  1. Destiny's children friends and neighbors. Oh by the way, this is at least the sixth time, the sixth time since September 1 the Giants took a lead into the 9th inning and lost the game. Their bullpen is worse than the Sox. If Washington wins Thursday I'd feel better about their chances if Strasburg and Ramos were healthy. Giants could have won game #1 if not for Posey's base running blunder and they should have won game #4 but to me the biggest mistake was running Shark out there to start game #2 at Wrigley. There was no way that stiff was going to do well under those circumstances. Mark
  2. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 11, 2016 -> 06:09 PM) That team on paper has to be the best team in franchise history. How they only managed to win 86 games is pretty amazing. Not even close to being on paper the best team in franchise history. And the reason they won only 86 games was because these were the guys the Sox used that year in the back end of the rotation: Dan Wright, 15 games started, 1-7, 6.15 ERA Josh Stewart, 5 games started, 1-2, 5.96 ERA Mike Porzio, 3 games started, 1-1, 6.43 ERA Neal Cotts, 4 games started, 1-1, 8.10 ERA This was the season where Kenny Rogers was a free agent and the Sox were interested in him but when he asked for one million dollars to pitch for them, Kenny thought that was to much and said no. Rogers signed with the Twins, went 13-8, threw 195 innings and I think was the pitcher of record the night Minnesota clinched the division in Chicago. Mark
  3. QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Oct 9, 2016 -> 10:14 PM) There will be many suitors for both guys, Sox should be able to get a nice haul for each guy. Unless of course the Sox "go for it" again and at this point I'd be very surprised if they didn't. JR is not willing to wait five years during a rebuild and last I looked he still owns the team. Mark
  4. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Oct 9, 2016 -> 11:34 PM) I love that Cooper calls out the fans, it shows that he cares about the org. Business 101 says it's never wise to rip on the people paying the freight. Mark
  5. QUOTE (Reddy @ Oct 8, 2016 -> 06:05 PM) Personally I don't think the Sox's problem is superstars. We've got enough of those. Our problem is that below the elite tier, we have NOTHING. Our regulars who aren't stars are practically sub-replacement-level. Where our money needs to be invested is not more older, expensive superstars, but in developing the damn farm, drafting well, and signing decent mid tier guys. I know that's what we've tried to do a lot of, but they keep failing. Is it our scouting dept? I dunno. But whatever it is it needs to get fixed, because we'll never win just by throwing more big money for another superstar, if it means another year of 5 replacement level bats in the lineup. I think you are pretty much on target here. The top seven or eight Sox guys can stack up to most other teams but what absolutely kills them is the crap they run out there at the other positions and when a guy goes down say a mediocre player like Austin Jackson they can't even replace that. The bench is brutal and they have no one on the farm it seems who can come up and help out when a mediocre player goes down...he's just replaced by another minor league mediocre player if that. Yet the Sox have supposedly been developing the farm for the last several years. It's not rock bottom bad anymore but it's still not ready to prdice talent in quantity. How in the hell long does it take and why can other teams seemingly do it overnight (relatively speaking) and the Sox keep spinning their wheels acting like the Keystone Kops? I'll wait for an answer from Buddy Bell for that one! LOL. Mark
  6. QUOTE (Scoots @ Oct 8, 2016 -> 09:52 PM) Jeff Samardzija is so overrated and overpaid. Didn't make it through 3 innings against the cubs...his shortest start ever and his first postseason start. In other words he did exactly what he did in his short stay with the Sox. Mark
  7. QUOTE (Sockin @ Oct 7, 2016 -> 04:00 PM) Buried in Heyman's notes from today is the Sox have offered an extension to Cooper. http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/inside-ba...b-playoff-teams No surprise, he's here as long as JR owns the team (as is most if not all of the front office...) Mark
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 7, 2016 -> 03:29 PM) Wasn't Flowers also terrible throwing out runners this year? He's had trouble for the last few years throwing guys out in addition to the high number of passed balls. He's bad, period. Don't even want the Sox to consider ever bringing him back. Mark
  9. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Oct 7, 2016 -> 11:44 AM) These are just terrific, Lip. Thanks for making the effort to bring these clips to the forum. Always great to go back in time and hear the voices of Sox baseball from years gone by. I really enjoyed Joe McConnell myself, and so it's always nice to get a chance to hear his voice describing an exciting Sox moment from the past. No worries. Glad you enjoy them. Still have a few more weeks of audio clips before calling it a year. Mark
  10. It's October 6, 1959 the Sox are playing the Dodgers in a football stadium transformed to play baseball games in, the L.A. Coliseum. L.A. is a game away from winning the World Series and has Sandy Koufax on the mound. But the Sox stayed alive winning 1-0 in Game #5. The game was saved by a spectacular catch from "Jungle" Jim Rivera in the 7th inning. Rivera made an over the shoulder catch on a blast hit by Charlie Neal with two men on, looking into a murderous background of white shirts. It was one of the greatest catches in World Series history. It's Mel Allen on the call, courtesy: NBC Radio Network. http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2016/10/t...against-koufax/ Mark
  11. October 5, 1983 - The White Sox are in the playoffs for the first time in 24 years and open the A.L.C.S. in Baltimore beating the Birds 2-1 behind the brilliant pitching from LaMarr Hoyt. Hoyt went the distance on a five hitter and nearly had himself a shutout save for a soft bloop hit by Cal Ripken in the 9th inning. We've got the final out as Hoyt retired Eddie Murray to get the win. Announcer is Joe McConnell. Courtesy: WMAQ Radio. http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2016/10/t...yts-brilliance/ Mark
  12. Sox get a second chance...we'll see what happens. Mark
  13. Good start but I wish he was outright released. To much temptation if he is still around to bring this stiff back up to pitch terribly in 2017. Mark
  14. QUOTE (Deadpool @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 09:26 PM) Hahn admitted this morning going for it every year isn't working and free agent additions haven't lead to winning. Even if they don't completely blow it up, they're going to do closer to that then "go for it" Maybe...anything's possible. But Kenny Hahn would have to do a tremendous selling job on JR to change his mind. That's not easy but again we'll see. Mark
  15. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 11:56 AM) Frazier hit 40 homers, 21 doubles, and drove in 98 runs. How is that not a legit #4 or #5 hitter? Another thing to consider is who plays 3B if Frazier is allowed to walk after next season. The Sox would have to address that before they parted ways with him. If the Sox though do go into a full rebuild mode it really won't matter for a few years anyway. Mark
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) The big thing I am going to take away from this season is Tyler Saladino, Tim Anderson, and Miguel Gonzalez. While on the surface it isn't much, what it does show is that the White Sox are producing starting caliber position players that they are drafting and developing out of their farm system. You can also include guys like Marcus Semien and Tracye Thompson if you like, but at the end of the day what it means is that the combination of Hoestetler and Bell are indeed capable of not only finding talent, but in giving it the tools to get the major leagues and contribute. It is also showing that the Sox still have the golden touch when it comes to pitching. I am also going to take away Marco Paddy. While he was hired in November 2011, because of the nature of his job the results of his work are finally starting to show. He signed his first class of 16 year olds for the White Sox in July of 2012. He now has kids moving into the middle tiers of our minor league system. The lower levels are loaded with Latin American talent. Our FutureSox top prospect lists are filling up with products of Marco Paddy's work. Somewhere around half of the Arizona rookie team's roster this year is a direct result of this. Personally those are the two biggest things I am going to take away from this season, because they are going to be cornerstones of the future of this squad. Your points are well taken although Saladino with the herniated disc in his lower back now has to be considered a real question mark moving forward even if the don't have to do surgery which is being discussed since Robin said he hadn't responded as well as hoped to treatment. Mark
  17. I found this comment from Rick interesting when reading the recap story of the press conference today: "You saw this last offseason -- at the end -- we made a couple of smaller moves as a means of trying to plug our holes, some of which panned out better than others," Hahn said. "If we were a little more aggressive, perhaps, from a standpoint of a full measure as opposed to arguably a half-measure in a certain scenario, then conceivably, the results would have been different." Mark
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) On the downside apparently nothing good happened this season. This game is a "bottom-line" business. The bottom line is the won/lost record. So while there were some fine individual performances the team / organization as a whole failed once again to even have a winning season. As stated that's four years in a row and seven out of the last 10. Generally speaking with that track record over a good period of time, good individual performances while nice are meaningless to me by and large. Feel free to put together a list of all the positive things if you wish. Every year, good or bad, I stick to the categories that I posted because I personally think they are relevant and important. And I hope you noticed I did post the number of times and the breakdown of games the Sox came from behind to win when trailing in the 7th inning or later. Mark
  19. One of the columnists at the Tribune had this to say this morning and it's also a valid point in my opinion: "The onus is now on Hahn, the architect of this mess. And fortunately for Renteria, Hahn will make sure pitching coach for life Don Cooper is calling the shots on the pitching side. Despite fine seasons by Sale and Jose Quintana, the Sox are 14th in the majors in pitching this year, just as they were last year. They were 20th in 2013, and 27th in 2014. Cooper has never been on the hot seat, for reasons unknown. Sox fans deserve better. They've put up with a lot of nonsense the last few years, and no one seems to take responsibility." Mark
  20. Now that it's official I really like the fact that the Sox have finally hired a guy who had managed before at the major league level. I think that's important. And he took a Cubs team that was trying to tank and they had a winning record after the All Star break if I remember correctly. What I don't like is that the Sox did not conduct a real search, it's clear they had already decided on Renteria weeks ago. Waiting a week or 10 days, you never know who might become available. I also think that even though he has only been there a short time, I don't like the fact that the Sox yet again, stayed in the "family"...no outsiders permitted. What they desperately need are outside viewpoints, fresh looks at the issues facing them. And of course will Renteria be allowed to pick his own coaches? Probably not all of them. We'll see what the off season brings. Overall I think Renteria is an improvement over Ventura but not as much as I was hoping for. Mark
  21. Off season plan? Lots and lots of praying. Mark
  22. Wish Robin and his family well. It wasn't totally his fault but he was a large part of the issue. There were many, many questionable decisions over the years including of course bringing in Duke in Milwaukee before the Brewers officially announced their pinch hitter who was just standing in the on-deck circle and hadn't been brought in. Robin had to be talked into the job and he tried his best but it was a position he was neither ready for nor really knowledgable about. Doesn't take away from the fact that he tried, respected the game, respected White Sox fans and never embarrassed the organization. It was time for a change, probably past time. Mark
  23. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 2, 2016 -> 08:42 PM) Bulls***. There are many more Cubs fans due to the way the Cubs marketed their team as opposed to the way Einhorn and Reinsdorf marketed the Sox over the past few decades. But Sox fans are just as loyal and support their team as well as any other fans. It's just that there's not as many of us. One example, how many out of town visitors to Chicago make a point of attending a Sox game as opposed to visiting Wrigley Field? If JR and Co. want to increase attendence perhaps they should try to create more White Sox fans. Well making the playoffs more than once every seven or eight years (if we are lucky) would go a long way towards developing that aspect. Mark
  24. QUOTE (hi8is @ Oct 2, 2016 -> 03:07 PM) Report just out that the Commissioner offered Boston the option to undo their trade with San Diego in August. Wonder why the same opportunity wasn't afforded to the White Sox regarding Shields. Good question. Mark
  25. MLB has already shot down those reports. Looks like we are still stuck with him. "We'll get it together" - Kenny Williams July 2016. Mark
