  1. Let's see how they invent new and creative ways to blow the game late again tonight.
  2. You hit the nail on the head. He thinks he's the smartest guy in the room and his philosophy is the correct way to operate a club and to "win." History has shown it isn't.
  3. Incredibly, well maybe not, this was the 13th time the Sox took a lead into the 7th inning or later...and lost! It also is the 6th time just in the last 10 games!!!!!!!!!!! You can't make this stuff up can you? Now halfway to 100 losses in the books. It is also the third time Kopech has been directly responsible for losing a late lead.
  4. That's a lot of money relatively speaking given he never played an inning and as you said it could have gone to use elsewhere.
  5. By the way the notice from the Sox said he'd be ready for next spring training. ?
  6. First time for everything. And it has to be better than the current owner.
  7. More wasted money. How JR keeps allowing his GM's to keep doing this for a decade now is beyond me given how "fiscally responsible" he is when it comes to pitchers and superstars.
  8. You make valid points which is why the Sox new new ownership that will embrace different aspects (including spending a great deal of money in all areas) to turn this franchise around. "Bad luck" and "targeted decisions against you" can still be overcome by smart people, hiring top talent for the front office and minor league system and spending money on the best free agents, not class C guys.
  9. Like I wrote, I've thought in general terms that JR's ego is such that he would try to lash out at the fan base. I don't think this is the case but ticket sales as you know isn't as important as it was in the 50's and 60's, not with all the domestic and international revenue streams today. And given his stadium lease agreement and the fact that he is still making money you can understand why I'd think it wasn't beyond a slim possibility he basically was telling the fan base to shove it. I'm reminded of an example from a political/historical sense. Word got out to national newspaper columnist Jack Anderson that LBJ had finally decided to get a replacement for FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Anderson went with the story which made national news. LBJ wasn't pleased and held a press conference saying that he was naming Hoover director for life. Afterwards he got one of his aides to get the word out that this was an "FU to Anderson." Anderson friends and associates then started good naturedly ribbing him that, 'he the guy who got Hoover appointed for life.'
  10. I've thought the same thing myself.
  11. Hard to argue with any of the player comments. The results speak for themselves since the start of the 2007 season.
  12. JR has publicly said in the past that managers and/or head coaches don't make that much of a difference. That's why the Sox will never get someone like a Dusty Baker, Lou Piniella, Joe Maddon or Craig Counsell. Like my dad always said, "You get what you pay for."
  13. He’s 7-for-99 over 35 games with one double, one home run, and a .235 OPS. Maldonado is 1-for-46 with one RBI in his last 15 games, with his last hit coming on May 11 against Cleveland, and is hitless in his last 35 at-bats.
  14. “Maldonado does a really good job behind the plate,” Grifol said. “Still in the sixth inning, I didn’t feel I needed to pinch hit right there. He’s really valuable behind the plate, but I understand. He’s not swinging it. It’s a hot topic every time he catches it. It’s going to continue to be a hot topic, and I’m going to continue to make decisions that I feel is best for the team, not just offensively.”?
  15. Fair point but Frank also lasted 16 years with the team clause or not.
  16. Ron went through a lot but some of it was of his own making. I'm trying not to speak ill of someone who can't defend himself but I was told Ron was told that he had to stop drinking, that it made his diabetic situation worse. He didn't. Then of course, his pandering and crying about not being admitted to the Hall of Fame, which pissed off some of the voters. I sat next to "Moose" Skowron a few years ago at a game near the radio/TV area, I think Chris Rongey was there too. I don't remember how it came up but Moose absolutely went off on Santo, calling him every name in the book, saying he didn't deserve to be in the Hall. It actually was pretty funny and I had to force myself not to laugh out loud (well, to much anyway!)
  17. https://chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/2024/06/09/dont-fire-pedro-grifol-make-him-see-this-chicago-white-sox-debacle-through-to-its-miserable-end-jerry-reinsdorf Funny column making some good points.
  18. This will be the 12th time this season the Sox took a lead into the 7th inning or later...and lost It will also be the 5th time this has happened in the last nine games! ?
  19. Keith Foulke did pretty well as a two-pitch pitcher with a big time change up
  20. It would be interesting to see the reaction if the Sox cancelled it after announcing it was returning.
  21. About the only memorable thing Santo did in his one year with the team. Guy said he couldn't stand playing for Chuck Tanner, who was absolutely a players manager and feuded with teammates including Dick Allen. From my interview with Carlos May: “The other time was when we got Ron Santo. He was our DH that year. (Author’s Note: 1974) We were in Chicago and it was cold and wet. Dick was hitting third, Bill (Melton) fourth and Santo fifth. Ron was back in the clubhouse, I don’t know if he was getting loose or doing something but Dick made an out and went back to the dugout.” “As Dick was sitting down, Ron came out of the tunnel and asked him what the pitcher was throwing. Dick exploded and basically said if he wanted to know what the pitcher was throwing he should have his ass on the bench watching with the rest of us. Dick was very big when it came to the team and that everyone should be doing everything they can to win games.”
  22. While I agree about the arrogance it comes with good reason...Boston teams win...a lot. Would be nice if Chicago teams could follow that example set over 25 years or so.
