire the gun with Teddy because as the tech said, only host with the appropriate narrative have the privilege to fire a gun/use a weapon. So when Delores is about to get raped, not only does she find the gun she is able to fire it. Her willingness to survive overrided her programming and that is very human. I'm fully on board with the theory that William is the Man In Black, 30yrs earlier. When we first see William, the camera fades in from black and he's waking up on the train, probably from the train. That's textbook on how to begin a flashback. The Man In Black did say that he's been coming to the park for 30yrs and we know that there was an accident, the death of Ford's partner (I believe). So I think we're seeing William the White Hat transform to the Man In Black. Jonathan Nolan did write the story that became Memento, so flashbacks aren't new to him or his family.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 07:58 AM) I think this is key right here. The two areas the org has seen real improvement - the draft (Hostetler) and re-opening the Intl pipeline (Paddy) - were both hires from fully OUTSIDE the org. That's not to say you can't ever promote from within or hire someone you know. But if you've been consistently underperforming for a long while in an area (like player development), you'd think they'd want to get someone from outside and with a lot of experience. They got someone from the outside that has experience, yes it's only 2 years but what's wrong with giving someone their shot? It's already been said here that people in the game speak highly of him.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:51 AM) Darin Erstad must be coming next as the "grindy" baserunning coach. Or Mark Kotsay... Mark Kotsay has major league coaching experience and Erstad is a successful college coach.
  10. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) This organization has lost the benefit of the doubt. So that's an excuse to act... irrationally?
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) Well that's a bit unfair, don't you think? I don't think it is but I definitely thinks this unfair to criticize a move and it's process, when you don't know the happenings behind the scenes. If you think this is a bad move, please name me someone who you would like instead.
  12. While he is a former Sox player, he has experience outside org and is definitely new blood for the org. If you can name a better person for the job, please do.
  13. Saw La La Land last night and it's instantly one of my all time favorite movies. I'm a big fan of musicals, movies with elaborate sets and costumes and my mom and sisters are all lifelong dancers, needless to say that I was in heaven. When I heard that the film was going to be a modern day and realistic take of song dance movies, I was excited but kind of skeptical but this film really pulled it over, while avoiding every possible cliche. The movie is a love story but its more about the role that love plays in the lives of people who are 'going for it'. And it ask if you can have have love in the pursuit of accomplishing your greatest dreams and desires. There are some really memorials scenes and numbers but my personal favorite was the one where Emma Stone and her roommates get ready to go out. The cinematography was amazing with an awesome color palette. It's no secret that Emma Stone is super pale, so I love that she was always in dark spaces and wearing colors that popped on her and played well on her complexion. The costumes were all sharp and had a lot of detail, from the dresses to the suits. The editing was great too, I don't know how they edited the opening number, I get a headache think I about it. Also it was shot on film, so bonus points. I'm a big, big fan of Ryan Gosling but it always bothered me that he shies away from 'typical leading man' type career moves, hopefully with this and the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, he starts to embrace that leading man status. People were talking about the film's Oscar chances and a lot of people brought him up. He was really great in the film and probably his best work. I think Damien Chazelle is making a Neil Armstrong biopic next, I love that each project of his is so radically different from the last.
  14. I like that McEwing is back, people speak very highly of him and to have him in a bigger role should make the Sox better in the dugout. Was hoping for new blood from outside the org but I'll take it.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 14, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) This organization is a joke I think Severson is a good hitting coach. Look at what he's had to work with and look at how better guys in the minors are doing.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 20, 2016 -> 06:01 AM) My Chinese hs students are smart enough to like Deadpool a helluva lot more than SS. Warcraft, that's because of the popularity of the game. Pacific Rim, that's another story. I don't get what point you're trying to make. Suicide Squad easily crosses a billion dollars if it was in China. My point was it is the biggest hit of the summer, not in terms of dollar but in longevity and it's still playing in theaters. I wouldn't say that Deadpool is better than SS or that SS is better than Deadpool, I have similar opinions on both films.
  17. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 20, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) This looks pretty good: I can not watch this trailer and not feel bad for Keanu Reeves.
  18. I saw The Accountant last night and holy s*** it was great. I would describe it as a more action packed, more traditional and less stylized Drive. Some of the best action scene that I have seen in a while and Ben Affleck gives a great performance as the autistic Accountant. It's cool seeing Commissioner Gordon go after the Batman for once. I don't know if it's top ten but it's definitely top fifteen movies of the year for me. ********************** It turns out Devin Faraci has sexually assaulted some women and has stepped down from his post of EIC at Birth Movies Death. He wrote an article earlier this year, accusing a certain filmmaker of being a myisognist and hater of all things feminine. The irony. ********************** Come see me at the film festival doing stuff. You can see La La Land 2 months early.
  19. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 10, 2016 -> 01:34 AM) You mean from the movie? That would be cool. Not to get in to details of episode 2 yet, but I really do enjoy Jimmie Simpson. He was really good in Breakout Kings and always reminds me of a young James Spader. Not from the movie. I meant the original guest in the show, he was the first person to attend/test the park. Really want to know about his life outside the park.
  20. I love how WestWorld took the two characters from the original film and brought them into the show. I loved the scene with William and the host in the dressing room (the actress playing that host was Tom Hardy's female gambit in Inception, another Nolan project) and the concept of white and black hats, very cool stuff. Reminds me of role playing games. Loved the line about being able to real the difference between the guest and host, real Blade Runner stuff.
  21. I love that Cooper calls out the fans, it shows that he cares about the org.
  22. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Oct 7, 2016 -> 12:17 PM) This list doesn't look too good, but you never know. Sale was picked 13th after all. Hopefully the Sox target a bat with their first pick if at all possible. No, I hope it's the best player available.
  23. WestWorld is amazing. I love how Dolores reacts to the fly, you can see it in her eyes and her face when the fly lands on her. The Man in Black is an amazing character, I think he was the original guest at the park.
  24. I want them to take their time with Collins but I think they have to move him from behind the plate and just focus on the bat
