  1. Correct. So in a way JR's "fiscal responsibility" philosophy was in part responsible for this situation.
  2. One could make the same claim if they executed a successful bunt though couldn't they (i.e. winning the game on "one swing")? Lay down a bunt, the opponent throws it away, kicks it, fumbles it and a run scores. Not saying bunting is the best approach especially with guys who have no idea how to do it, but it's possible to win the game with it just as it is possible to win the game by swinging away.
  3. I've met JR twice and I've said for years that he wants to win. But... He has ALWAYS wanted to win HIS WAY...with his ideas about salary structure, his ideas about dealing with certain agents (or not dealing with them), his ideas on the MLBPA, his ideas on paying for "potential" (involving the draft and the minor league system), his ideas about dealing with the media/fan base (which involves the always important public relations battle) and his ideas about "loyalty" just to name a few areas. History shows in over 40+ years of ownership his way of wanting to win hasn't been very successful especially since the start of the 2007 season with only five winning years.
  4. July 7, 1931 - In a 12-inning game won by the White Sox over the Browns in St. Louis, 10-8, neither team struck out. It remains the longest game ever played in the big leagues without a hitter fanning. The Sox led 8-7 going into the ninth inning but couldn’t hold it as pinch hitter Chad Kimsey, normally a pitcher, homered to tie the game at eight. Kimsey was on the mound when the Sox scored twice in the 12th inning, helped in part by a key error and he took the loss. He’d be acquired by the Sox on waivers from the Browns and pitch for the club late in the 1932 and all of the 1933 seasons before he was traded to Montreal of the International League. July 7, 1959 - Sox pitcher Early Wynn started the first of the two All-Star Games played that season. This one was in Pittsburgh. Wynn, who’d go on to take the Cy Young Award that season, and win 22 games, went three innings allowing one run. He didn’t get a decision in the N.L.’s 5-4 win. Other Sox representatives in the game included Luis Aparicio (SS), Nellie Fox (2B), Sherm Lollar (C) and Billy Pierce (P). Fox and Aparicio joined Wynn in the starting lineup. July 7, 1964 – White Sox manager Al Lopez, in charge of the A.L. All-Stars saw a former player ruin his afternoon. Johnny Callison, once a top Sox prospect, traded to the Phillies before the start of the 1960 season, belted a three-run home run in the last of the ninth to win the game for the N.L. 7-4 at Shea Stadium in New York. The home run came off the Red Sox Dick “the Monster” Radatz and was the key blow in the four-run inning. The Sox quickly realized what they traded away and tried to get Callison back before the start of the 1962 season without success. Joining Lopez and coach Don Gutteridge from the Sox on the team were pitchers Gary Peters and Juan Pizarro. July 7, 1982 - It was the coming out party for Sox outfielder Harold Baines. In a game in Chicago against the Tigers, Baines blasted three home runs in the Sox 7-0 win. One of his blasts was a grand slam. He’d drive in six of the Sox seven runs. His homers came in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Later that week at Toronto in a 16-7 win, he’d hammer two more home runs including a second grand slam and knock in five more RBI’s. No wonder he was named A.L. Player of the Week! July 7, 2009 - On the same date that Harold Baines clubbed three home runs in a game in 1982, Sox first baseman Paul Konerko launched three in a 10-6 win over Cleveland at U.S. Cellular Field. Konerko had a solo home run, a two-run shot and a grand slam in his finest performance in a White Sox uniform. He went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and those seven RBI’s. He became the 12th player in franchise history to drill three home runs in a game and the 13th to hit at least three. He also became the first Sox player to ever hit three in a game at what was then called U.S. Cellular Field.
  5. But he IS responsible for allowing the incompetence, dysfunction and ineptness of the baseball side of the operation to continue for years because he is making a boatload of money.
  6. https://www.southsidesox.com/2023/7/7/23785371/2023-south-side-sox-value-survey-luis-robert-jr-leads-the-way-as-the-best-chicago-white-sox-value
  7. They'll sign some broken down has been's to fill out the roster for next year. They are going to be just as bad or worse in 2024 so it really won't matter. Only thing that potentially changes that is if JR is no longer the owner.
  8. DVS tonight: "These are difficult times for the Sox front office, which is not in an enviable position as it come to grips with a failed rebuild that produced nothing more than a Wild Card, a division title and 0-for-2 in postseasons." Like Nightengale said on Garfein's latest Podcast, "This is the shortest contention window in history, just two years." ?
  9. According to DVS of the Sun-Times: Mike Monaco of ESPN filled in for play-by-play voice Jason Benetti on the NBC Sports Chicago broadcast and will also fill in Saturday for Benetti, who is taking time off.
  10. From one of six sources I spoke with this past off season. Posted a story called "The State of the Sox" on November 1. My sources were able individuals who had professional associations with the Sox sometimes lasting decades.
  11. Remember Jason was none to pleased with the way the Sox were screwing him around on his contract this past winter. “Jason Benetti’s deal with the Sox is up, the Sox hold the option for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He went to Fox to negotiate that deal with them after he was told to do it and then come back to the Sox and they’d work something out. Jason wanted to get the deal done with the Sox first and then go to Fox or ESPN or whoever. Turns out when he came back to the Sox and said that he needs 40 days off so he can do the Fox work he was told, ‘no, that’s not happening.’ So I don’t know what’s going to happen to him or Steve Stone.”
  12. "Let me have what he's drinking I want to get loaded too..." - Ralph Kramden.
  13. Good. Let them lose another 10 of 12 so there is no doubt that these clowns get shipped out. (Of course if you believe Nightengale that's EXACTLY what some of these guys want...)
  14. Don't think that'll happen not enough games left but it wouldn't hurt my feelings. And yes it's only 12 innings but he never even put that together since he came over last July with the Sox did he?
  15. The Whitesox.com injury report says he won't be back until August and Hahn didn't mention him at all on Tuesday for whatever that's worth. c
  16. Crochet. Doesn't bother me that Kelly is on the IL save for blowing trade chances. But..... The injury epidemic continues unabated for the "first rate" Sox medical, training and conditioning staffs. ?
  17. Also let's not forget he's in his mid 30's now. He's no spring chicken.
  18. July 6, 1933 - The first ever All-Star Game was played at Comiskey Park. The Sox won a coin flip with the Cubs for the right to host the game that was the idea of Chicago Tribune sports editor “Arch” Ward. It was played in connection with the Chicago World’s Fair which started in May along the lakefront. The A.L. won the game 4-2 thanks to a home run by “Babe” Ruth in the third inning off of Bill Hallahan. The Sox representatives in that first game were Jimmy Dykes (3B) and Al Simmons (OF). Dykes who’d later go on to manger the team, scored the first ever All-Star run. July 6, 1954 - Virgil “Fire” Trucks threw a one-hitter at Detroit beating the Tigers 4-0. It would be the second one-hitter thrown by Trucks in a little over two months. On May 1 he beat Boston at Fenway Park, 3-0 with a one-hitter. In this game the only hit he allowed came in the third inning when Harvey Kuenn singled to center. He’d strike out eight in the game. For the season Trucks would go 19-12 with an ERA of 2.79 and he’d save the All-Star game in Cleveland for the American League. July 6, 1983 - The Golden Anniversary All-Star Game was held at Comiskey Park which hosted for the third time. The A.L. mangled the N.L.13-3 stopping their 11-game losing streak. Chicago native Fred Lynn, of the Angels, got the game’s first ever grand slam, off the Giants Atlee Hammaker who’d later go on to pitch for the Sox. Ron Kittle (OF), who’d go on to win the Rookie of the Year Award, got an infield single in the game in the seventh inning and score a run. He was the Sox lone representative. July 6, 1999 - Chris Singleton became the first Sox rookie to ever hit for the cycle when he turned the trick against Kansas City. The Sox would lose the game however, 8-7 in 10 innings. Chris went 5 for 6 with three runs scored and four RBI’s. Singleton would later go on to be a Sox broadcaster for a short period of time. July 6, 2007 - The Minnesota Twins scored 32 runs and hammered eight home runs in a day/night twin bill at U.S. Cellular Field winning 20-14 and 12-0. It was a low point for a franchise that was World Series champions less than two years earlier. Jon Garland and Gavin Floyd took the losses. July 6, 2021 - The unbelievable injury run continued to plague the White Sox. Catcher Yasmani Grandal became the 15th different player and fourth key starter to go on the disabled list for the club with only a little more than half the season played. He was diagnosed with a torn tendon in his left knee suffered the night before in Minnesota on a checked swing. A few days earlier in Detroit he took himself out of the game with a tight calf muscle in the same leg. At the time he was among the club leaders in home runs, on-base percentage and among the league leaders in walks. After a stint on the IL he came back to put up impressive numbers finishing the season with 23 home runs and 62 RBI’s. In a game against the Cubs on August 27 he’d tie the team record driving in eight runs in the Sox 17-13 win. July 6, 2021 – Later that same night with the Sox needing something positive, pitcher Carlos Rodon, having an All-Star season, gave it to them. The left hander kept the Twins in check for six innings allowing one run, striking out eight as the Sox got a badly needed win 4-1. With the eight strikeouts Rodon tied a club record first set by Juan Pizarro back in 1961, with eight or more strikeouts in nine straight starts.
  19. Because who needs a good closer when you aren't going to have many late leads in the 2024 season.
  20. Nightengale also specifically said that Hendriks wouldn't be traded next year either and that the Sox would pick up his fourth year option for what its worth. (Again consider the source) Again because JR likes him. ?
  21. It's not just the pitching coach that doesn't know what they are doing with the Sox staff. And if you go back to the thread where he was released you'll see where I stated it would be just like the White Sox that Tampa turns him around he becomes effective.
  22. No media member is their right mind would ask your question using the words you stated. They could ask it this way, "Rick the rebuild hasn't turned out like anyone hoped. Why should Sox fans believe the current front office can turn this situation around? Why should they continue to give the front office the benefit of the doubt?"
  23. According to the injury report at White Sox.com a few days ago, Moncada is not expected back before August. I've learned very quickly that Grifol like Rick Hahn knowns nothing about injuries and expected returns. Anytime they talk they are guessing. If the Sox had any sense, instead of these idiots trying to answer medical questions, they'd drag out the doctors and trainers to speak with the media directly without any BS.
  24. I haven't lost any sleep over the glorified popularity contest All-Star Game in decades. As far as I'm concerned can it and give the players the week off (like they are now doing in the NBA, a week off during the season) If you want me to care again, fans no longer have a vote period or if they do they are only allowed one vote and not every team must be represented. Personally I'm in favor of putting all stats into a computer and have them rank the qualified candidates by position. Top two infielders at each spot go, top six outfielders go, top two catchers go, top two DH's go. Top five starting pitchers go, top five relief pitchers go. 28 players total for each league.
  25. With the White Sox luck his swing will get screwed up big time for a farce exhibition.
