  1. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 11:01 PM) Sell Jerry so Sox fans can have some real hope! That's everyone's hope but it's not happening and part of the reason as I saw elsewhere is capital gains taxes unless the original owner passed away. Mark
  2. Folks: Get ready for a very long, cold, never ending winter. Mark
  3. QUOTE (Doc Edwards Shot @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 12:57 PM) Aren't the Cubs about as rich as the Dodgers/Yankees/Red Sox? Seems to me they could afford to keep a lot of their current players even when they come knocking for new contracts. Just wait till they start their TV network, that figures to bring in a lot of money. Mark
  4. Didn't ever realize this guy was still around. It wouldn't hurt I guess since he hasn't succeeded at anything else in the organization. Mark
  5. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Nov 1, 2016 -> 10:39 PM) I hope we're not just waiting for JR to hand over controlling interest/die before these changes come.......but I really wonder if that's what it would take if come 2017 nothing changes. If you do not rebuild with a GM acknowledging their mediocrity, a subpar team in a terrible FA market, with no immediate help available in the minors, AND several appealing SP trading chips to rebuild from, then they will never rebuild under JR. Things change of course, maybe a Cub World Series championship will totally change the equation. We'll see. But I can only say that the last I had heard from two sources (and posted that on this site) JR does not want to go through a rebuild. Since he's the owner what he wants, he gets. I don't think Rick Hahn has much influence if any with JR...the one person who I think could cause JR to give serious thought to a radical change is Kenny Williams. Kenny is JR's "Rasputen" the two are almost like brothers...if Kenny said "it's time" JR might just might listen. The problem with that scenario is of course Kenny has never admitted failure in his life, it's the ego and football mentally, we've got to "go for it" each and every season. Short term thinking...nothing long term. Again we'll just have to wait and see. Mark
  6. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Nov 1, 2016 -> 09:43 PM) If anything, I'd hope any potential Cubs World Series tears apart that last remaining doubt of Sox management about rebuilding. I would agree with your thought process if I didn't have 35 years history contradicting it. The Sox have never felt they are in competition with the Cubs, have stated it publicly many time. JR (and for right or wrong you have to admire the strength of his convictions) has never been influenced by the Cubs, Sox fans, the media, agents...never has and never will be. Significant and needed change will come eventually, it has to since time marches on and we are all human. Mark
  7. If the Cubs win it tomorrow night their already insufferable fan base will become even more so (if that is indeed even possible), the media which is already pro-Cubs have even more incentive (since fairness is no longer a part of the equation) to basically ignore the Sox save for the bare minimum of coverage. The White Sox and Sox fans will be having this shoved in their faces for the next 100 years. 2005 will basically no longer exist save for the Sox fans who remain (it was already forgotten about by the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, ESPN and CBS just last week...) Am I exaggerating? Probably....but here's the thing...I'm not exaggerating by much. I'm glad I don't live in Chicago but even here in Idaho it is amazing how many Cub fans there are. I've been hearing and putting up with garbage for a month. When I ask them (they are from Utah / Idaho / Texas / Wisconsin) how they became Cub fans, I get the same answer...SUPERSTATION WGN. Mark
  8. October 28, 2005 – It was the largest turnout for a championship celebration in Chicago sports history as nearly two million people lined the parade route in the downtown area / South Side to honor the World Series champions. White Sox players and management addressed the crowd and Paul Konerko presented the last out / game ball to owner Jerry Reinsdorf. We've got some audio from the celebration with comments by Paul Konerko, Jerry Reinsdorf, Ozzie Guillen and Hawk Harrelson http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2016/10/t...ox-on-parade-2/ And with that we conclude our This Day in White Sox History thread. I hope everyone enjoyed it and that it brought back some good memories. I also want to thank Dan Shapiro for his help without which this thread simply couldn't have been done. Mark
  9. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Oct 29, 2016 -> 08:35 AM) Assuming Ramos doesn't take a 1-year pillow deal with the Nats, I'd like to try to sign him to one. Even though he's not going to be able to play until May / June? Mark
  10. QUOTE (drowninginflame @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 04:35 PM) Hey folks, Long time lurker. This is the place I go to get all of my White Sox gossip and opinions, so keep up the awesome work. Anyhow, I'm a writer and I just wrote an essay about being a White Sox fan during this whole Cubsmania ordeal. I originally pitched to Sports Mockery but have yet to hear back, despite them posting a plenty of Cubs-related pieces. I reached out to Deadspin and am waiting on them, too. But, I'd love to get the piece some traction on a White Sox blog, Facebook page, etc. If you know of any you enjoy, or look to as a source of truth, or run one - please let me know. Thanks! Try Sox Net that's the one I write for. You need to contact Q, who is basically the "editor" of it. I'd give you his e-mail address but I don't know if that is allowed. If one of the mod's can let me know on this I'd appreciate it. If they say it is OK, I'll post it for you. Mark
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 12:48 PM) We're "All IN" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark
  12. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 11:54 AM) This is the reason why we hate the Cubs and their following. http://imgur.com/a/PNGwY The left magazine cover is from three weeks ago. They devoted the cover to a columnist awarding the Cubs the World Series championship. The right magazine cover is the first official cover (outside of Chicago) announcing that the Sox won the World Series. They gave the Sox a tiny corner of the cover and gave the NFL the bigger story. One of my biggest pet peeves. I write S.I. every year after they put the team on the cover that won the World Series to remind them about it and ask what the justification was since Brady / Manning was a REGULAR SEASON game. Mark
  13. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 10:12 PM) Please post them if you can!! Go to my This Date in White Sox History thread. Have most of them there. Mark
  14. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Oct 28, 2016 -> 12:20 AM) Well the two teams have two different budgets, the Cubs have a budget on par with the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals. The Sox have a mid tier budget. The Cardinals though despite having a new regional mega TV deal and one of the best fan bases in baseball don't have a major or extremely high budget. I've never understood that myself but that's how they operate. Mark
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 10:03 PM) Get rid of Lawrie and play Saladino. acquire a GOOD catcher and GOOD reliever: in blockbuster trade; make it happen Mr. Hahn and we are a contender. Give up minor league talent for a good catcher and good reliever. 1. Saladino has a herniated disc in his lower back. Right now its an open question if he'll be able to play next season. 2. "Good" catchers are scarcer then hen's teeth, the price to get one may be overwhelming if any are even available. Mark
  16. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 04:24 PM) I would say Avi has a much higher than a small chance at being non-tendered. I would say 80%. I sincerely hope you are right. Mark
  17. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 06:36 PM) Big Game Shields just might surprise us in 2017 He may...he might only lose 15 games instead of 18 or so! Mark
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 12:40 PM) 180 IP of 4.80 ERA is all the Sox can ask for from Shields. If they can give him that, he's worth his deal. I guess pitching is scarcer then even I thought if these numbers make him "worth" anything. Mark
  19. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 11:05 AM) All I want is for the love of god to pick a side. Either blow the WHOLE thing up or crack open the piggy bank. No more scrap heap lottery tickets. But saying all that, I don't really trust this organization to do either path correctly so it's going to take a miracle for this team to not be a garbage fire until there is a new owner. Agreed. Mark
  20. Would be nice to see the Sox win something in the post season. Mark
  21. History shows that from 1951 through 1967 the Sox outdrew the Cubs in 16 of the 17 seasons. Chicago was absolutely not a "Cubs town" during that time period. As someone who spent months researching and interview folks (including players) from that time period for my long two part historical piece called "Sox and the Media" I can tell you the Sox also got the lion's share of media coverage during that time period as well. The reasons were pretty simple, the Sox had winning seasons, they were usually contending for a pennant and they had nationally known and recognized star players. The Cubs had Ernie Banks, the "College of Coaches" and losing seasons. It's really not that hard to understand. Mark
  22. October 26, 2005 - On this night the Sox became World Series champions for the first time since 1917 in Houston. Freddy Garcia and three relief pitchers shut out the Astros on five hits 1-0 sweeping the best of seven series four games to none. The Sox shut out Houston for the final 15 innings in series play. Outfielder Jermaine Dye drove in the game’s only run and was named the M.V.P. of the series. The South Side of Chicago exploded in an orgy of delight as fans celebrated all over the area. We've got the audio AND video of the final out capping a season to remember. Announcer: Joe Buck. Courtesy: Fox Sports. http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2016/10/t...ox-win-sox-win/ Mark
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 09:32 AM) The only guy that comes to mind as paying for his own stadium is Jerry Jones, and even that was only 2/3 of it. Arlington paid for the other 1/3. Am I missing someone? I mean it is cute and all to build this myth of a benevolent prince owner who is going to rescue us from our castle stadium and whisk us away to live happily ever after build us a new palace on the lake, but then real life calls. That doesn't actually happen anywhere. Billionaires get to be billionaires by being business savvy and having other people pay for things like a new stadium. The Giants baseball stadium was built and paid for by then owner Peter McGowen if I'm not mistaken and the Dophins football stadium was built by Joe Robbie with his money. Again this is from memory. Those are the only two that I can recall as being built and paid for by ownership. Mark
