QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 02:36 PM) I dunno man. How good would he be without Daddy Warbux giving him tons of money to spend? Sure you can point to a few trades he won but Kenny/Rick have won their share of trades too. Dave built and sustained the Montreal farm system which was considered among the best or the best in baseball for years. He's exactly what the Sox need to take over completely the minor league operations. Mark

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/mlb/477...dave-dombrowski Reinsdorf should already be on the phone - this guy is one of the best in baseball, and he was roland Hemond's protege many year ago, before Hawk talked his way into the GM job. Dombrowski's credentials are the best. Detroit firing this guy is flat out insane. And I agree, JR should already be talking to him about coming back on board this winter. When Hawk fired him, JR allowed him to stay on the Sox benefits package until he could find another position so the two parted well. Mark

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 08:07 AM) This is right. Send Avi down. He has no bench value either if he can't defend or hit. Garcia simply hasn't been the same player since he hurt that knee in Oakland. He was off to a very good start. You wonder if something is still wrong with it. Mark

Nick Hostetler Promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting

QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 09:10 PM) during that whole time, i was recovering from a illness, what was, not the official line, but reason for raines being fired??? Supposedly Tim wasn't working hard enough to suit Ozzie. Mark -

QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 05:30 AM) let me asked this of those who can answer. to me, i always assumed that the sox picked, esp in the 1 round, prospects who were easy to sign and can make the majors quickly, as oppose to players who were more talented. was that how any saw it??? I can't say with 100% accuracy but there was strong peripheral evidence the Sox used signability and who the players agent was as part of the decision making process. Mark -
Sox have now lost eight games where they took a lead into the 7th inning or later. Worst loss of the year was Sale in Tampa after he struck out like 14 guys. Mark

The Sox have lost every game they've played with Tampa this year. A good team wins three out of the four...then you have the White Sox. Mark

Nick Hostetler Promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 05:16 PM) Tim Raines is the one name that comes to mind of former Sox stars to be fired. And Raines was fired by Ozzie. Kenny also tried to fire Ozzie but JR over ruled him (perhaps remembering his decision to let Hawk fire Tony LaRussa.) Mark -
I don't think Beane was deliberately trying to screw over the Sox, it's just the way he works. He'll either get something for Valencia at the waiver deadline or package him as part of a deal over the winter. Mark

Nick Hostetler Promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting

For what it's worth, I was tipped off about something along these lines a few months ago. The person I heard from said Rick started to listen more and more to Hostetler at the expense of Laumann. The person that I was in touch with felt Laumann was actually better at his job than Hostetler. We'll see how it work out. One thing is clear...over the last 15 years the Sox have had a number of people in charge of amateur scouting and minor league operations. In my opinion that's part of the reason the minor league system is in the shape its been in. Mark -
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 10:06 PM) Got it. Now at least we know where your argument starts and ends. 2015 = 2009 = 2006 = 2003 = 2001 = 1997 = 1992 = 1987 = 1984 = 1980 = 1976...so on and so forth. The team's results clearly don't matter to you, because you enjoy the White Sox no matter how they do. Alright, that's good for you, I guess, if winning is just something "nice" for you. Some by-product that if it happens, it happens, if it doesn't, oh well, it doesn't. Fine, I respect that. Just be respectful of those - and there are many of us, btw - who aim for something a little bit more than that. Not getting in the middle of this. All I can speak for is myself and my priority has been and will always be winning. I don't care if the sun is out, the beer is cold or the number of pretty women in the stands. All I care about is the final score at the end of the game. The other stuff is nice to be around and see but it's a secondary concern to me. I can appreciate those who feel 'it's all good' regardless of what type of season the Sox have (i.e. baseball for baseball's sake) but that's just not me. Mark

Another national telecast and another desultory effort by the White Sox. Seems to happen every time. Mark

Sitting back tonight and trying to digest all the events of today since I was first told Billy had passed. A couple things I didn't put in his OBIT story come to mind. Every time I'd call him just to talk or to ask a question about the Sox or when he played he'd always answer "Hey there kidoh!" And he always sounded so happy. Like he never had a bad day in his life. One time I told him, "Billy you're never going to die..." He looked at me and said 'why?' and I told him "because you never pissed anybody off. God won't take someone who was such a nice guy." He laughed. I guess God needed a damn good left hander. Hope Billy says hello to Nellie, Sherm, Big Klu, Early, Gerry and Bob Shaw from all of us fans. Mark

7/31 White Sox vs Yankees 7:10 PM CT
Lip Man 1 replied to Jose Abreu's topic in 2015 Season in Review
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 10:14 PM) Thing is, he's still making a comeback from injury. You guys disagree, but the eye test tells me his stuff is improving. Now, the consistency is still off. Maybe he should have pitched in the minors all year. I agree five out of 10 is not great, but it's OK for a No. 5. The Danks hatred bothers me. Because 1.) he isn't to blame for his contract. Somebody offered it to him. 2.) The GM could demand he pitch a year in the minors to get his effectiveness all the way back following serious surgery. He's a No. 5 starter and doing OK in that role. Rodon has been equally inconsistent and he's No. 4. I think the reasons people hate on Danks are wrong. It is a few years removed from the surgery though and Danks is now in his 30's I think. The sooner he is out of the rotation and off the team the better it will be for all concerned. He's been well paid, it's not like he or his family is going to want for anything. Mark -

They say bad news comes in three's. It did today. Billy passes, no moves at the deadline, corpse-ball effort against the Yankees. Back to reality. The Sox sure know how to fall apart just at the time the fan base is getting excited and back into it. Amazing. Can't win when PK retires, can't win opening day, look totally lifeless for the home opener. Stink the joint out on reunion weekend and now tonight. Typical I guess. Mark -
Link to a story I wrote back in 2006 when I visited Chicago and spent time with Bill at his home. Pictures of some of his memorabilia are in the story. Just an amazing man. http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/in...y=2&id=3131 Mark

Disappointing. Would be very interested to hear the conversations between Kenny (Mr. football attitude - go for it right now!) and Rick (patience to rebuild the organization.) Agree though that being mediocre is the worst possible place to be in. Another thing to consider in their heart of hearts the Sox front office may not have been sold on the chances for this team the final two months and didn't want to do anything stupid. If that's the case I agree with them. Also frankly nobody else may have wanted the players they were offering, other might have felt they simply weren't that good. Mark

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 31, 2015 -> 11:15 AM) Is that the one where Thomas hoists him on his back like a fireman? I love that highlight. Correct. Mark

I'm stunned right now. Billy was a good friend, we spent a lot of time talking about baseball and the old days. I've got to write an obit piece for the Chicago Baseball Museum, I'll post the link here when it is published. Just a bad day but Billy lived a long time, had a great life. I will miss my friend. I did many times. Was at the game where he pinch hit the three run home run in the 9th inning to beat the Yankees and then later that season was sitting in the center field bleachers near Harry Caray when he blasted a pitch into them. Caray went crazy...almost caught the ball in his net. That was on August 23, 1972 and yes when that day rolls around we'll have the audio highlight of it. Mark

Fans: Just wanted to remind everyone that new features have been added to the "This Date In Sox History" page at Chicago Now / Sox Net. July 31st was one of the most memorable days in franchise history. There are a number of notations listed for the day but I wanted to point out that there are four historic audio clips available to listen to from events in Sox history as well. Daniel Shapiro helped me get this done and I wanted to give him a big "shout out" for doing so. The four from July 31st are as follows: 1972 - The first of Dick Allen's two inside the park home runs in the same game at Minnesota. Sox would win 8-1. Announcer: Jack Drees. Courtesy: WFLD-TV / Chicago White Sox. 1977 - Chet Lemon's game tying home run in the last of the 10th inning against Kansas City. Announcers: Lorn Brown / Mary Shane. Courtesy: WMAQ Radio / Chicago White Sox. 1977 - Ralph Garr's game winning single a few batters later. Sox would win 5-4, led K.C. and Minnesota by 6 1/2 games. Announcers: Lorn Brown / Mary Shane. Courtesy: WMAQ Radio / Chicago White Sox. 1991 - Robin Ventura's walk off grand slam off Goose Gossage. Sox would win 10-8. Announcers: Ken "Hawk" Harrelson and Tom Paciorek. Courtesy: SportsChannel-Chicago / Chicago White Sox. I hope you'll enjoy these clips. We'll have more of them in the future. On days that we do (say August 4th...hint, hint) I'll post here to remind everyone. Also feel free to post your memories in this same thread! Where were you when the events happened? Were you watching or listening? What do you remember about that game / season? Feel free to share those thoughts here. Again I hope you enjoy these and thanks to Daniel. Here is the link to that page: http://www.chicagonow.com/soxnet/2015/07/t...-comes-to-town/ Mark
